St.Kilda v Fremantle

Another footy season is upon us. For us St Kilda fans, it is always a time of irrational hope and excitement, alongside the sense of impending doom.

We go into this season with so many unknowns. A new coaching team and their freshly designed gameplan. Young players, players in new positions. I feel that we could finish from top four to bottom four, although realistically we most likely end up somewhere between those. It really feels like we’re stepping into the unknown this year. And as a St Kilda supporting sadist (aren’t we all), I can’t wait.

Let’s have a look at possible best 22s:

I posted this one in the Best 22 thread after the Essendon game and will stick with it:

B: Webster Howard Battle
HB: NWM Wilkie Sinclair
C: Hill Windhager Wood
HF: Higgins Owens Byrnes
F: Gresham Caminiti/Membrey Butler
R: Marshall Steele Crouch
Int: Stocker Clark Phillipou Cordy
Paton (sub)
Bytel in for Windy if he doesn’t get up.

And I stole this one of the Freo best 22 thread:

B: Ryan Pearce Walker
HB: Clarke Cox Young
C: O’Driscall O’Meara Aish
HF: Fyfe Treacy Freddy (not sure who that is)
F: Switkowski Taberner Shultz
R: Darcy Brayshaw Serong
Int Jackson, Chapman, Walters, Brodie.

It has been a shocker of an off-season on the injury front. King will spend the first part of the season on the sidelines. Hayes will miss a decent chunk of footy. Zak Jones is battling another injury, DMac’s ongoing calf issues continue, Billings had another unlucky leg break, and there are question marks over Ross, Windhager and Membrey going into round one.

Not the ideal start to Ross Lyon’s tenure, but the tall-forward shortage will provide an opportunity for a youngster to claim a spot, and hopefully in the long run help us find a decent partner for King. There still appears to be depth on most lines, with Sharman and Caminiti fighting for a spot in the forward line, the likes of Paton and Bytel in the mix for a midfield spot, and defenders such as Highmore and Coffield seemingly starting the season on the outer to start the year.

Preview

Fremantle are coming off a successful season, making finals and having a great comeback victory in their elimination final against the Dogs. Their fans will no doubt be expecting to improve on that finish and be pushing up for the top four. They’ve lost Lobb and Mundy, two players that always seemed to kill us, but they have replaced those players with Jackson and O’Meara and will also have Fyfe in the forward line.

There has been some chat lately that we will look at this as a re-building year. I hope this is not the case and I doubt it is. Lyon has spoken openly about getting as good as we can as quickly as we can and I believe this will be the aim early in the year. This is a side that won 11 games last year, and the aim should be to improve on last year’s win total.

Players to Watch

zyH40Tx.png

Matteas Phillipou
Our first round pick looks like a really exciting prospect. He can kick the ball a mile, has great hands and will hopefully add some X-factor to our forward line early in the year.

Hunter Clark
Hunter has been training in the midfield throughout the pre-season, and judging by the practice games that is where he will start the year in the team. He was poor against the Dees and looked well off the pace, but against the Bombers he showed some great signs, regularly finding the ball and seeming to play his more natural game. If he can make it as a midfielder under the tutelage of Lenny Hayes it will really change the dynamic of our team.

Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera
Nasiah has been shifted to half back and looks like he could be very dangerous there. He has been getting a lot of it in the practice games, if he can do that in the regular season his ball use and toughness will be a weapon for us.

Mitch Owens
There’s just something about him. He is so hard at the ball, but he also possesses a knack for goals that makes me think it’s more than just luck. There’s a classiness to him. Will cut his teeth in the forward line early in the year and may just be our toughest match-up.

Key Match-Ups

wutu6hc.png

Marshall v Darcy/Jackson
There is talk around that we will be a lot weaker with the retirement of Paddy Ryder. I tend to think we will be stronger as it will see Rohan Marshall move to the full-time ruck position, where he can really dominate games.

Marshall had a tough time against the duel combo of Gawn and Grundy (to be fair plenty of ruckmen will this year), but found his feet against the Bombers by dominating that game. He will have a tough match-up against the combo of Sean Darcy and Luke Jackson, who are both very good ruckmen in their own right. But if he can get on top it will be crucial to us winning this game. When big Ro gets going, he is so dominant and can thrust the team forward from most areas of the ground. I would love to see him get off to a hot start here.

Windhager/Bytel v Brayshaw
Andrew Brayshaw has established himself as one of the gun mids of the competition. Last time out against us he really turned it on in the second half and was a huge part of why they ran over the top of us. I have no doubt he’ll cop a tag here, either by Windhager if he’s fit or Bytel if he comes in. We need to curb the influence of their better mids if we are to win the game, stopping Brayshaw would go a long way to ensuring that.

Aish v Wood
Aish is a dangerous player for the Dockers. He just goes about his business and racks up possessions. Mason has been burning up the track this off-season and looks set for a massive year. If he and Brad Hill can get on top on the wings it will help us to become the running side we want to be this year. Here’s hoping he can take his form against the Dons into this game and run Aish ragged.

Wilkie v Fyfe
Fyfe’s move to the forward line will be an interesting one. You would think that Wilkie would be the perfect match-up for him; hopefully Cal can lead our backline to a really stingy day at the office.

Tip

Round One is always so hard to get a read on. The Dockers could really be anything this season, but I tend to think a matchup at home against an interstate opponent is a great opportunity to start the second coming of RTB with a win.

Wins early in the season will be gold-dust for this team, and a great opportunity to build momentum. I liked what I saw against the Bombers, and whilst we will be going in with a somewhat makeshift forward line, I think we have enough quality in the backline and midfield to hold the Dockers to a low score and get the season off to a good start.

Good write up. Ruck battle will be an interesting one. Can see them having the upper hand at centre bounces but Marshall doing well from boundary throw ins.

Think Freddy is Michael Frederick if that helps

I looked at the stats from round 17 last year. We actually won the centre clearance by a fair bit and it looked like the game that Ryder got injured in. Crouch, Steele and Ross had a day out though.

From memory we destroyed them out of the middle in the first half but then wasted multiple opportunities. They came back in the second with Fyfe on ball and Brayshaw took over.

It was also the game where they gave 50 against Butler for cracking it after the ump missed a clear as day holding the ball.

I'd rather Owens, caminettis or Cordys output as options. They are far more game and mobile when not in the ruck. Campbell is a good back up, but he is a plain ruckman, not a forward/ruck. You're robbing Peter to pay Paul. Just concede the hit outs for 5 mins but have a superior ground level fleet to nulillifh the advantage some what. Same as what Battle did to GwS last year

On SM-G960F using BigFooty.com mobile app
Cordy is not a threat forward at all though

Both Cordy and Campbell have played a bit forward over the years and have had similar output

Cordy offers more pressure though which is presume is the reason Ross has him forward at the moment

Yeah what happens at the centre bounces will be interesting and of course go a long way in deciding the result. Intriguing to see what we do as far as a chop out for Roma in the ruck. I don't mind the idea of Owens in that role while the talls are out but not sure I wanna see it against Freo. Darcy will monster whoever we use I suppose, even at boundary throw-ins, so that might still happen, though to me it seems like they're gonna use the Cordarooni unfortunately. Still don't think he offers enough around the ground, though he's tall and we're certainly lacking height everywhere so he probably gets the gig.

Sharman is another curious one. It really does seem like he's just not rated by the new regime. With the forward line decimated for talls and him to sit and watch the entire Essendon game from the bench, well I still can't quite figure that out. Why wouldn't you at least play him for 15 minutes at the end to have a look? It was a practice match, you'd have thought they'd try a few different things. And then, if the decision was to not give him minutes, why wouldn't they play him in the Sandy match?

With Freo looking to be close to full strength, the realist in me says our injury list is just a bit too long, and with Membrey now looking unlikely, whatever forward line we put up is gonna look a bit comical. Away from home or not, it's really a game Freo should be winning.

Freo's whole forward line seems to be a cobbled together set up like ours will be. Lobb was their top goal kicker last year I think. Tabener is their best tall forward but he's hardly ever fit.

I feel with so many first 22 players out due to injury will take its toll. I think we will be competitive, but Freo's defensive set ups will be too strong.

Freo by 25 points.

A lot is going to depend on our defensive structure holding together. They score a lot of goals through small forwards and mids. We need to win the midfield, defend the field and convert our chances but I'm not convinced that they should be favourites.

I don't think that they are miles in front of us to be honest. If we can perform evenly instead of our flaky mixed bag stuff, we are a good chance here. It's always hard to go interstate and win. They are a pretty young side too. Fyfe should be more manageable with our current set up.

When we lost in round 17 last year we were missing Howard and had a makeshift defence with Joyce on Lobb, Highmore playing and Windy having only 7 touches. Looks like Ryder went down too, only had 5 disposals. Looks like we won the midfield but couldn't score from more inside 50s and our defence leaked like a sieve.
From memory, we have them about 4 first half goals purely from the horrendous kicking of Joyce and Highmore.

The interesting thing when you look at Freo is they've lost quite a few key players. Mundy, Lobb, but also Acres and Logue.

If they are without some of the sore guys they are going to be putting out a very different side to their finals team last year. They also may take a while to click.

They'll be an interesting watch this year as will we. It's a very intriguing matchup.

Yeah, they have plenty of question marks IMO. They look like one who could step back to move forward. Collingwood aren't a convincing finalist yet either.

Darcy will monster everyone including Marshall. Our mids and defence need to be on their A game.

Caminiti is the shiny new toy ATM, once that wears off (though ideally it doesn’t) I expect Sharman to get a crack at some stage and hold on to that spot.

To be honest, no Saint has really stood out for me in the preseason, Wood, Marshall and NWM being the exceptions. Caminiti and Phillipou show a lot of promise, but are a way off senior level IMO and will only get games through injuries to more senior players. I want us to win everything, but I think the Freo midfield and backline will give them an easy win, sad to say.

Most of us realise where we’re at.

No harm in losing to a Freo side on the up. If we came up against the expected bottom four and lost I’d be ECO’d for sure.

I don’t expect philippou to be daicos/Walsh/Rowell levels of ready made impact but I do expect him to kick a highlight reel goal every couple weeks or do something exciting but only get 10-12 touches a week. Not the complete package but be a great injection of hope into the supporter base

I reckon if he plays round 1, we'll see him pick up a Rising Star nom at some stage in 2023 - just seems like he is the sort of player who is likely to learn from each experience and push himself up a level.

Just noticed good ole Kano in his predictions has us finishing bottom four.
Everyone needs to chill on Kane Cornes. He knows as much about St Kilda as Jordan DeGoey knows about etiquette. But he knows footy and if I was him seeing only what he's seen, I'd probably think the same. Essentially, he's a clickbait machine who gets stronger the more you think about him. His opinion is as irrelevant as anyone else's.

I personally think its going to be hard to dislodge Hawthorn, Essendon, North, GWS and West Coast from those bottom 5 spots for most of the season, so the question is whether we will win more games than the likes of Gold Coast, Adelaide and Port - and I am stupidly optimistic enough to believe we will. But my opinion, like that of Kane Cornes, is irrelevant.

If we finish bottom 4, it means we went for a "kids first" policy designed to speed up development and win us higher draft picks. I'm not a fan, but loads of ppl are and tanking doesn't seem to have as much shame attached as once it did, so I'd get it.

Big call I know but I'm very confident that Stocker, Cordy, Phillipou, Adams, Heath, Van Es, McLennan, Peris and Caminiti will all get named for this weeks game.

Will be a League record for the most debutant's named in a single game (excluding the first games for each club)

Well the game is on a Sunday so it will be a squad of 30 named on the Thursday night - and everyone else is injured!!!!

Wouldn't be concerned with any predictions the so called experts make. They have as much chance of being right/wrong as the rest of us.

If I remember correctly, only 1 of about 30+ media people predicted Melbourne would finish in the 8 let alone win the premiership.
