The first one in particular clearly really messed with him. He injured it about half way through that first year, but he bravely played on for several weeks with it (before the reconstruction, after about R19), during which time his numbers dropped. He then struggled big-time the following season and it was then reported at the end of that year that he'd had a lot of ongoing issues with the reconstructed shoulder throughout that season, which also meant he wasn't playing in his preferred inside position anywhere near as much as he otherwise would have- presumably to protect his shoulder. His confidence and form both took big hits. He was very very lucky that we didn't have anyone decent to replace him with, as he would have been out of the team if we did, I imagine.

Then last year he continued to struggle for about the first half of the year, but then he started to finally get his old spark back (although not his old numbers) and he played about 5 good weeks in a row (where he seemed much more like old self again), but then he dislocated the other shoulder and off for another reco!

In his first game back from that he played very well in JLT1 this year, but since has been passed by Jack Steele at a rate of knots, which has IMO put his place in the team in jeopardy going forward, as he doesn't have the versatility to play anywhere but the guts to an acceptable level and there are only so many spots there.
I think some young guys, especially early in their career need a few good solid preseasons and seasons proper to get going. Look at Brad Sheppard.. he was much maligned by us for the longest time, but was super important for us in 2015. Still a decent player and solid best 22.

And that's the problem we had with our list... old players, kids and nothing in between.

So you have to play the kids, even if they're not ready.

We had the same problem for a while. It's just the cycle of life in AFL I guess, sometimes you lose those 25-28 year old guys. The kids will come good. Saints already looked a ****load better last week. NRoo is a big loss, but opens up opportunities for other players. Same way it did for Gov with us down back.

Nah, we totally ducked up under Lyon and made some putrid decisions.

Pretty much 80% of our kids were duds and we list Cripps back you.

When we finally got it right in 2013, we had to play 1St year players regardless.

And even the kids who have got 3-4 years experience and preseason are not delivering goods at the moment.

Our exp players are not performig well at the moment.

I was watching syd vs doggies game today and our team is way off the mark.

I know Jon Ralph loves a headline but if you look at the numbers properly...

Over the past 20 years teams starting 0-2 and making the eight;

1997: St.Kilda (Finished 1st, Runners up in '97 GF), Sydney (Finished 6th)
1999: North Melbourne (Premiers), Sydney (8th)
2000: North Melbourne (4th), Hawthorn (8th)
2001: Adelaide (8th)
2002: Port Adelaide (1st)
2003: Port Adelaide (1st)
2004: Geelong (4th), Essendon (8th)
2006: Sydney (4th), Melbourne (7th)
2007: North Melbourne (4th)
2013: Carlton* (8th)
2014: Sydney (1st, Runners up in '14 GF)

*Drugs Saga

16 teams since 1997 have started 0-2 and made the eight. So 11 years of the 19 listed has a team(s) started 0-2 and finished in the eight. 57%.

Of the team(s) that started 0-2, 56% of the time they made the top four.

3 teams have made the Grand Final from 0-2 and North in 1999 is the only side to win a premiership from 0-2.

But riveting stuff as always from Ralphy...

Keep those stats ready because I think we may need them in a day or two lol.

concussions threaten saint - the australian - what is this about

Yeah Dempster thinking of retiring because of concussions from years of playing footy , he is consulting doctors at the moment. My feeling is that he will retire unfortunately. Sad way to finish your career but I can understand maybe he's had a lot of head knocks but doesn't show it because that's the sort of player he is , no fuss just get on with the job.

Cripps wasnt anything special back then though.. I was like WTF when we traded for him.. can see why now, I suppose thats why im on bigfooty and not in a coaches box haha.

Really hoping we can shut the crowd up early - and then keep the foot down. Rabid domain crowds are certain football death.
The sound of unwarranted boos, caviar munching, chardonnay sipping and knitting needles strike fear. Roll on 2018 and a proper crowd.

The Saints can win if our forwards Bruce , Mcartin and Membrey can take hold their marks , kick straight and of course if our midfield can get the ball to them

Hahaha, too right - Burswood is much too far from Claremont quarter!

Last 3 meets, 103, 95 and 53 point losses. Progressively getting worse lol.

And in the last 2 scored 29 and 32, Getting worse. some may say I'm a dreamer but if we reverse those trends and just show we have improved then I'll take it. (Yes I'm grasping at straws for any positive in getting thumped)
