Essendon: The Bombers struggled to get going against the Giants, trailing at every break before losing by 4 goals in a disappointing performance despite a recent run of good form. Sam Durham was a standout on the wing with 23 disposals whilst small forward Matthew Guelfi kicked a career high 4 goals inside 50.

Port Adelaide: Port had a tough time of it against Richmond, losing 3 of the 4 quarters (the one they won was by a point) as they went away with a 38 point loss. Captain Ollie Wines was his prolific best with 32 disposals and 4 clearances whilst key forward/rucks Charlie Dixon and Jeremy Finlayson kicked 2 goals apiece.

Head to Head (last 5)

Port Adelaide defence vs Essendon forward line

So far Essendon have kicked a goal 22.36% of the time it enters their forward 50, 13th in the AFL. Port Adelaide concede a goal 21.57% of the time it enters their defensive 50, currently 3rd in the AFL. The main attraction will be between star forward for Essendon Peter Wright having a career best year, on the verge of kicking 50 goals for the first time and last year's AA CHB in Aliir Aliir, with Wright struggling the first time they met this year. However young tall Harry Jones will also be there for the Dons and will have an interesting match up with Tom Clurey, whilst Darcy Byrne-Jones likely gets matched on tricky small Jye Menzie.

Midfield/rucks battle

Port have been good in the middle for the most part this season, being 4th for clearance difference and 10th for contested possession difference, whilst Essendon have been sort of mid table for the most part, being 12th in both of those stats. Essendon's inside brigade will be lead by Darcy Parish, who is admittedly returning from injury, with support coming from Zach Merrett and Ben Hobbs in particular, whilst Port will be looking to captain Ollie Wines along with Connor Rozee to lead the middle, the latter having a career best year and in line for All Australian honours. On the outside, it should be a reasonably exciting match-up between Sam Duham and Nic Martin for Essendon against Karl Amon and Miles Bergman from Port. Rucks wise, expect Sam Draper to be the stronger ruck of the head-to-head, with the possibility of Nick Bryan supporting him against Sam Hayes and probably Charlie Dixon

Port Adelaide forward line vs Essendon defence

Port have had a trouble scoring this year, kicking a goal 21.31% of the time it enters their forward 50, 17th in the AFL. Essendon's defence has been very leaky, conceding a goal 25.09% of the time it enters defensive 50, which is 16th in the AFL currently. Big key forward Charlie Dixon will be pivotal, kicking 8 goals the last 3 games he's played Essendon and South Australian tall defender Brandon Zerk-Thatcher will be hoping to be able to quell Port's focal point, whilst Todd Marshall is having a career best year with 39 goals so far, likely leader in Essendon's Best and Fairest Jayden Laverde probably the man for the job here.

X-Factor Player

Jase Burgoyne has averaged 14 touches a game when not being used as sub and has started showing some of his father's class.

Key stat

Essendon: Goals/inside 50 conceded. Need to stop Port's underperforming forward line to win here.

Port Adelaide: Clearances. Of the Bombers 7 wins, only 2 have they trailed in clearances, and Port's biggest strength is their clearance game

Tip

We always struggle against Port but this is the first time since 2019 that we've played them at home so I'm feeling oddly confident. Essendon by 22

No one really put their hand up in the vfl. I’d give menzie a proper chance though. Dead rubber, not much to lose.
Voss as well. He was not great but his work rate and effort was there.
I would be parking Shiel and Caldwell. No real point bringing them back.

I would be treating the last two game with importance. What do we want next year to be. A bit like how we finish games is like how we play our next.
Select on merit. Phillips & Shield in for Jones and Snelling (both need to find form). Play Hep HFF, he still has his marking and is ok kicking at goal.
McGrath disposal efficiency has been an issue in recent games also. Play Massimo off HB nd McGrath to the wing

Agree with this - people saying why bring back Shiel or Caldwell not sure what they are thinking..we bought Parish straight back in… We should be hoping to finish the season strongly and winning our last 2 games - particularly the last game against Richmond it would be great to mess up their finals run..

I agree with others, use the last couple of rounds to try out some other players like Voss, Menzie and McDonough. Give Jones a rest in the 2s, and let Hind have a break for a couple of rounds to get some touch back, we know where we're at with these players so nothing wrong with letting them run around in the 2s for a bit.

And of course give Hurley a game in the last round. Fire up the team and beat Richmond in that round and hopefully knock them out of the 8.

Don't want to knock Richmond out if that means the Scumbags Blues stay in

This is a loss that needs to happen.

Play all the kids, give Voss a run, give Menzie a full game. Massimo in.

If we aren't playing all youth and rebuilding then it may be the end of me.

Likely ins... straight back in - Shiel, Caldwell, Smith. Please. spare me.

I feel like we have been “trying” things the last two weeks anyway. The biggest ones being Stewart up forward and different midfield setups (albeit through injury).

So I’m happy to try some more experiments, but I will facepalm the lot of you if people whinge about not seeing Rutten’s plan for the future, whilst we are experimenting, like a loss even matters right now.

I have to agree. If we’re not putting games into the kids what are we doing? Exception is Caldwell, he’s still a kid.

i thought Stewart was already a forward and we had just been trying him back

the old 2 card trick

nil - nil?

Rather than have the teams play they should let one champion from each team fight it out to make it more interesting. Let's say Koch and Truck, who can go toe to toe UFC style, and the loser has to leave football forever.

I'd be confident Truck would still be coaching next year, however he may have some permanent scars as Koch looks like the type that would scratch and bite.

On a side note I'd be curious to see how Eth would write the preview for this...
