Going of projected scores I'm looking at 1938 with Ellis having a 0 projected score. If he can bust out a 60-70 point game and get me to 2k I'll happily start with that. After all its not about what you start with but how you finish that counts in this game. Something that I have learnt painfully over the last couple of years.

My advice would be to stick fat with the squad you've chosen heading into this week and forget about chasing an extra 20-30 points by playing funny buggers. All you're going to end up doing is wasting trades as you trade that fast starting rookie out again in a couple of weeks, most likely for the bloke you traded out in the first place.

Each to their own. Personally, I'd be more than happy to start Couch (or Zorko) in the forwards this week, especially if Couch is elevated and named as an emergency, so I can get Kennedy's score, as I think Couch & Zorko will play a lot of games and score well this year even if neither make their teams final 22 for Rd 1.

I did the same thing in 2010, I had Pods and Rockliff on my bench for Rd 1 even though they didn't make their debuts until Rd 2. Worked out great for me. Dumbarses replaced one or the other with Relton Roberts before lockout, just because he was named for Rd 1, then wasted early trades getting Rocky & Pods in.

My point is, the best rookies might not necessarily play in Rd 1, but by starting with them you save a trade or two especially if you're confident that they will play in the first few rounds. As cash cows, Rockliff & Pods matured faster than all of the rookies who played in Rd 1 (bar Barlow) of 2010 as well as becoming keepers for those of us who hung on to them.

It's certainly not out of the question that Couch gets elevated this week and plays round one. I was at Casey Fields last night watching our affiliate and Couch was just about best on ground in their two point win over Williamstown. He had a heap of it and was at the bottom of every pack. Was very impressive.

Cheers for the info, either way it's a winner then.

Seems like many have gone Goodes and McDonald.

I didn't want either because of age.

I think the forwards are much better this year and you don't need Goodes.

McDonald might be a good cash cow but will be interesting to see how much of the ball they're willing to let him hog once matches are already finished on the scoreboard.

Mumford I considered but think he is heavy and can hurt his knees. Might just be a bit paranoid but copping doughnuts in the ruck is one of the worst things to go through in this game.

There is no VC loophole this year though.

Of course there is still a loophole.

What happens with the VC on a partial lockout player and captain on someone who doesn't play? They become captain and score double points.
Now im just going to switch the captaincy from Magner to Ablett and move Magner to the bench.

Of course if Magner ends up playing in the end it wouldn't have mattered at all.

You sound like a man trying to find little nit picking reasons why you shoudnt pick them.

Mumford has lost alot of weight and it was well advertised, the main reason i picked him was the sydney soft starting draw. FWIW i think Sydney are shit, maybe R.Shaw and ROK can improve them a bit but i have tipped them to finish 12th-13th.

I cant understand why people wouldnt pick JMAC. Old yes, but he only has to play 6 games before the byes for him to make more than enough cash (maybe 5 if he scores 100's every week). Hes also always been a very durable player, got through all the PS games fine and scored well, starting onballer with a very young side they are going to need experience and leadership. They didnt pick a player to purely just coach and not play. There paying him money for a reason and thats to get the pill 20 times a game and provide the grunt work for the young kids.

I agree with Goodes though, i think he was in my team once throughout the entire PS and thats because of the soft draw, than researched if it mattered who Goodes played (top vs bottom 8) = no difference. So he was immediately removed.

Gonna agree with Keystone regarding JMAC. He has shown his durability in the past and he has shown good skills in leadership as well. He should be playing games week in week out. GWS will want their best side on the field every match day and he is in that best side with his leadership qualities, tackling and ball winning ability

I'm a bit disappointed with myself!

Went "unique" and started Wilson (GWS) over Kennedy. Worked out an absolute treat! Have Hombsch on my bench who went OK, and looked to play the role I recruited him for (3rd tall, taking a lot of marks etc). Giles and Wilson haven't got me off to the best start, but I'm glad I didn't bring Goodes in at the last minute at this point!

Giles 77
Wilson 36

2/113

I'm a tiny bit tempted to trade Coniglio if he delivers another Low 50s score in round 2.

Especially if there is another mid rookie delivering 75+ at $40K cheaper (e.g. Greene).

Would this be a waste of a trade?

Also, Chad Cornes was awesome last night. If he plays a lot this year and in defence, I think he could be a good option down back. The ball is going to be down that end constantly, and his intercept marking was a feature against the Swans.

Am I crazy to consider this?:eek:

Yes, it would be a waste of a trade. Coniglio will average 70-80. I didn't pick him because I saw value elsewhere for the dollars, but if I had I'd be holding tight.

Best to wait 3 weeks I'd say. I might be tempted to downgrade him to JMAC before the prices rise.

I do think the old fella could be a good pick and I'll be watching him closely in round 2. He's on track to be a top 5 cash cow early and I might not want to miss out.

You can't win them all with your rookie selections but you can jump on the boat before it sails (prices rise).

If Coniglio gets > 70 in Round 2 I will probably hold.

I had Clifton and traded him to Coniglio due to Clifton not getting named...

Will probably downgrade Coniglio back to Clifton if Clifton gets a round 2 birth and is on bubble for round 4. The rest of the midfield rookies I don't really like or already have.

Waste of a trade. Coniglio will average at least 70. Last year Swallow started slowly and seemed like a bit of a waste of money compared to other rookies but he made up for it by ending up making a lot of money. If you've got Coniglio, you should be planning to keep him till at least round 8ish.

*waits for people to trade Coniglio out for Clifton/Greene* only for Ohailpin, Brogan, Power, Adams, Buntine, Scully, Treloar to take their spot in the team.
This!
People are so jumpy, he had one average game, he also copped a decent whack off the ball in his first afl game. He's a gun so he will produce decent numbers eventually and his job security is the best of any of the rookies out there.
The other thing that amazes me is how many people are planning on selecting a non-playing rookie just to get bugg or kennedys score on the field. If the rookie doesnt end up playing until round 9 or 10 then youve cost yourself either a trade or a lot of potential cash earnt by a playing rookie, all for the sake of 30 or 40 points!

Swallow scored 58 in round 1 last year. I think I'll almost certainly hold onto him, it would take something drastic for me to trade him.

People are so jumpy! Why would you trade out the number two draft pick after one round!?!

What's everyone going to do with McDonald if he gets 3-4 weeks? It's an awkward amount of weeks bwcause none of the cows would've fully matured to use him as a downgrade by then.
