In the team youve named above, it should obviously be Prestia. He failed when tried in the high half forward spot last season. Can't be playing him, Ross, Hopper and Taranto in the midfield either.
He did kick 3 in a quarter in 1 game didn't he? I just can't see a world where Prestia is dropped for Mansell. With Dusty back in, someone will have to role into the middle when Dusty gets forward. Prestia can do that. Ross can and should play wing.

That was at home to West Coast. Surely thats not enough to hold a forward spot the following year.

I still think Ross should play midfield minutes, we need to fix that area of the ground. Dusty alone wasnt enough with the others last season.

I would like Yze to make a few tough calls on senior players set a standard, because some we're awful. I just hope he doesn't go down the line of believing the hype of certain senior players like previous coaches because we need a injection of youth and rejuvenation.

I don’t know about others on here but I reckon the new coach needs to make a big statement with team selection this week. Our performance in the first half was like the bad parts of 2009, and the first half of 2010 all over again. We felt hopeless with no one to turn to, to help us win. Well IMO that’s absolute bullshit when you have so many senior and premiership players still running around on the ground. I’ll be disappointed if we don’t see at least 6 changes this week. Yze needs to take charge of team selection and set the expected standard early. No more DH & Co favourites being passengers each week.

Outs: Naismith, Ryan, Dow, Grimes, Pickett, Prestia, MRJ

Ins: Lynch, Dusty, Nank, Mansell, Brown, Mcauliffe, Cumberland

Midfield was shit. I’d drop Taranto if he didn’t have runs on the board and Hopper if he hadn’t kicked two goals. Prestia gets a rest/semi-dropped. Dow gets a hard you won’t play again if you dish up that shit so prove you can do better in the VFL.

MRJ a bit unlucky but the Hardwick era is over. Let’s try scoreboard pressure rather than chasing ass because we weren’t good enough to get the ball pressure. Even with that said Castagna, Butler, Higgins, Dan Rioli were all much greater goal threats than MRJ.

Pickett either needs to get a bit more composure or retire. He does good things and then does dumb things which cancel out the good work. Both at 32 Pickett and Grimes should only play if there isn’t a capable younger player available. Right now I’d rather see Brown making mistakes instead of Grimes, and Cumberland (or insert one of the other 10 small forwards) making mistakes instead of Pickett.

No reason not to debut a midfielder when our midfield was so poor and old mate McAuliffe has been really good in his preseason hitouts.

Sub will be a bit of a question - Ross should get a full game but preferably not just on the wing, Banks was just ok so maybe Banks sub or Mansell.

Team
B: Gibcus, Young, Broad
HB: Short, Vlastuin, Rioli
C: Mansell, Martin, McIntosh
HF: Cumberland, Balta, Bolton
F: Campbell, Lynch, Kozi
R: Nank, Taranto, McAuliffe
Int: Hopper, Brown, Ross, Baker
Sub: Banks

Having Balta, Kozi and Lynch in the team makes sense when we are playing teams like Carlton, GWS, WB, Brisbane because we can give first crack to Young and Gibcus but roll Balta back if needed

Like most of this but I’d keep Pickett in over McIntosh and MRJ has to at least be the sub

Any training clips of like Nank climbing the tackle bag like a man's possessed or Dusty and Lynch booting them thru goal post height from 55 out?
asking for a nervous bluebagger mate.

Just over 24 hours until the team is named. It will be interesting to see just which way Yze and co go. Lynch Nankervis & Martin definitely in, Mansell was penciled in for a spot before hurting his ankle against Melbourne in the first scratch match, so would have to be in serious contention to return.

The bigger issue is who makes way and there are plenty of candidates after Opening Round.

Of the older guys:
Grimes struggled yet again and doesn't quite have the same standing with Yze as he did with Hardwick
Prestia backing up on a 5 day break with his injury history should be managed based on last weeks decision to rest Martin
Broad was another older guy who didn't have his normal impact that we've come to expect.
KMac played a typical game for him, but does he offer more long term than a younger player.

Of the younger kids:
Dow didn't quite live up to the preseason hype, but had a lot of more experienced teammates struggle.
Banks was quiet on his wing with limited impact.
Ryan likely makes way for either Nankervis or Lynch
Koschitzke limited impact, but surely you give him a shot playing alongside Lynch as Yze would have been planning all summer.

Personally I'd like to see Dow Koschitzke & Banks retained as we need to pump game time into them for their development, but is doing so bringing selection integrity into question as surely you pick players on form, not potential.

On the flip side there are the experienced players who will be less likely to be phased by the big game atmosphere and should provide a more consistent performance across 4 quarters.

Like I said it will be interesting to see which way Yze and co go.

There’s no way you play Lynch, Balta and Kostichke in the same forwrd line.

Balta will play from the bench and relieve Nank. It’s how Yze wants to structure up but injuries forced him to play Ryan

I believe we can go into Ted lasso mode and be goldfish when preparing for our game v Carlton it's no coincidence that the Blues were also thrown under a bus by the AFL having to play in the tropics, short break and most travel and it showed as both teams seemed to be in self-preservation mode in the first half 20g oppo v 6g....second half when teams adjusted, pulled their fingers out and obviously got a spray from the coach it was reversed oppo 6g v 16.
