The midfield battle is again pivotal to our chances of success.

Not sure what has been happening, but it's not looking good again.

Andrews vs King is going to be pivotal to the game as well.

Andrews was extraordinarily physical with King late last year. I believe it effected King's goal kicking on the night.

Ross for Paton seems like one root vegetable for another.
Lions easily.

You come across like parsnip man but I reckon on current form Ross looks like a turnip and Paton one of those mini carrots that aren't worth the chewing it takes to digest them. At least it's an upgrade.

Thinking Brissy by 5+ goals to be honest.

Just don't think we have it in us to go with that level of midfield

Yeah last week they had:

Neale - 29 disposals, 16 contested, 10 clearances, 7 tackles
Ashcroft - 23 disposals, 16 contested, 9 clearances, 4 tackles
McInerney - 18 disposals, 13 contested, 8 clearances, 6 tackles
Dunkley - 28 disposals, 15 contested, 4 clearances, 8 tackles

And they regain McCluggage who's been pretty good inside this year too.

Feels like the sort of midfield that wipes our lads out.

Agree with that. I think he’s done enough to deserve a stint on ball every now and then just to see how he goes.

I think they'd have to have been training him to be part of that midfield though. Clubs don't tend to mix up the backline too much because being settled and in synch are so important in defence. Perhaps we need to start training soon else to take over that accountable back role and start moving him on ball though. An inside extractor would be bloody handy.

Bunch of manlets

hopefully this is the game Steele gets back to his best. I think we are forgetting how good he normally is. Steele has been way below his best since injury and he is normally our best midfielder and up there with the best in the comp. Our midfield will look a lot better once he can get back into form or injuries heal, although rtb thinks he isn't injured

I reckon stopping Neale is the only real issue. The rest are very good but not going to keep us up at night. Windhager should be able to wear him and then we just have to have the rest break even. We concede a lot of clearances and rely on winning the ball back through pressure to effectively turnover.

Last week the Tigers just had so many go back to their best and we still had every opportunity to win that game except that we seemed to stuff up every entry inside 50 in that last quarter. Plenty were gettable.

I would run Paton in the middle, and keep Sincs where he is most effective, running off HB. Play King up the ground and Steele at FF.
Not sure that would get it done, leave Sincs in the middle & get it done at the source Paton more comfortable down back, Steele just needs to get it done in the middle otherwise he's just wasted down forward.

Ross has never been one to go outside the square too often we know what we get, they will try and intimidate us no doubt.

Our systems are somewhat holding up, but we're getting killed in the midfield week in week out, which I reckon is why the Tigers had their midfield having big numbers. Hawks and Crows midfield also had days out against us. Our forward entry hasn't been too great either, but it's probably a bit symptomatic of our midfield getting smashed as well as being too King focussed.

Throwback to this for Paton's inclusion - Papley, Charlie, Eddie ... The star scalps of an unheralded super stopper.

This would be a good role for him I think (provided he still has the leg speed) - keep it simple; just negate Cameron that's it. Then we hope we get the crap versions of Daniher & Hippy and if so that is their forward line neutered.

Sincs goes into the middle and Jimmy and Nas play HBF. I reckon Jimmy has improved a lot in terms of the kicks he bites off - he can still be pretty expansive but has (mostly) cut out the impossible kicks into the middle which lead to turnover goals if they aren't perfect.

Crouch is just not getting the love it seems, he is having a season almost back up there with his best. If we get Sincs in there and Steele is able to give more, it's by no means a world beating core trio, but with Windy looking good and stints from Gresh and Owens (please!) and Hill / Wood playing well on the wings we're better than many here are giving us credit for.

I think we win this one.

Steele goes to Neale, Crouch to Dunkley. Windy on Ashcroft, Marshall takes care of McInerney. Saints by lots.

I watched the Brisbane-Hawks game a couple of weeks back and the Lions were very ordinary. Makes me think this game is winnable. Admittedly that was at the MCG but the Lions are a different specie away from the Gabba. My biggest concern is Cameron. If we can contain him we are definitely a chance. Not confident that Paton can get the job done though. If not him, who do we go with?

Keep it tight in the first half and we can run over then in the second half like Hawthorn did. Heres hoping.

Really think we need Windy to go with Neale.
Was it our last game against them when he kept Neale (who was in redhot form) to about 13 or so touches? And actually racked up more than that himself.
Did a fantastic job at removing his influence.
Think we lost that game, but cannot fault how well he shut him down.

I think its a great idea but the issue is that we no longer play defensive stoppers on particular forwards. Its all zones and player A moves to cover Player B's man.

The question is if you play Paton as purely a lockdown on Cameron (a job he's done very well in the past) does it throw the rest of the defence out of kilter?

Speaking of defence - is Dougal playing?
