The Hawks have a little mid-season getaway from the Melbourne winter with a trip up to Southport to play the Sharks on their home deck. The Hawks squeaked out a one point victory over Geelong last weekend for their ninth win of the season, and are percentage ahead of the Sharks, who lost their most recent game against the Giants on the last Saturday in June. The Sharks are coming off a bye and will be keen to atone for their most recent loss at home to the Giants.
In the context of the season, this game shapes up to be a real eight pointer for Box Hill. The Hawks are one of three clubs tied on nine wins for the season so far, and trail the Cats by percentage for fourth position on the ladder. The Sharks opened the season with a string of victories but have come back to the pack somewhat and they will be looking to cement their position in the top four by getting back on the winners' list.
The Werribee Tigers are currently on top of the ladder with 11 wins, followed by the Lions and Bulldogs on 10 wins each, so a win for Box Hill could be crucial in securing a top four finish.
The Hawks owed their victory over Geelong last weekend to Finn Maginness, who kicked the winning goal and had 25 disposals, seven tackles and three clearances as he pressed for a recall to the senior team.
The Hawks have made four changes to the side that beat the Cats, with Seamus Mitchell back in the squad, while Andreas Stefanakis and Daniel Wood come back into the side. The Hawks also give a VFL debut to Ned Maginness, the younger brother of Finn. Ned is a 194cm midfielder who is playing out his top aged year for the Sandringham Dragons in the U-18s league as he builds towards the AFL draft later this year. He will wear #82 for Box Hill tomorrow.
Box Hill were forced into three changes for the game against the Sharks, with Chad Wingard and Jasper Scaife forced to miss the game through injury, while Josh Ward won a recall to the senior team. The Hawks also elected to omit Seb Amoroso from the team to allow Seamus Mitchell, Stefanakis, Wood and Ned Maginness into the Hawks team.
