Autopsy Round 16: It’s like kissing your sister

Horse & the coaches must have been going completely spare.

Game plan works to perfection and our players can't kick a goal to save their lives. Like, seriously I'm hard pressed to pick one last night who I would have bet my life on to kick a goal.

As I stated last night, the three talls we have are not going to take us to finals. We need another tall who can consistently kick goals and Amartey is too flaky by far for my liking.

And our smalls let us down as well which is just rubbing salt into the wound.
Yips spread like contagion. I’ve played a lot of footy and can’t recall a team that kicked that bad. Going back to u11s!
I’m not convinced we have the next Jeremy Cameron but think we need to temper expectations on our KPFs - they are a very young collective and they normally take longer to develop. Many people had written off Peter Wright before he went to the Bombers. Harry McKay barely played AFL for the first 3 years and then became a Coleman medalist.
I reckon Amartey had a shocker last night but reckon he has huge upside. Has only played 17 games over his career. Logan is a very smart player and will only improve.

not that it was relevant last night ... but i'm wondering when we might see blakey finishing off those moves he starts when running out of defence, the way he follows up and often finds himself free 50-60m out on the run ...
he almost always looks to find a leading forward, and fair enough ... but a bit like campbell, i'd certainly trust blakey to let fly

Really think we're noticing a Bud vacuum

He was a competitive giant and walking self esteem boost for every forward

Always knew things were covered if fit Bud was around

How do you replace a guy like that

you can't

Mentally soft side

how can you say that based on last night?
dominated early and blew that, but climbed off the floor to get back in
blew it again and looked gone, but still kept cracking in, and managed to grab a draw ... against the premiers, a much more experienced side ...
and had fox not hit the post, we'd have won ... despite all the rest of the awful goalkicking
as i've argued earlier in this thread, last night was about the toughest we've been all year ... and we're still not near our best team

We are what we are this year, including not playing with much confidence. So every game (except the training drills like last week) is going to be tough to win. Our midfield really showing something over the last month is at least giving us red hot chances to do so. The supply we're generating from the contest to our outside runners like Gulden, Campbell, Blakey etc. has been awesome to see.

First half was mint ball use.
As good as it gets.

You'd never know that.
The Comm box were obsessed with something. Or something else.

Third quarter. Geelong toughed up.

Even though the goal kicking was ugly. It was pretty breezy at say 20 metres off the ground. Really swirly.

Fox should have swallowed that chance.

I'm sad.

Fresh eggs is always a good thing
fixed

Honestly I don't think Clarke was going to add too much to the game in the fourth.
If we'd had a Fox clone - an athletic impact might have made a big difference in a key moment.
Who would you have subbed out - all the mids were dialled in to the game and doing great. Mclean? Maybe he was going to be the one to take a key grab....

2.2. Only the literal highest goal scorer on the ground.

Melican couldn't get near him, 4 uncontested (!!!) Marks inside 50
2 of them were the kind no defender is going to deal with IMO. When a mid is that free to deliver it into that much space...More the fault of the mid who turned the ball over in a terrible spot and left the team exposed than on Melican

But yeah, Melican can get left well behind a double lead especially at times. Definitely needs to improve on that aspect. Not sure he will though.

Game plan was brilliant by the coach. Unfortunately the execution by the Swans forwards wasn't and that is the game right there. If you can't kick goals you can't win games.

Hope Heeney and Hickey take a thousand extra shots on goals at training this week.

AT goals.

I refer you to the ‘Plagiarism etc’ board, where I’ve posted a detailed explanation as to why ‘on goal’ is so wrong.

Taylor spent more time discussing his daisies than he did the game - he is seriously the most insulting, boorish, over-blown egotistical turd that 7 has ever employed - a complete disgrace.

It’s like being forced to watch a baboon pick its nose, eat it and then jerk off, all while laughing at you.

They didn't deserve a win. They deserved to lose. Goals win games and our goal kicking was downright inept.

poor goal kicking is like any other error , absolutely. Yeah ok if you don't convert you don't deserve it I guess. I meant more they did all you could ask for (given where the club is/recent cats games) to win the game, played it all so well and cost themselves with one skill area

Where as Geelong salvaged the draw imo

Did not miss the 2023 version of Chad one single bit.
Was this not the best our midfield has looked all year, by far?

I think any sane person would prefer Chad in the side, than not.

Heeney is the only ‘on ball’ issue - he reminds me of Brent Tiger Croswell or Rhys-Jones - can turn a game in 10 minutes, but rarely gets more than 15 kicks.

Interesting call, it did look good, and he isn't as consistent both ways this year. But think I would rather have him in all the same , still can offer that x factor, burst of speed
