hot, probably moist night.
Wonder if we just bring rosas straight in.

Add a bit more offense in the forward 50 than Berry.

Seems unlikely to be a high scoring game. Kicking 12 goals could well be enough.

I’m excited but also feeling incredibly wary.

Missing a few of these guys in powell, Ellis and lemmens due to pre season soft tissue injuries is really disappointing. Not sure how Humohrey’s injury was sustained but sounds preventable..

Particularly with a difficult start. Have everyone on deck and we could have pinched a win or two off top 4 candidates and really given us a massive confidence boost to start the year.

Instead we’re looking at playing a backline with Charlie constable, Darcy macpherson and Ben long as the small / medium defenders. If you told me that would be our 2023 rd 1 lineup 12 months ago I would have just about fainted and assumed we had mass exodus from the club.

I’m also a bit worried the league seems to be trending towards really fast ball movement. We know Dew can be one who really sticks to his plans and sticks to his guns. Does our game plan match up with that?

Confident farrar and long can do the job as the smaller defenders, still unsure if constable is up to it at half back. He will be keen to impress with Powell and Weller breathing down his neck. Really need to get on top in the middle and give our big guys upfront a chance. If it goes in quickly I think their defence will struggle.

I want to believe that something miraculous has happened in the last 5-6 months since the end of the 2022 season but all I see is a gaping hole where Rankine once stood
The return of King is great but as I've noted we are looking for an order of magnitude improvement in some players to take us to the next level
We know that's unlikely to happen
Any AFL team that is playing Charlie Constable and Darcy Mac isn't a serious finals contender IMO
if we make the 8 this year it will be an extraordinary effort
In the AFL arms race we are fielding developmental weapons against proven firepower that seems to be effortlessly upgraded year after year without any budgetary pressure
It's frightening weird and very shady all at the same time

Looking forward to another footy season, hoping like always that this one will be better than the last.
Will put my two cents worth in.
To go forward we will need lots of improvement from a large group of players.
Some will come from more experience and natural development
I outline 6 players who we need to improve for us to go forward.

1 Sam Collins -needs to find the form of 2 years where he was difficult to play on otherwise our defence is in big trouble.
2 Jack Lukosius -is a number 2 draft pick yet to show he warranted that pick. The time is now for Jack to produce.
3 Matt Rowell - love the guy.Needs to start getting those 25+ possession games.
4 Elijah Holland - Beautiful kick if he gets enough ball becomes a serious weapon.
5 Mabior Chol - Was good last year but feel like he can step up another level.Needs to get to a few more contests as a CHF.
6 Alex Davies - his one that could improve rapidly and give good depth to our midfield.
Throw in King Weller and Powell back from long term injuries and hope of improvements are there.

Negatives
Lack of quality tall defender is a major concern particularly against the top sides.
Lack of a quality quick small forward capable of kicking 25 +goals will hurt in the long term (Rosa ?)
Our mid field as good as they are probably need to get forward a bit more and hit the scoreboard.
21 goals from our main three is not enough over a full season. If Flanders,Davies, and Holland can step up a bit
dont mind Miller and Rowell spending some time forward.

All in all we have a very difficult first 7 weeks a 4 win 3 loss would be a great result.

Tough game first up but the family will all be there hoping for the best.
Go Suns

Yes, second most thoughts above re: the tall defenders, running defenders and requirement for guys like Luko, Chol, Rosas to step up.

The good thing, is that it starts in the middle - and that's where I'm most comfortable with our team right now.

Tier 1
Witts: AA calibre ruckman
Touk: One of the top 8 midfielders in the league.
Anderson: Young star, should only get better, expecting him to only become more damaging.
Rowell: Elite tackler, expecting him to take a big step back towards the early days. Still only played 30 odd games.
Swallow:A solid veteran who finished strong last year, don't lose much with him in there.

Tier 2
Flanders: Expect him to blossom
Davies: Adds size and speed, growing, expect him to be a valuable player end of year
Fiorini: Decent inside mid back up, won't play every match but will get his chance, and can be good in this specific role.

Tier 3
Hollands: May get a few chances to play on the ball, skilled and tough
Humphrey: Looks powerful, may get a chance to play on the ball at times.
J. Anderson: Solid veteran who will do his job if called upon.

With improved midfield depth I would expect some of the regulars including Touk and Rowell to rest forward for part of the game. Given their work rate, clean hands and pretty reliable kicking, I would expect them to kick a few more goals when stationed as forwards compared with last year.

Yeah I reckon our midfield matches just about anything going around at the moment
