Low ToG is often a sign that a player’s position is tenuous.

On that basis - if Buddy does return, McLean is in trouble.
It should be Amartey making way. At least McLean always has a contested mark or two in him, plus is useful as a back up ruck. Amartey was marginally more involved tonight, but really was very poor. Doesn't deserve to survive on that showing.

Have long defended Heeney but no excuses tonight. The previous issue of kicking across the ball to protect the ankle wasn't there. He was just pure shit. Hickey looked like was trying to stab pass 15 m with his two shots on goal. Not sure what the **** he was playing at.

Can understand why there was some frustration with McDonald and Amartey but will say this. From my viewpoint at the ground, our young forwards are held and scragged in the ruck contest more than most in the league yet are never rewarded. If their names were Ben Brown and Max Gawn, they would have had no less than 10 frees for illegal contact tonight.

So pissed that one of those last kicks didn't scrape through. Considering our shit season, today was the first non-Victorian game I have been to this year where we haven't won. GC, Hawthorn, Richmond, WC. all wins. Still have Freo in Perth and Adelaide in Adelaide to go. They better ****ing show up with their kicking boots and a bit of heart for those.

Yeah maybe his legs are just stuffed he didn't look likely , don't think he even wanted to take the second

I think he’s a smart fella, aware of his own mortality, can feel his body breaking down, and probably getting in his own head a bit.

If he was dumber, this would be less of an issue.

You can’t have too many players on your list that hang around Marrickville Markets. Rampe fills the quota

Played a really good style of football and should have been 50+ points up at half time if not for sh*t goal kicking.

However a couple of things we learnt:
Mcdonald, Amartey and Mclean is not a great forward trio.
Goal kicking accuracy is the most important skill in football.
There are idiots who think it's easy to mark Hawkins one on one off turnover ball and in an empty D50 and he shouldn't win the ball.

On the whole more positives than negatives IMO.

Previous two games v Geelong we'd lost by 93 and 81 points.
So really pleased with the way we came out of the blocks tonight.
We came out confident, terrific game plan, executed superbly, (well yay except for that whole kicking for goal bit).

At the end of each qtr I jot down the players I thought played well in that qtr.
First half that list was dominated by the youngsters. And even by the end of game it was a majority representation.
That for me is a very promising sign, no mental scarring, confidence to deliver on the Friday night stage, up against an a highly credentialled opponent.

Going in at half time we had 16 scoring shots to eight.
Now I fully get the frustration with our kicking at goal, but the way we opened up Geelong was not something I recall many teams doing against the Cats.

I think the building blocks are there and last two weeks have shown our ball movement ability when we are on song.
Clearly some things need work but nevertheless I remain confident on the team's ability to deliver going forward.

In some ways our performance tonight was representative of our RD 3 2021 win at the MCG against Richmond.
A repeat under the Thursday night lights next week would be welcome.

(In case you were wondering 17.15.117 to 10.12.72. That would do).

With Logan back, we should just play one of the above (preferably McLean, he actually understands the game And Heeney/Hayward our other marking target.

Clarke would have offered more.
Three talks doesn’t work and it would muck up defensive assignments more.

I don’t think it matters who you choose out of McLean and amartey because neither will end up being excellent. Logan in any case is actually more of a high half forward taking marks on the wing or tony lockett lead from the square

mason cox looks ten times more threatening than amartey McLean

I look at the forward line as a unit and there needs to be at least two guys who are headlining the show. Based on reputation and contract size, Heeney, Hayward and Papley are letting the side down. Their respective outputs this year have been subpar. I don't really hold Amartey and McLean responsible as my expectations (and I suspect the club's) is for them to play their role ie make a contest, clunk a few marks, kick the odd goal and give a chop out in the ruck. Most probably only room for one though.

so much of it is psychological, and i genuinely believe it's heeney's biggest problem at the moment ... it's more than just goalkicking yips, he dropped a sitter early tonight during the period he missed the two early set shots, and almost looked like he was getting in the way
but i think it's in his head, and i won't write him off

no one is writing him off. But he’s got to move out of the forward line. He’s just a straight out liability there currently. Given the season is done maybe play him as a mid forward rotating with Parker so he gets the ball in contests where it has to be moved quickly.

watching him currently is like watching Ian baker finch (look it up). You can’t believe he will hit the ball anywhere where he is aiming and he’s just pushing it. Time after time he’s barely hit the distance

no one is writing him off.
They absolutely are. Criticise his form this year, say he should be dropped etc, but some people go off on diatribes about him never being any good or that he should be traded because he's apparently finished at 27.

I cannot recall a free for us in the ruck almost back to the Cal Sinclair days! We have plenty paid against just never for, it’s infuriating as they are normally half a dozen of one or 6 the other when they pluck a free out!!

Spot on, we are starting to play a lot better and we responded to last few games v cats.

The extra space at the G will suit the way we play too, a lot to be excited for!

I actually didn’t mind the umps.

They generally kept the whistles away - I wish it happened more often.
Was a funny game in the way we played first half was exceptional and we mainly had control of the ball and the contest which meant the umpires were out of the game which was a very good thing.

2nd half was a different story but nothing that blatantly changed the game. Apart from allowing Cats players to run over the mark, which helped them slow the game down. Should have been penalised.

I’ve heard some ridiculous criticisms over the years - but consider that Geelong had equal the amount of inside 50s and their big monster forward kicked 2 goals. Yet some people consider that Melican wasn’t good! Hawkins was Geelongs most targeted forward all night and is a 700 goal champion. Not only that but Melican was spoiling everything and was very reliable with the ball in hand. It feels like some people on here have predetermined views on certain players and regardless of their efforts will find a fault in their performance. Pretty good effort from a bloke who has been languishing in reserves or injured most of the last 3 years.

Umpires made some average calls IMO - Melican’s deliberate punch out of bounds, rowbottoms holding the ball, close’s tackle on Francis. 2 of those dubious frees/non calls led to goals.
But… shouldn’t have been a factor at all. We can only blame ourselves.

100% since Melican has come back he has been a solid contributor and not beaten by some of the best forwards in the game.

Whipping boys will only ever be as good as their worst form. Current or past good form is conveniently forgotten, or leads to them moving on to a new target, until one of the old ones makes a mistake.

Nailed it.
Alas it’s a forum so goes with the territory.

We thoroughly outplayed them so plenty of positives to take out of it. Our defence was immense. Our ball movement through the midfield was sharp. We lowered our eyes on most occasions and took the best option.
Been such an odd year I’m not surprised we found a way to draw the undrawable (new word).
Great to see Gus coming on, Melican/Francis becoming reliable KPDs Braedan becoming a player and Blakey/Gulden continuing their great years. I reckon we have a great list. Just need some more depth in the tall department - hopefully some of this will be addressed in MSD and trade period.

Horse & the coaches must have been going completely spare.

Game plan works to perfection and our players can't kick a goal to save their lives. Like, seriously I'm hard pressed to pick one last night who I would have bet my life on to kick a goal.

As I stated last night, the three talls we have are not going to take us to finals. We need another tall who can consistently kick goals and Amartey is too flaky by far for my liking.

And our smalls let us down as well which is just rubbing salt into the wound.
