Disagree.
Effort is indeed a thing. Every single one of us have days where we try harder than others.
Every player has the ability to run both ways, to varying degrees. Whether they choose to exert the physical and mental effort is another matter.
Ditto throwing yourself into packs, onto a ground ball etc. Every player can do it, but whether they do or not is dependent on their willingness to exert the effort.
When they watch players run back the other way, or stand by as their opponent goes harder at the ball, is a deliberate decision by said player on how much effort they're willing to expend.
