July 18th, 2021 will go down in the SuperCoach archives as one of the most brutal SBS’s ever known. The day started well enough – North Melbourne’s mascot change from Kangaroos to Seagulls continued to bear fruit and raise even more suspicion that they’ll one day be sent to the Gold Coast, Darcy Parish played another game reminiscent of peak GAJ (in an SC sense anyway) and to top it off, Kane Cornes’ favourite player put in another performance to make him look like the complete and utter dickhead he is and in the process aroused his many thousands of owners. This doesn’t sound that bad, right?
But this is the thing about the SC gods. Nothing they do is without meaning, without purpose, without malice. They look down on us and consider us lesser beings – mere toys to be played with. They’re aware of the struggle a huge portion of us are going through right now – with all of Victoria, NSW and SA in lockdown at the moment, many of us are looking for an outlet to help us escape the shitshow that is real life in 2021. A benevolent deity (or deities) would understand that, but there is a reason why “******* campaigner” is the most commonly used phrase on this board. There is no mercy, no consideration, no escape.

The signs were there early in the round that something had upset the apple cart in SC land. Thursday night went off without a hitch, but on Friday night a peculiar lack of KOTD for Dayne Zorko raised some eyebrows. After being gifted 99 and 109 in the last fortnight, suddenly the SC gods decided to actually punish his mistakes. The usual SC board shitfight ensued, but there were far too many non-owners rejoicing for anyone to really consider that something must be wrong. Following that, confirmation of fraudulent GOAT Dustin Martin’s season ending kidney injury was taken rather well by the herd; those with trades saw it as an excuse to bring in an actual forward premo, while those without were f’ed anyway. We should have been on higher alert.
Saturday started off with a misleading sense of normality – huge scores from popular picks in Steele, Wines and Marshall had a lot of Coaches with their Chols out parading sh*t like “I’m on 850/6 with Steele VC!!” and talking about going 2500. This is what happens with the SC gods – they’ll mislead you and suck you in before hitting you with the kicker. Subtlety is often their strong suit and when the power of KOTD wasn’t even enough to carry the Bont over the ton following a 36 possession outing (yeah he had 15 clangers but FFS it’s the Bont – I can’t believe they even credited him with 15 clangers to begin with) many an experienced campaigner began to clench their anooz in trepid expectation. A combined 300+ from Titch and Olliepig was another attempt by the Corruption Data flogs to throw us off the scent of what was to come – and unfortunately, many of us believed them.

So Sunday. Sunday, bloody ******* Sunday. We’ve already been over the extent that SC gods went to in order to deceive us early on Sunday – FFS, even Trent Bianco went alright for those relying on him to fill in for he-who-must-not-be-named-but-is-made-of-paper-mache. Then, it happened.
Mills and Greene withdrawn. Another injury to Josh Kelly to raise further suspicions that him and Paper Mache Man might have the same genetic defect, or that GWS medical staff are about as incompetent as it gets. Even the one good thing about SC 2021 in Matty Flynn went down, and there’s no chance of him being replaced by Keiren Briggs this week because – you guessed it – he’s also quarantining!!! And what did we get from the SC gods???
Nothing. Nada. Zilch. No trades. No best 18. No averages. Nothing. Nobody cares that there’s absolutely no way anybody could have reasonably prepared for this. Enjoy your donuts, campaigners, and embrace them. We couldn’t give a flying fu**. That was their message. I read somewhere that allowing a thread to be dedicated to Sam Frost had angered our malevolent overlords and this was their punishment. Yet this is not a time to be looking for justification. They will ream us, without lube, as they see fit. It doesn’t matter what we do, who we pick, or who we dedicate a thread to. If they want to punish us, they will. They don’t need a reason.
So in light of all of this – Round 19 is a round of defiance. To stand against those who attempt to hold control of our fates. Against those who refuse to listen to our suggestions. Against those who continually get it wrong. They will try their best – but they will not break us.
PORT ADELAIDE vs COLLINGWOOD
In typical 2021 fashion, we start the round with a game that has already been moved around 45 times. I’ve not really been big on Ollie Wines all season but a season average of 110 through 18 rounds makes his credentials hard to argue with – his 5 round average is even better @ 115.2 and with yet another injury cloud hanging over Josh Kelly, he could be a solid option to trade in at 578k. The Power do have a reasonably soft run home with the exception of the Dogs in Round 23. There’s slim pickings from Port in an SC sense elsewhere – 5 of Travis Boak’s last 8 scores are under the ton while Dan Houston has been nothing short of disastrous for those who brought him in at his basement price a few weeks back. Zac Butters is a chance to return this week but with a 39 in his price cycle and one game at AFL level since Round 4, I’d be wanting another chance to watch him before jumping on.
Where the Pies once supplied us with rookies galore, it’s now their more senior players who have most of our interest. Scott Pendlebury was tempting for a few as a bargain basement M8 after Bucks moved on from the Pies to an Instagram cougar and although a 5 round average of 109.4 makes him look tempting, that does still include a very flash-in-the-pan 167 on Queen’s Birthday in memoriam of the great FIGJAM. One player who definitely isn’t missing his former coach is Jordan De Goey, a permanent switch to the midfield yielding 4 successive scores over 110 and a source of many burst aneurysms for Coaches who started the kent expecting him to play this role from Round 1. He’s only 490k so for those looking to scrap his Kmart edition this week, he may be in reach. Trent Bianco has been reasonably solid as floating DEF/MID cover for most while Brodie Grundy’s lack of a manbun has left me feeling like I don’t know anything anymore. He’s been pretty good since returning but was very disappointing against the Blues last week.

CARLTON vs NORTH MELBOURNE
Sam Walsh. I really shouldn’t need to say anything else other than if you don’t own this prodigy, delete your team. Many are running out of superlatives for the 21-year-old wonderkid who, in the absence of a broken-down Patty Cripps carried the Blues midfield in a manner reminiscent of Crippa in his pomp on the way to a monstrous 193. Walsh’s lowest score in the last month is 131 and he shapes as a common VC option this Saturday. The aforementioned Cripps is in line to return but has been a shadow of his previous SP self this year while down at the op shop, Matty Kennedy might be worth a look for those trying to replace Dustin Martin this week. A heap of midfield time and an average of 93.6 since returning in Round 14 means you could definitely do worse for 434k.
The Roos have provided us with some joy this year and the primary source of that has been a pair of equally splendid, dishonest, point-whoring seagulls in Jack Ziebell and Aaron Hall. The Ziegull has been a beacon of consistency as a faux-forward premo this season and should feast well against a Carlton side who have been very inaccurate in recent times. As much sh*t as we give him though for his new home, it’s his right-hand man in Hall who is being anointed into the Gulling Hall of Fame this week after managing to rack up 31 possessions against the Bombers without a single one of them being contested. Ben Cunnington plays a much more respectable style of football and is on a streak of 8 consecutive tons, while for those keen to get creative Jy Simpkin has a 5 round average of 110 and Tarryn Thomas has shown some nice signs in midfield. At 538k and 432k respectively, Coaches looking for cut-price replacements for a whole host of injured/COVID impacted stars should take a look.

BRISBANE vs GOLD COAST
A third pretty average performance in a row from the Zorko the “Magnificent” was finally punished by the powers that be, his 74 his worst score since Round 5 and in the process dropping him to 604k with a BE of 180. He’s a bit irrelevant as a trade in for most but another ordinary performance (and a lack of ridiculous KOTD) may leave him available as a luxury trade in for finals. Jarryd Lyons has had a quiet fortnight by his lofty standards but prior to that did not seem to be affected by the return of Lachie Neale, who while technically boasting a SP average since returning (112.6) has been pretty underwhelming outside of some downhill skiing against the Roos. He’s only 575k and is another on the list for potential Josh Kelly replacements. Unlike Lyons, Suitcase McCluggage has completely lost his viability since the return of Piggy Neale while down back Daniel Rich just keeps on keeping on.
To talk about the Suns is to talk about Touk Miller who has continued an absurd streak of 11 tons in a row – and if you look a little harder, only one of those has been under 115. He’s still a relative POD (7.9% ownership overall) and in recent weeks he’s been ably supported by Jeremy Sharp, those who jumped on the young Sun rewarded with a massive 115 last week. He’s probably the best option going around as long term M9 cover and given the level of carnage this season keeps providing, there’s little doubt he’s going to be needed.
WEST COAST vs ST. KILDA
The Human Earthquake, the Thighmaster, Shannon Hurn was a bargain basement pick @ 409k in Round 11 and has averaged 104.5 since – he’s a much loved cult figure around here and, old man injuries aside, he should continue his solid form for the rest of the year. A few kenties jumped on Nic Naitanui after Brodie Grundy injured his neck and evidently his hair follicles in the process and he’s been very good for them – he also hasn’t dropped under the ton for 11 weeks and although he’s a step below the true SP rucks, Max Gawn’s recent form means those with Nic aren’t losing much at all. Connor West debuted last week and was pretty solid with 71 – one to watch if some Coaches are desperate for cheap cover. He’s only 102k.
There are some players who are very good at football. There are some players who are extraordinarily KOTD by the nerds at CD who blow their collective loads over every regulation 2m handball. What happens when you get a player who is the blessed combination of both?Marcus Bontempelli.Jack Steele. It’s pretty hard to argue that that Saints skipper doesn’t get looked after but there’s no doubting he’s been in some incredible form – 7 tons in a row, the lowest of them being 126 and 5!! of them 140+. It’s an absurd run, and for those with him he’s the safest VC/C option going around at present. His favourite teammate in Rowan Marshall has quickly rounded into form following an injury layoff but will unfortunately be missing this week because.. rona. He’ll be joined on the sidelines by Tom Highmore who has well and truly completed his Marty Hore-esque redemption arc, getting to 331k when it seemed more likely Ratts would delist him come November.

MELBOURNE vs WESTERN BULLDOGS
Can anyone here imagine a universe where Max Gawn is under 560k? There’s something not right with the Big Bearded One and that something is Luke Jackson, who is currently acting like a leech to big Maxxxy’s scoring. His highest score in the last 4 weeks is 103, firmly keeping him below SP territory and on current form he’s not worth using the VC/C on. His midfielders still are – the Olliepig is slowly crackling back into form after an ordinary month while Christian Petracca posted this third score over 123 in a row. The Trac seems to love big games so could be worth a thought as a captain option this week. I spruiked Christian Salem a few weeks back and he’s been pretty good for those who jumped on @ 460k despite having to share his chips with Steven May, whose great 5 weeks came to an abrupt halt with 67 against the Hawks.
Jack Macrae just doesn’t play a bad game – when you have one score under the ton all season (and that score is 97) any team without you may as well give up. For all the talk about the Bont he’s actually dropped under that fabled mark twice in the last 3 weeks – there must be some voodoo sh*t going on because the Brownlow favourite has both forgotten how to kick but more importantly to all of us, is actually being punished for it. Josh Dunkley returned, ran out of gas and then swiftly went on his way to being deconditioned again due to some forced quarantine, while Bailey Dale continues to be solid as a forward pick and is worth a look for those looking to replace Kmart De Goey this week at 481k. Caleb Daniel is a reasonably popular pick with 20% ownership but has been rather irrelevant this year compared to the wealth of proper backline seagulls to choose from.
ADELAIDE vs HAWTHORN
The Crows’ only real SC relevant player in piggy Laird racked up the stats as usual but didn’t have any great influence, crawling over the ton to 104 to make his 6th ton in succession. Everyone has him so his scoring is pretty unimportant. I suppose Ben Keays exists but unless you’re desperate for a cheapish M8 I’d be looking elsewhere.
Tom Mitchell played his best game since his Brownlow year in 2018 on the way to a whopping 171 and has been in rather imperious form since the bye, a low score of 110 since the pig took a well-deserved rest. His ownership is deceptively low @ 24.5% and he’s a good chance of going large again against the Crows’ poor midfield depth. Ned Reeves finally returned just in time for all the injury carnage to hit and make any cash he makes completely useless while Jai Newcombe has been exposed as a false prophet by Lachie Bramble, Hawthorn’s true 102k saviour backing up his 120 against the Dockers with a 91 last week. He looks like a lock to hold his place for the rest of the year, and Coaches with one of him or the Suns’ Sharp are likely best placed for the run home.

SYDNEY vs FREMANTLE
Callum Mills’ absence through quarantine will continue this week in a serious stroke of reverse-KOTD for those unlucky enough to own the number 1 ranked defender in the comp (both by average and total score prior to last week). Jake Lloyd is still an incredibly tasty trade in @ 510k but has definitely lost his appetite a fraction this year while for those looking for a risky POD replacement for Josh Kelly (if he ends up dead), Luke Parker currently has a 5 round average of 111.4 and looks like being in the middle of one of those runs where he does a reasonable SP impression. If Isaac Heeney could learn how to do an SP impression at all, that would be much appreciated for the 15% of plebs stuck with him but to his credit a 3-round-average of 87 for what should be your F6 isn’t terrible.
Sean Darcy’s incredible 3 week stretch of taking the absolute piss out of SuperCoach was unfortunately cut short by a final term knee injury yet he still managed to put up a 156 to take his 3 round average to a ridiculous 177.3! He’s still a chance of suiting up against the Swans this week and at only 2.8% ownership, those with him will be laughing given at the moment he’s good for 50 points a week over Max Gawn. Luke Ryan remains a consistent option down back while Andy Brayshaw is probably the pick of Freo midfield group that includes the fossilised edition of David Mundy, a hemiplegic Nat Fyfe and fake premo (not even subpremo – the flog isn’t averaging 90) Adam Cerra.

GEELONG vs RICHMOND
The Dangerman (I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that PDF is not an acceptable nickname for this kent) relied heavily on his 3 snags last week to post his second ton of the season following his mammoth 184 2 weeks back. He has looked more and more like his old self and shapes as a key player for the run home, as does Tom Stewart who has rebounded from a terrible showing against the Lions 3 weeks ago with 3 successive tons. At 532k, he’s actually still pretty good value for his output. Another player who may present value if you’ve got the Kahunas is Cam Guthrie – while a combination of injuries and the return of Danger has undoubtedly hampered his early season scoring, back to back tons and a price of 483k has some looking his way as a bargain bin pick up. Tom Hawkins continues to do KPF things and a Round 23 matchup with Steven May would make me wary if I didn’t already own him.
Dustin Martin’s kidney laceration is terrible news for the man himself but good news for the blood pressure of SuperCoaches who can stop watching the so-called GOAT lairise around the field like he owns the ******* joint. He’s on the never again list for many and a popular replacement will be Shai Bolton, Coaches hoping that the man with the fastest healing bones in the comp will take on even more midfield responsibility with Dusty out. At only 420k, he’s pretty hard to look past. Jayden Short posted his second ton in successful followingthe hitmanunfortunate injury to Bachar Houli and he SHOULD maintain a monopoly on the chips at Richmond for the rest of the season.
ESSENDON vs GWS
In contrast to the Roos' dishonourable seagull Batman and Robin, the Bombers’ pair of midfield jets in Darcy Parish and Zac Merrett continued their stellar recent form. Parish being a viable captain option each week is still baffling to me but he rebounded from his first poor game since his star turn to deliver 138, while Merrett’s 114 was slightly disappointing in the context of 39 possessions. Essendon are not without their own Gull though and despite a return to form with 4 consecutive tons, Jordan Ridley dipped under that mark with 87 last week but is still good value at 518k. Those with Dyson Heppell continued to reap the rewards following his return from thumb surgery and although I’d sooner go back to my ex-girlfriend than trade in Jake Stringer, he’s hit some incredible form in the last month with a prospect of a new contract on the horizon. 488k and a 5 round average of 115 (admittedly including that epic 180) – anyone got the Chol?
Back in the 2000s, Blues supporters used say that “Carrazzo” was Italian for “turnover”. Watching Tim Taranto play makes me think we may well have to rewrite the dictionary as another display of ball-butchering dragged his score down. Toby Greene was lost to quarantine and Keiren Briggs will be following him, in disheartening news for those of us with the big man as floating bench cover given he was likely to get a game following the injury to Matty Flynn. Hopefully for Flynn’s sake they feed the poor kent a better quality diet than whatever Josh Kelly and Lachie Whitfield are living on – the GWS paper mache brothers both under clouds this week for different reasons. Kelly rolled his bung ankle but is reportedly expected to play while Whitfield is due back from concussion this week. Whether they actually suit up is anyone’s guess.

Alright kents. This round and likely remainder of this season shapes as having carnage of unforeseen proportions, and I know for a lot of us at the moment real life is a bit sh*t. 3 states in lockdown will attest to that – so I hope that my essay of randomness and GIFs can provide a little bit of light in what is a pretty ordinary time for most. Like I said earlier – Round 19 is a round of defiance against the SC gods; they have forsaken us. They have set the precedent that unless games get cancelled, we aren’t getting anything. So we have no choice but to stand against them. They are trying to divide us as some benefit from the carnage while others suffer – at the end of the day, we’re just pawns in their game. So fu** them
