Last Game

Essendon: The Bombers had one of their more disappointing losses to then bottom side West Coast in Perth, going down by 10 points in a seesawing affair where there were 11 lead changes. Dylan Shiel continued his good run of form with 26 disposals, whilst key forward Peter Wright unusually struggled to convert opportunities into goals, kicking 4 goals 4 behinds.

Sydney: The Swans really ground St. Kilda into dust with an exceptional defensive display, winning by 51 points where they led from halfway through the first quarter for the rest of the game. Half back Jake Lloyd had a whopping 39 disposals, whilst medium forward Isaac Heeney was excellent inside 50, kicking 3 goals from 11 disposals.

Sydney defence vs Essendon forward line

So far Essendon have kicked a goal 20.7% of the time it enters their forward 50, 17th in the AFL. Sydney concede a goal 21.33% of the time it enters their forward 50, which is currently 5th in the AFL this season. All eyes will be on Peter Wright up against Tom McCartin, the younger of the brothers having a good game against the bigger key forward last time these sides met, Wright only kicking the two goals. Since then however Essendon have had Jake Stringer and Harrison Jones return to the side to provide a bit of support for him, the pair most likely taken by older brother Patrick and co-captain Dane Rampe respectively.

Midfield/rucks battle

In the contested side of things, Sydney are 10th for both clearance and contested possession difference so far this year, whilst the Dons are languishing at 14th and 15th for those stats respectively. After being mocked by Sydney captain Luke Parker about being "soft" last time the teams played, expect Essendon to respond to those taunts and try to knock him off his game, and the likes of an in form Dylan Shiel and Darcy Parish will hopefully find some balance in their play finally, whilst Callum Mills will be the man for the Swans, the midfielder well placed for All Australian honours and a sneaky chance at a Brownlow medal at this point. On the outside, look for Kyle Langford to continue to build after returning from a long term hamstring injury on the weekend whilst young gun Errol Gulden will likely be his direct match up in that they'll line up next to each other and then not see each other again. Rucks wise, Tom Hickey has been unlucky with injuries this year and will face a stern test from Sam Draper and Andrew Phillips, the Essendon pair enjoying their tandem this year.

Sydney forward line vs Essendon defence

Sydney have been pretty efficient going inside 50 this year, kicking a goal 24.24% of the time it enters forward 50, 5th in the AFL. Essendon's defence has been very leaky, conceding a goal 26.14% of the time it enters defensive 50, which is 17th in the AFL currently. This could be a romp of epic proportions, Essendon will probably be forced to bring Zach Reid into the side to go against Logan McDonald whilst Jayden Laverde is the most likely match up for Lance Franklin, Sydney's lynchpin having 30 goals this year from his 12 games and will be keen to keep his excellent record against the Bombers going. Dangerous medium Isaac Heeney will likely receive attention from Jake Kelly, the medium defender adopting a no frills approach for the Dons.

X-Factor Player

Will Hayward has finally gotten some consistency behind him this year, kicking 19 goals in 14 games and only being held goalless twice. After kicking 2 against the Dons last start, look for him to repeat the dose.

Key stat

Essendon: Goals/inside 50 conceded. They're terrible at it and they really need to fix that if they're going to do anything this game.

Sydney: Clearances. A side that prides itself on its contested work, Sydney would be disappointed to be outside the top 8 for this stat.

Tip

We really really suck, but expect a response this week. Still think Swans win by 22 though.

Snelling to be Sub (Wasn’t quite ready)

Having Phillips out cost us in the middle last night and down forward at times as Jones couldn’t scratch himself for 3 1/2 Qtrs

C - Langford Merrett Durham

HF - Shiel Jones Martin

FF - Stringer Wright Perkins

R - Draper Parish Caldwell

Int - Guelfi, Phillips D’Ambrosio , Hobbs
Medi Sub - Snelling

Be interesting to see who will get dropped for parish this week. Getting rid of mass would just make our backline so uneven again, coupled with Mcgrath also being out. He has to stay in imo. Hobbs or durham would be in the firing line but I don’t want either of them out.

First thoughts, will do real changes I want after the injury list comes out.

Out: Ridley (Inj), Heppell (Rest/Manage), Snelling (Inj/too early)

In: Brand, Parish and Reid/BZT

*Bring Brand in for a debut in Melbourne on a smaller ground where it is easier to defend.

*Parish right back in the guts.

*Reid if fit and BZT if not so that we have two genuine KPD and Laverde can play the old Gibson role of peeling off to intercept and punch the ball twenty metres into the stands.

*Ridley needs to be looked after.

*Heppell needs a break. Allow him to be in the box and watch so he knows who to help asd captain for the rest of the season.

*Snelling looked gassed all game. Was brought back far too early.

Reid is injured from memory
He rolled his ankle in the VFL last week and was a "test" for last night's game.

Didn't get selected for the AFL squad, but he's selected in the VFL team today. Not sure if that means he's actually healed up and the extra day made the difference, or if he was already healed up and they chose not to select him, or maybe they're giving him until the last minute and he won't actually play VFL today either. If he doesn't play VFL today though, we can assume he is still too sore to play.

Either way you'd expect a rolled ankle to be healed by next week... but he won't have played in two weeks by then.

I’d honestly even look at giving a few of the kids and players struggling with injury a rest. Need to rotate the squad even with the deplorable depth Available.

In- Brand, Zerk-Thatcher, Wanganeen, Menzie, Parish
Out- Ridley(Inj), Heppell(inj), Ham, Durham(rest), Hobbs(rest)

B Laverde Zerk-Thatcher Kelly
HB Redman Brand Hind
C Merrett Caldwell Perkins
HF Stringer Jones Martin
F Wanganeen Wright Menzie
FOLL: Draper Shiel Parish
I/C: Bryan, Guelfi, Langford, D’Ambrissio
Sub: Snelling

Wanganeen is done for the session ☹️

He played in VFL. Did ok without being great. Got to play him in the AFL team. Need to get games into him.
