Richmond's midfield were harder and faster than ours, causing turnovers then and running forward in waves. Our defenders were on a hiding to nothing when that happened. Replacing a tall defender with a small defender would not have affected their midfield dominance. Improving our contested ball and adding to our midfield run would. I like Buckley and would love to be wrong but he doesn't seem to be that type of player.
Read more of my posts. I said seems because that's what I think it seems like. I'd much prefer a Williamson or Sheehan to come in down back and some more run through the midfield as well. I stated before it wouldn't have changed the result.

we were harassed off the ball, they swarmed in numbers - we were forever outnumbered - pretty sure we had 18 on the ground same as them

Murphy/Gibbs/Cripps/E.Curnow and despite a great game played Kreuzer could not contain a 4 quarter pressure act delivered by Richmonds midfield and a raging bull performance by Dustbin Martin. Someone had to step up and run with Martin he made Richmond look 6 goals better than they are.

Tuohy out just means more pressure on Docherty and Simpson's kicking ability - or lack thereof. Docherty at least has some size - but he reminds me of Buckley with ball in hand all full speed and not much brain behind it. I hope I'm wrong and this was just a bad game - but both Docherty and Simpson along with White - allowed Richmond to play a full press all game and get away with it. We were strangled by teh fact that we couldnt get the ball out of our half of the ground for very extended periods - and this is because too many in our backline are very ordinary and suspect kicks.

Despite all the bad stuff - one thing became pretty clear- with Weitering up front along with SOJ at least these two know where and when to run to - and the side actually kicked a decent enough score - despite no midfield help - good signs.

It's possible but if he was to stick around he could easily be part of a contending side in the 2020s

Yep. I see what your saying.

I think we may be able to do a "decent" deal for him now !!. We've had for nearly 10 years now and we know what we've got. He's also viewed at being at his "peak" in terms of age. If the crows do a decent deal for us..I think it would serve us better if he didn't stick around.
saying that..this probably belongs in another thread.

Indeed.

SOS will be sniffing around for his best trade currency again and that'll most likely come from a Gibbs trade or Kreuzer FA compo.

You said this
Richmond's small forwards killed us, we were too tall down back. Buckley seems to be the next in line for a small defender role.
That's all I'm responding to. I disagree with the idea that it was the small forwards that were the main factor - I think that their mids had far too much easy ball which in turn gave Richmond's entire forward line (bar Griffiths) an armchair ride.

He is still contracted ... Crows wont want to **** this up again if they go for him ... will be laughing stocks.

Yep..Which makes for a perfect landscape for SOS & co to do the deal. This time they'll need to get it done or be the laughing stock in their home state and across the football world. What took place last year was pathetic form from the Crows. Loved...how SOS took care of it...

Just for the sake of total clarity ...I dont dislike the way Gibbs plays the game. I just think we need to start thinking next generation...Build..Build Build...

The Crows will offer us less then last year for Gibbs and we'll probably take it, then everyone will laugh at us saying we should've trade him last year.

I don't get the Buckley love. We have been smashed at the stoppages the entire preseason and also this week yet people say we should bring in a...small back pocket specialist with questionable decision making skills? If his name was Dylan Thomas then we'd all - rightly - be calling for Kerridge or Cunningham or Palmer's inclusion instead... #unpopularopinion
I actually want him as a midfielder who supports the defence, maybe sending him deep if we really need speed to help corral some counter-attacking threats from the opposition.

I think his work around the stoppage, and taking the footy from wing to F50 is underrated. He blazes the odd kick trying to make 50 metre passes and 60 m shots at goal, but when he looks for the mid-range pass he regularly hits them. Also uses it very well by hand and doesn't seem to lose sight of the football in traffic.

If he was 6'3", you'd stick him in at the stoppage all day and not bat an eyelid. He should be supporting SPS & Murphy so that we've always got one of them managing defensive coverage.

How was Nankervis rated better than Kruezer?
3 contested marks, two goals, and I'm guessing a whole host of pressure acts and a decent amount of hitouts to advantage, because his stats are otherwise shitful.

On the relative simple CD stats sheet on the AFL site, you'd think Kreuzer played the better game by a country mile, and that's how I saw it with my eyes as well.

How about we leave Macreadie in and drop White instead?
Life is easier when you keep it simple. :)
We had 5 tall defenders (you can wax lyrical about height ranges, but Marchbank, White and Plowman don't play on quicker types), I was keener on dropping the number down to 3. That's pretty simple, as is my post in terms of language (if not length), which was covering about 25 pages of posts where people were talking about the same 5 points over the top of each other.

The problem with the volume in the match threads is that every 5 pages the discussion starts again. It's a by-product of success I suppose, but the nature of discourse has slowly sprawled out over time and now seems unwieldy to deal with. Is there somewhere I can go to make forum plugin suggestions to help?

Rowe is underrated. Everyone praises Kreuzer for his one percenters and then overlook all of Rowe's.
