After the Lions annihilated Box Hill at Box Hill City Oval last weekend, the Hawks will be looking for redemption on the road against Essendon, who will also be smarting after being well beaten by Richmond last time out.
The Hawks kept it close for half of the first quarter, but the warning signs were already flashing as Brisbane eased out to an 11 point lead at quarter-time, which only built from there. The Hawks crumbled in the last quarter, kicking just 2.2.14 to Brisbane's 6.5.35 to allow the margin to blow out. Box Hill player Callum Brown tried valiantly to stem the tide for Box Hill, having 26 disposals, while Box Hill got an early taste of life without Max Hall, as he didn't play in this game before being drafted to St Kilda in the Mid-Season Draft yesterday evening thanks to a mild back issue that kept him out of the game. Chad Wingard
, on the comeback trail after tearing his Achilles tendon late in season 2023, kicked two goals for Box Hill from 11 disposals to be the only multiple goalkicker for Box Hill.
For their part, the Bombers and Richmond were involved in a tight tussle in the first half, with Essendon trailing the Tigers by three points at quarter-time and at half-time. But looks could be deceiving, as the Bombers went almost a quarter between goals in the second quarter, taking the lead early in the second quarter but not kicking their second goal of the quarter until right on half-time.
After half-time, it was a one-way procession for the Tigers, as they kicked 12 goals to three after half-time to end up winning comfortably by 61 points at the MCG, in the curtain raiser to the Dreamtime at the 'G game that Saturday night. For Essendon, Jackson Hately
had the most disposals, picking up 28 disposals while Jye Menzie and Campbell Gray each kicked two goals for the Bombers.
Box Hill's loss to Brisbane did the Hawks no favours in terms of keeping pace with the top four. The Bulldogs sit clear on top of the ladder by a game, having won all eight games they have played to date. Williamstown sit second on the ladder, with seven wins and one loss to their ledger, while Geelong and Werribee each have six wins from eight games played (Southport also has six wins but has played nine games so far). The Hawks are one of five teams with five wins to their name, and sit seventh on the VFL ladder so far on percentage. Lurking just outside the top 10 are the Suns (four wins and a draw from seven games) and Sydney (four wins and a draw from eight games).
Essendon have won only two games for the season so far, but the Hawks will need to realise after last weekend that there is no such thing as a sure thing and they will need to bounce back in hostile territory to maintain touch with the top four even this early in the season.
As per usual, the game will be broadcast on the AFL website and 3WBC 94.1FM will provide radio descriptions of the game.
