Pre Ross, until he got injured it was always Paton who did the defensive job on the oppo's best small forward.

Paton's problem is that he can't attack AND defend at the same time which is what Ross wants.

I'd give him first crack and say I don't care if you don't get a kick, as long at Cameron doesn't either.
He had a good patch there in 2020 against the best small forwards in the game like Papley. I think Cameron was among them. I don't think he's in that kind of form now. I'm more worried about Cameron than I am about their perceived midfield dominance.

Yeah I agree he's not in the best of form - but I see it a bit like Windy playing a run with role. Does simplifying the role make it easier for him?

Webster is a naturally more attacking player so Paton is the best choice for a purely defensive role.

Anyway - I doubt it will happen unless Ross's attitude to tonight is a lock down, one point victory is enough, lets get the win and who gives a stuff about spectacle sort of night.

Blast from the past time:

Yesterday George jogged my memory about a match indelibly burned into the hearts of many Saints fans. St Kilda vs Brisbane, Marvel Stadium, Rd 22 2005.

The same match up 18 years ago, at very different times in both clubs' histories, indeed a very different time in the AFL's history, some might even say its peak.

Spoiler alert: we win by a record highest ever score, Brisbane loses by its record lowest. Milney kicks 11. We do it without Gehrig, Kosi, X Clarke and Goose. 46106 people show up, even if it was cold and the trains didn't work (probably). Hamill smashes Akamanis out of the game in the first 2 mins in a brutal but fair bump that would get him a lot more than 2 weeks these days. The whole thing is ****ing awesome.

When We Were Kings: my god what an awesome list! Cain Ackland, Matt Ferguson, Aaron Fiora, and Raph Clarke are probably your bottom 4 then there's Aussie Jones, Frankie Peckett, Andrew Thompson, Brett Voss, Stephen Powell, Jason Gram, Luke Ball, Jimmy Gwilt, Joey Montagna, Stevie Baker, Jason Blake, and the cream at the top - Harves, Hayes, Dal, Hamill, BJ, Milney and Roo, plus GT and Burkey in the box. That's not even counting; Gehrig, Chips, Max Hudgeton, Guerra, Wool, Mini, Luke Penny, Allan Murray, Kosi, X Clarke and Goose, all on the sidelines. We caught the Lions at the end of their era, at their most vulnerable, and we shatterered them, literally in the case of Hamill and Akamanis.

What's interesting about this match beyond its total awesomeness is how the past blends into the future:

Hayes:
PAST - starring role in midfield
PRESENT - Midfield coach

Harvey:
PAST - starring role in midfield
PRESENT - Forward coach

Goddard:
PAST - starring role in backline
PRESENT - Development coach

Dal Santo
PAST - starring role in full forward, kicked 3 goals
PRESENT - St Kilda AFLW coach

Blake:
PAST - starring role as undersized ruck
PRESENT - board member, partially responsible for wooing Ross Lyon back to Moorabbin

Milne:
PAST - starring role as perhaps greatest forward pocket ever in one of of his best games.
PRESENT - father of dependable Sandringham backman

S Silvani:
PAST - special comments commentator
PRESENT - St Kilda list manager

Bassat:
PAST - company sponsor for the match (check out the seek.com banners around the ground)
PRESENT - club president

Higgins:
PAST - delighted little Saints fan in the crowd held up to the camera after Milney kicks his eighth goal at the end of 3Q
PRESENT - starring role as forward pocket

OK lets do the rest...
M Voss:
PAST - starring role as midfielder playing a lone hand for traffic cones
PRESENT - hilarious role as inept coach at hated rival club

Hamill:
PAST - starring role as forward/gangster, set the tone
PRESENT - unclear role at hated rival club

C Scott:
PAST - patsy for Nick Riewoldt to wipe his feet on
PRESENT - respected Senior Coach of slowly fading power

McQualter:
PAST - Saints squad player
PRESENT - Caretaker coach of slowly fading power

Enjoy!

I think I get more nervous than the players. Having my usual pre match butterflies.

This game could go either way. Would love one of those almost surprising early season performances. Brisbane a good outfit though. Tough game.

It will be our young boys that will need to get going. Owens needs to get a bit of ball on the dry deck and Steele is due a bigger game. King to do his stuff. Caminiti to slip under the radar.

Go Saints!

Just got home and I'm trying to get as many bourbon and cokes into me as possible before kick off to deal with the stress of watching us play tonight.

Not confident but still hopeful, Brisbane have a better team than us on paper but I'm hoping we can rise to the occasion and get a great underdog win.

We need our senior players to step for us but we also we need our young guns to fire with Owens, Phillipou, NWM, Windhager, Caminiti and Sharman.

I'm more confident of our young guns delivering tonight than our senior players but we need them all delivering along with RTB to get a win tonight,

I really hope the boys get up for Spuds game. Watching the promo on Foxtel got the emotions going.
