I love this depth.... Looks like we should be picking a team to beat Carlton and not just our best team.

IMO our players that will definitely play are
B: Morris, Rance, Griffiths
HB: Houli, Chaplin,
C: Grigg, Cotchin, Newman
HF: Edwards, Martin
F: Riewoldt
R: Maric, Deledio, Tuck

Int: Ellis,

Last HB spot - between Petterd and Batchelor. I'm thinking Petterd.
Forward Line - Mcguane, Vickery, Stephenson, Nahas, King or White.

Rotation Midfielders - Vlastuin, Conca, Jackson, Arnott

No other players are really in the frame (unless Knights is being kept secret).

6 spots for 12 players I think that is great depth considering Helbig, Astbury, O'hanlon and Dea could step up, add in Foley, Grimes & Knights.

As for who plays round 1.
To shut down Eddie Betts and Jeff Garlett I think we will use Houli, Morris, Rance and maybe Ellis/Newman at various stages of the game.
I think Petterd will be selected as Batchelor has been out of form and I think Petterd will match up on Walker.

As for the forwards we need to put pressure on their defensive rebound. We are partially lucky that Scotland isn't playing but they don't have as many injuries down back as they have in the past. I think we need a fast player (King or White) to shut down Yarran or both with one as the SUB. The last time King played round 1 we won and I think he can be a barometer to the teams performance just like when we beat Essendon in 2011.

If White or King play does that mean Nahas doesn't? Well I think we still need Nahas because of his crumbing ability and his run. Out of form or not I think we need him but wouldn't be surprised if he gets overlooked.

As for the tall forwards I think McGuane has to play round 1. When they have Duigan, Laidler, Jamieson and Henderson who will probably all play round 1, we can't just rely on 2 talls especially if Vickery plays out of form.

In terms of back-up ruckman/forward I'd be tempted to play Stephenson over Vickery due to form and the fact Carlton will play at least 2 strong ruckman. Vickery has not looked strong in the ruck and as Maric can play up forward also I'd be tempted to see if Maric/Stephenson play with the ruck split 65/35. Not sure if it will happen. There is also the option that we play Vickery/Stephenson over McGuane another possibility to put Carlton under pressure up forward. Will be a very interesting selection.

Down to the extra couple of midfielders and I think we may only get two.

I expect Conca to play and would almost guarantee he will. I also reckon Jackson will be selected hard to see him not even though he isn't in our best 22. However I want Vlastuin to play and I want Arnott to play because they offer something different. Probably the toughest selection of them all and honestly have no idea who they will pick.

Anyways after long consideration here is my round 1 team to 'Beat Carlton'.

B: Morris, Rance, Griffiths
HB: Houli, Chaplin, Petterd
C: Grigg, Cotchin, Newman
HF: Edwards, Vickery, Martin
F: King, Riewoldt, Stephenson
R: Maric, Deledio, Tuck
Int: Ellis, Conca, Jackson
Sub: Vlastuin

There really are only 2 question marks there IMO.

McGuane could play in place of Vickery or Stephenson. I would love to see him play but for some reason think 2 ruckman + Vickery will put Carlton under more pressure defensively.
Nahas or White could play in place of King.

I would like Arnott as well in place of Jackson but I don't think that will happen.

What are your thoughts?

My ideal team would be this for Rd. 1, though I wouldn't be surprised to see Griffiths or Astbury in as a 3rd tall. Ditto Jackson seems to cling on despite everything, though I'm not sure whose spot he'd take. I wouldn't be surprised if Vlastuin comes in as the sub either as a way of easing him into the game, though I'd much rather see him play a full game than somebody like White.

B: Morris Chaplin Petterd
HB: Houli Rance Ellis
C: Deledio Martin Grigg
HF: Edwards Vickery Newman
F: Nahas Riewoldt McGuane

Foll: Maric Tuck Cotchin

Bench: Conca King Vlastuin Sub:White

Our forward crumbing was ordinary last year and ppl wanna take out Robbie who is our best at it by far... I just don't get it!

Shane Edwards is a better crumbed than Nahas.

Shane Edwards crumbed? Sounds delicious!

At least that's what Bruce would say.....

Nahas would probably go well battered.

Completely off topic! If we beat Brisbane by 50 and Brisbane beat Carlton by 30 then we should beat Carlton by 80! :)

Not battered but I'm glad you saw where I was going with that! ;)

Realistically that means
-White plays in place of King
-McGuane plays instead of Stephenson
-Nahas takes Vlastuin's spot

I mean who else could possibly not play?

I think Vlastuin will be ahead of Jackson.

Playing Big O is pretty random I really don't think he should be in the frame and I don't know why people are suggesting it. He hasn't given any indications that he is a good forward and that is where he would be spending most of his time. McGuane has shown some decent form and was pretty solid in the second half of last year.

Plus playing Big O might disrupt Maric's rhythm or something. Apart from Cox + NicNat there are very few cases where ruckmen play better when there is another full time ruck in the side. I really can't see Maric and Big O in the same team at any stage this year. The only chance really is if Vickery is not playing. But even then I'd be hesitant.

Hello All

- Knights also gets a game over white. The whole reason we recruited Knights was for his finishing skills which are miles ahead of White.

Providing Knights can actually get to the ball first!
White has pace to burn and wil rack up heaps more possessions than Knights.
At the of the day, White may turn the ball over occassionally, but can also show patches brilliance, whereas Knights has better finishing skills but has slowed down considerably since his career at the Crows.

When has White ever racked up a heap of possessions? He's only had 20+ touches 5 times over his whole career.

Speed =/= ball winning ability.

White would probably still be ahead of Knights for R1 selection though due to the difference in game time each has had over the pre season.

Deledio, Martin, Cotchin, Riewoldt... can show patches of brilliance.

White... doesn't butcher the bull every now and then.

Good team on form, but, can't see us leaving such a big load with Maric this year if we can help it. Vickery or Stephenson might need to be considered To give Maric a rest. Also, Carlton have multiple big man options... Vickery is a better option in the ruck, even in ordinary form up forward. Will be an interesting call.

Two ruck men in a side is probably...most likely outdated for todays fast interchanges...it works for WCE cos Nic Nak is so mobile for a big man...
But against Carltoon with their array of tall players its a consideration...a tactic...nothing more...
Its all about TV for us...arguably the most important player for us after Maric in team structure...
TV fires up...we have a killer diller CHF and relief ruck...
TV forwhatever reason...form...confidence...fitness...injury niggles ie shoulder issues...doesnt fire up...we are in big trouble...
TV gets clobbered in the shoulders during the game...again we are in trouble...
We play Maric at CHF for this game...and the Big O is the ruck man...it will either straighten us against Carltoon or congest the forward line...
I guess the question i am asking...which i dont know the answer to...
Is TV ready to rumble...his NAB form has me a tad uneasy...if he is'nt quiet ready are we still gonna roll the dice with TV..
