Can't wait to see Payne. Is he more athletic than Andrews? Andrews isn't overly quick but has an amazing ability to read the play. I've heard mixed reports on Payne's speed. Who would he match up on? Lynch or Reiwoldt? or resting ruck of Chol or Soldo. Worried about Martin as always... has that explosiveness that Gardiner can't compete with - Payne to run with him for a bit at times? heard Payne is explosive.

If there were ever a first year player to live up to your name this is the one.

Payne is a very big unit but is also a very athletic one. He is an explosive athlete with much more pace than guys his size do especially off the mark. He is certainly more athletic than Andrews.

Who he matches up on I think will depend on what they want to do with Andrews. If they want to give Harris the opportunity to float around and impact contests then he probably goes to Lynch. If they are happy for Harris to do a job I would expect him to go to the resting ruck. Payne is a pretty good intercept mark in his own right at the level below so it is not out of the question that he could get a few intercept marks himself. In the NEAFL last year I thought he looked at least, if not more capable than Walker and we have seen how well Walker has done this year. Personally I think Payne has an AA level ceiling and so to say I am really looking forward to seeing how he goes is an understatement. If he comes on as I hope suddenly our backline just became a nightmare for a lot of teams. No pressure though :)

Gardiner is having a great year. I think he will be quietly confident taking Martin.
I hope Payne is switched on for this one. Looking forward to another Qlder playing!!
I don't think there is a defender in the competition who can consistently defend Dusty one out, we want Harris coming over the top of any contests between one of our players and Dusty + great pressure up the ground.

I don't rate Browny's contribution to On the Couch a lot of the time because he'll spend 5 minutes talking about how key forwards need to have presence and I won't learn anything, but one interesting thing he said last night was that Lynch had played a very selfless role last year and acted as a decoy to get Harris out of the action as much as possible. It would be a big big ask for a first gamer to spend time on Lynch but I wonder if we want Harris free to roam wherever and will try Payne on Lynch who was a bit out of form prior to last week.

I sort of agree with you , I've been really impressed by what I've seen of Payne ,apart from the attributes you bring up he seems to be very composed with ball in hand.

No pressure though ! It's a big step up for him tonight and we need to give him the time to adjust.

We need to be wary of the tactic that Richmond use against us where they work out who they believe to be our weakest defender and then channel their attacking moves inside 50 through their direct opponent. They did it to perfection in the first quarter of our Round 23 clash last year when Riewoldt gave Marcus Adams an absolute bath.

Aside from Jack's last goal of the first quarter (in that package) where Adams panicked, I'm not sure any defender was stopping him... That ball delivery is too good and, as Fagan said at the time, Riewoldt's goals were more a result of poor midfield pressure rather than poor play by Adams.

Ballenden will rotate with him in and out of the forward line and McStay/Skinner comes in when needed - mostly in the forward line.

So going forward Ballenden is the second string ruck for Big O..?
MCStay and Skinner more fowards.

Yeah, pretty much. Unless Archie Smith comes back into the line up.

Would be surprised if Skinner doesn't make way for McStay. Unless we get an injury to a tall this game and we need him as cover.

Depends if he can kick more goals/kick straighter than McStay I would think. Did the McStay things when he got into the game in the second half last week.

I'm taking the coach Fagan approach - to be the best you've to beat the best. In that context - this game and the next game are crucial for us.

Need to win them all to establish ourselves for finals race.
Yeah but we very young tonight, missing a couple of keys players and a four day break.

Delivery was perfect. It was more about lack of leg speed and playing too far off him. Watch Grimes when he plays Charlie Cameron and you will see where Adams was going wrong.

Can anybody pick who the kids are..... without cheating?

Is it Alex Witherden in the white guernsey with the red V?

Yep that's Alex, the one below is Rayner and the one with hat is Clugga.. easy !

McStay should not be an automatic selection next week. Skinner and Ballenden both matched his usual output up forward and both those players deserve a chance to show what they can do. The reality with McStay is we know exactly what we are going to get from him and he has had every opportunity to take his game to the next level but has not managed to do so.

Against pretty shit oppo last game.
Bigger test tonight.

Yep, I am interested in seeing how the 4 day break plays out tbh. I do worry about Mitch Robbo and BigO but if they're deemed fit by coaches, we just have to wait and see how it pans out.

All the newbies would be super keen to play their role against reigning premiers - no bigger challenge within AFL today.

You can't seriously be suggesting they matched McStays output up the ground. McStays work up the ground has been levels above theirs against Essendon.
