It was more the lack of key forwards. We had Fergus and Kosi, with Kosi having a mare and subbed off. Also the 2 man ruck combo was ineffective. This time round we should have Lewis, Chol and Gunston which will make a huge difference.
It will certainly be interesting to see how different the outcome is. We may still have a long journey in front of us to be consistently competitive but, baring a heap of injuries prior to the opening bounce, we should have much better connection through the midfield and a wider spread of more dangerous option in the forward line than we did last year.

It would be disappointing to come away with a similar result.

Don't know if I could handle another flogging from these campaigners.

Looking back it really was a bit optimistic of the coaching staff to have expected a forward combo of Kosi and Fergus to be an AFL standard KPF combo.

I know we weren’t given any favours with Lewis missing the first part of the season but so many weeks I saw backlines almost ignore our forward line and just run riot with setting up goals running off half back.

But with Chol, Gunners, Ginni, Watson in the mix opposition backlines will have to at the very least pay respect to their immediate opponent as these guys are all capable of kicking a bag.

We didn’t really have much of a choice last year.

What would you have them do differently?

Maginness will tag Merrett. He’s the one that can get off the chain for Essendon. Draper is good but he’s overrated. I think we’ll win this game.

The number of times in recent games the bombers do hand pass chains that end with him. Just sit on him and at least make them uncomfortable.
It so obvious even to a ball watcher like me

I was watching some Line in the Sand content over the weekend with the same thought. I reckon the Bombers are going to come at us dirty and hard. They desperately need this game to prevent the bottom four malaise from setting in at Windy Hill. We're young and have had a lot of turnover this off-season. We're a good target for cheap play. I'm predicting a little Irish Whiskey this game.

They haven’t quite got to the level of niggle the Roos had under Bwad yet.

Huff and puff usually blows over after 5 mins in a game. If we're the better team, we should be able to outplay them over 4 quarters, regardless of the bravado. Time will tell.

Gone a forward recruiting spree a year earlier essentially.

At the end of the day I guess it hasn't mattered to a developing side but we would definitely won a few more games last year if we had of had even a mediocre forward line.

Saw this today …. thought it was a pretty good effort. Liking our versatility and reckon Mitch has got a lot to play with on the magnet board.

Predicted rd 1 teams - Ben Cotton and Ben Waterworth from Fox Sports

B:
Jarman Impey, James Blanck, Blake Hardwick

HB: James Sicily, Josh Weddle, Karl Amon

C: Changkuoth Jiath, Conor Nash, Josh Ward

HF: Dylan Moore, Mabior Chol, Jack Gunston

F: Luke Breust, Mitch Lewis, Jack Ginnivan

FOLL: Ned Reeves, Jai Newcombe, James Worpel

I/C: Cam Mackenzie, Jack Scrimshaw, Finn Maginness, Connor McDonald, Nick Watson (sub)

One of the best I/C benches we have had in a long time!

Except for Hardwick?

Yeah read a poster this morning that spoke to Dimma about playing forward and who would take his spot down back and he mentioned Finn. I think we will see a lot of moves by Sammy depending on matchups to minimise damage or gain an advantage during games …… looking forward to seeing Dimma playing forward at times as he has been training there a lot 👍

Would we consider moving Hardwick forward, Finn to HBF and Gunston to sub?

Fair effort. But who makes way when it becomes apparent that Hustwaite is too good to be running around at BH?

He may just be unlucky and have to wait for someone to have a stinker or two.

Otherwise the starting mids (Nash, Day, Newcombe and Worpel) are going to have to spend more time rotating through other positions.
