Autopsy Round 2, 2025: Hawthorn give Carlton the Blues

KARLton fans spitting chips over umpiring, on the radio. I thought that hawks got the wrong end of things, at the ground.

Replay will be interesting.
I think both teams would feel hard done by simply because it was over umpired to within an inch of its life. The inconsistency in advantage calls, HTB and free kicks in marking contests were as bad as you will ever see. Really poorly umpired game.

Sis’s ability to play the moments sticks out. Big contested mark on a wet day to clinch the game with another goal. I was wondering whether the move was the right one with what we would be missing behind the ball, but you can’t question the move when he does stuff like this.
We have a lot of players who seem to want the moment.

I haven't seen a player so young who wants to be involved when the whips are cracking as much as Wiz does since... dare I say it.

Sis and dimma have no chance at AA with no set position. I love what it brings

Yeah this needs to stop. Every time a player successfully tackles Watson, they seem to feel like he needs to have his head buried in the turf. Can't just ignore it forever umps.

Yea, i noticed the first tackle on Watson for the game, drove the forearm into the back of his neck while he was on the ground.

Same thing happened to Daisy right before half time grab the back of the neck while on the ground.

Did anyone notice that every time Moore marked then turned to run he got tackled, like Carlton were waiting for it, and I think Gunston changed the game as other then Chol no one was really marking the ball until he came on in the forward line.

Yes, I think that Carlton would've gone through a bit of vision about handball chains and specifically the tendency of Moore/Macdonald types to change the angles. They interrupted a few of them where it looked like they anticipated what came next. It'll be fascinating to see how our transition game develops over the season, as we've been getting away with a couple of things for years now (the kick-in set plays, for example) that teams will no doubt start finding more ways to combat. Already Cmac missing a few weeks will hurt us there. Along with Moore he's probably the most important cog in those scoring chains, due to his ability to cover distance at speed yet still provide elite disposal.

Yeah they paid every single 50-50. Problem was once they'd started doing it they had to do it all game - and in the wet it just made it ridiculous. Both sides got and gave away frees that shouldn't have been paid.

So three games in a row now where the opposition have thrown everything at us and come up short. The last two especially.

I think we're seen as vulnerable in the contested ball, which we are. But I also think that the effort clubs have to put into exploiting this really robs them of the outside game and allows us much easier slicing on the rebound.

In both of these arm wrestles, when the other team has had to shift from arm wrestle to trying to win it, they've been exposed and we've got a run of goals.

Right now we are a side where you need to execute everything perfectly over four quarters to beat us. What a great turnaround from last year where we were the side that would say "we went with them for 2 and half quartres but just couldn't match their polish and finishing"

Sam Mitchell is dominating this coaching gig

I don't think that was the umps A team out there. Almost all of the advantage calls were just woeful. Whistle goes, players stop, players look around, ball comes to a rest, grass grows, time passes, a player tentatively picks up the ball - PLAY ON ADVANTAGE!

Carlton were tackling Moore and Day before they had the ball in every contest. Essendon did it last week too. It's just something to work through and become a bit less predictable with.

Maybe having a senior player as a sub is a genuine master stroke? You're right about Gunston turning the game.

I don't know what was going on there with the advantage call - the Blues one where Meek gave away a free for HTB and the goal was kicked, then brought back for a set shot seemed the worst (I say seemed because maybe it whistle went and noone heard it).

Meek was pretty good. Ruck is a strange position, probably the only one where both players could have great games respectively.

Though TDK absolutely bested him, which isn't a big deal as TDK is probably going to develop into the best ruckman in the league.
The good thing about having Meek is that even when the opposition ruck has his measure (as TDK did last night) he will still contribute towards the team winning.

He had 13 disposals and 37 hit outs which is still a decent nights work for a ruckman.

And really you don't need a superstar ruck like TDK to win a premiership, a next level down workhorse like Meek will get it done.

What a win! We just beat three of our top five most hated teams... Syd, ess, bluuz/!

  • don't like this injuries early in each game stuff!
  • impressed by CJ ! Looks more comfortable in defence for mine.
  • Day, although did get caught with the ball, he was involved in a lot of our foray frwd, love the way he just glides across the ground and delivers it on a platter.
  • Newk absolute monster game.
  • Ward was fantastic as was Mackenzie. Our second tier midfield pairing coming on very well.
  • Chol, excellent.
  • Massimo and Amon are deadly with ball in hand their workrate without it is as just as impressive.

We do need Worpel back though, our contest work has been a bit below average which can't be sustainable.
Great to see gunners coming on and doing so well.
Agree re CJ, he's not a winger, he's a half back.

He's much better when he can get the ball form half back and the whole ground is open in front of him.
