Is it really a surprise though, I feel like he was pretty terrible for most of last year

I feel like in the chaos of last year plus his role being switched around I figured the terrible performances had some mildly mitigating factors (he was still pretty bad).

I would agree with anyone suggesting this performance in round 1 is a new level of bad

Yeah...has definitely reached new depths of crapness....but I reckon he was pretty damn bad last year until they gave him a rocket that time

Nowhere near as bad

Gaff averaged 20 touches a game and just under 3 tackles in 2023.

Compared to 4 touches and no tackles.

His worst game in 2023 ended with him having 6 touches and he was made the sub the following week (vs Richmond), came on early due to an injury and had 24 touches

Just looked and you're right, for some reason I thought he was completely useless last year too.
In my defence I've tried to block most of last season from my memory though.
Would wager a lot of those possessions were his usual mark on the hbf or wing, stop, wait an eternity for the opposition to stream forward and end up kicking a dinky little kick backwards or sideways though

Would be interesting to see Gaffs metres gained over the journey. He's the conduit so the role is link up play, staying involved, transitioning into attack. 30m dump kicks around the corner straight to the opposition still register as a kick but they don't help us out much.

People thinking Gaff possessions are better than no possessions. I would argue him not killing our momentum when we do have it is better than his dinky little chip sideways and trudge off into the background. David King highlighted it last year that he was that momentum killer and there was also that stat flying around that he was one of the worst in the league for retention of possession from kicks going forward (?) or something.
Outside of possession numbers he really is a liability defensively.
Also I find that dropping a player and they deciding to turn up after that is an indictment on said player which he did last year when he was made the sub. Shows he was just cruising prior to that which with a young team looking for guidance perhaps isn't what you want from a senior player setting the tone.

Gaff has to be dropped on the back of that. Gotta set standards.

Give Hall one more week in the magoos (hopefully they have another trial this week). Plus need to give Ginbey mid minutes, have to find out early this year if he is ready or not. Can’t roll with Ginbey, Reid and Hall in the guts yet.

Out- Gaff, Witherdeb
In- Jones, Dewar (Sub)

Round 2
Hough (Greene) - Barrass- Cole
Jones - Gov - Duggan
Hunt - Reid - Chesser
Cripps - Darling - Petruccelle
Long - Oscar - Waterman
Williams- Yeo - Kelly
Ginbey - Brockman - Edwards - Jamieson

Sub- Dewar

I don’t see how anyone who watched Chesser after being subbed on doesn’t think he deserves a run. Showed more in a quarter than some blokes have in 2 seasons.

Barrass gets to make Hogan look like pick 1 next week. Seriously hope he has a better game.
If you ignore his Fremantle stint, Hogan is one of the more accomplished tall forwards we’ve seen in recent years.

All I want this year and we all know we won't get many wins this season. That's a given of where we are at. I just want accountability and that includes our match committee at the selection table.
We made an obvious error in selecting Gaff for round 1 while leaving Chesser and JJ out. I can take Gaff if we have injury and no one else but this week we didn't and it was a huge mistake on our coaches part.

We can't be gifting games anymore even if it hurts our experience. It's actually heartening to see finally maybe Gaff will be held accountable and dropped for once and hopefully a long stint on the sidelines. Gaff should only be used if we have injury so bad to warrant his selection. I'm hoping it's for a very long time. Credits need to go this season. Chesser is ready and deserves a stretch of games while leaving out JJ half back pace and rebounding aswell makes no sense. Gaff should have a decent stretch in the WAFL.

But it's not just Gaff it's Witho and Cole and Darling. If you continue to offer nothing on the ground you should go back to the twos. My respect and trust for Simmo will go down to one thing and that is he must be willing to finally drop the axe on underperforming seniors because they are not helping us and I can't see the leadership to help our youth if they aren't leading the way on the field. Simmo and the coaches failed us round 1.
I can't see him making it through the year. He will get the sack if the same selection errors keep happening. It's not about winning for us but as a coach you must get it right on who goes out each week. We will see what happens this week but make no mistake the screws are tightening and us supporters have had enough with the credits.

If Gaff is dropped (and I think he should be) and goes back to WAFL and is bog a couple of weeks running he should be in the selection mix with everyone else.
If the club aren't going to pick him regardless of form he should be told and given the option to retire gracefully if he doesn't want to play in the magoos.

Which is exactly what they should have said last year.. here is your options. Pick one in terms of retirement or wafl

The club looks foolish anyway.. it’s just the level that can be changed and selection integrity has to come into it..

At the end of the day we have $900,000 to a million bucks tied up into a wingman… and not a Peter matera wingman who could win games off his own boot or change games… here we have a slow guy with questionable skills who for all his good points years ago has never been a game winner or a game changer….

Correct.
The money is spent. No point stinking up the team to justify the spend. It was the wrong call in hindsight, everyone knows it. Just pick the best team available, not the most expensive one.

Did that once with Priddis, and once was enough. If Gaff goes what's next? Retire Jack Darling? Tell Alex Witherden he's too slow to play the game? It's not going to happen.
Darling and Witho arent in the same boat. Darling can play his way back to form, was underdone. Witho has more upside than Gaff. Started sliding last year. Blind Freddy can see Gaff is done.

I'd like them to stick with Edwards a bit longer. He has good hands, releases the ball to the outside well and finds space in traffic. I think he's the sort that may benefit from a stronger ruck once Flynn is back and make a good first receiver.

In saying that, he is definitely not quick and needs to work on his defensive game. If he can play to his strengths and lift his defensive output, he may develop to complement our outside players well.

Echo others with the Chesser for Gaff swap.

So did JJ let Simmos lawn die over the summer? Cant understand how he has been knocked down the pecking order. He was fantastic early last year before injury. I would have JJ before Witherden any day.
There was never any reported injury and he was back training with Kelly earlier than most. So I would love to know why Simmo dislikes him.
