Well l am hoping that in the VFL praccy match that some of these young guys put up there hand up for selection against GWS.
Unfortunately three rounds in, and we cannot carry players who just aren't performing. WHE and Thomas in particular, are really battling, and l would like to see some youth injected into the side, for a point of difference and to give some spark.
I would even move on from Mayne, and let a kid play 10 to 15 games this year. Mayne has been a good servant the past few years, but l think we need to blood some young talent. We are seeing with quite a few other sides, how first year players are coming in and making an impact.
If Ruscoe and Henry have their hands held highest in terms of AFL readiness, we're going to have to be patient. We're so shallow that kids will get chances this year and if they perform well enough, they will keep their place.

I would be very surprised if he gets a game next week. If he is selected, then we need to be asking serious questions.
Gathering six disposals and then dropping that mark in the last quarter, surely won't get you another game.

I can’t recall WHE ever being dropped. But I think the time has come. Loved him at his skilful one-touch best, his sticky hands and elegant marks, but those skills and his confidence seem to have evaporated.

I was a fan of his in the earlier days, but I've come to see that nothing good ever comes of it when he has possession.

It’s amazing to witness the divergence in the trajectories of his career vs Daicos.

Early on he looked much more promising, but he has never actually improved. Whereas Daicos has improved out of sight.

Game 50 Callum is pretty much the same footballer as game 1 Callum.

I actually thought him a much better player in his first year than he appears to be now.

It's early days yet but I fear Sidey might go the way of one A. Didak. Sometimes they gradually go down hill and sometimes they fall off a cliff..... and you usually don't see the cliff coming. Pendles was horrid in week 1, better but still uncharacteristic errors in week 2 but back close to his best last night. Let's hope that's the trending we see from Sidey. His run is still there but his skills are letting him down.
I thought Sidey was playing the wrong position last night. I feel he was too deep and couldn't use his strengths of composure and setting up inside 50 entries. He is best when he starts behind centre and helps build by disecting opposition with time and creating space and releasing our mids.

It's a pretty strong argument against the "just play the kids" mantra. To me, Callum played too much too early to the point that his confidence is completely shot when he has the ball in his hands. Needs a decent stint of VFL where he can build some confidence in his disposal.

Agree. I do think his brother will be ok with another 20 or 30 games.

I actually felt sorry for Pendlebury he was trying to marshal the troops but we don't seem to have thinking players. Senior players really let us down but not sure what choices we have given the mess the club has made with salary cap and drafting.

I am so over players starting like a train on fire (Thomas) then disappearing. I actually thought I would have to take my opinion of him back at that stage.
Sidebottom, not sure where he is at. Dropped marks at critical points of the game.

I was already at ease knowing we are not a top 4 side but last night really hurts,. Where was the leadership of our senior players?

Not much a coach can do in the box at that stage of a game.
Unfortunately we don't have many experienced smart leaders. Pendles, Howe & Sidey and then it's getting thin for smarts. Adams tries his hardest but suffers from premature execution and don't get me started on Grundy's lack of footy smarts. Even though Mayne is starting to struggle we absolutely need his voice on field over a young player that hasn't even played a VFL game yet. Good teams have several veterans that are capable of rallying and organising the troops.

Having said that I don't understand why we haven't prepared drafties after 1-2 years in the system to play more than 10min before blowing up. Where is Rantall and how long will it be before we can build endurance into Macrae Reef, etc.

I disagree. Sort of...

At least we know the footballer he is now. At the level. He is a known quantity.

The question now for the coaches is whether that kind of output justifies selection.

Unfortunately I think as a club we settle too easily for the known when making selection decisions. There is little appetite for risk in our risk v reward equations.

I think he’s saying - it’s very hard to capitalize on hit outs.
Yesterday I posted a 3 year analysis showing Gawn at 20% hit outs to advantage, was Ranked 1 and Grundy Ranked 2 with 16%.
Therefore the best Ruckman can’t give his team a first use advantage from his tap outs 80% of the time.
The same analysis however showed why Grundy is more valuable than just being a Ruckman, based on a number of other stats.
So the $7mil questions is why persist with our current set-up. Gawn & Grundy (1&2) and both teams aren't contenders. Is it better to load up with better, faster, more skilful mids that are capable of out smarting the opposition, winning a ball and getting more quality 1st use with a lesser Cameron in the Ruck?

In an ideal world it would be great to have Grundy, Tarranto, Dusty, Bont but unfortunately the Salary cap prevents that and so money needs to spent more wisely. Next year hopefully we have some cash to splash (outs Treloar, Stevo, Phillips) but my concern is the beginning of the end for Pendles & Sidey so we will only be replacing the loss thats coming.

Steele Sidebottom..
9 Clangers!
4
Frees against.
54% Disposal efficiency.
8 Turnovers
1 tackle
Kicks efficiency of 31%.
He is not the elite ball user commentators have been spruiking for years!!
He can't handle a hard tag
Gets blind on scotch during the season, ignores Covid rules, walks naked in the streets..

And we get rid of Treloar...
Steele doesn't cop flak anywhere near what he deserves for his performances. He is the antithesis of CBrown.

WHE
6 Disposals
3 Clangers
1 Tackle
66% disposal efficiency
3 turnovers
Dropped marks.

And we get rid of Stephenson.

Madgen
A Defender, who registered ZERO tackles..
Pretty much the same as Murphy yesterday!!!

C Brown
At least Callum had 6 tackles.. He is the new Blair (without the premiership).

I'm really proud of how we played last night. We maintained our attacking intent from last week.

We couldn't execute that for long enough. But you have to credit Brisbane for being a tough outfit and you're not always going to have it on your terms. When they came at us we responded in the face of their momentum. Until we lacked composure on our last play and it cost us.

We're playing better than I'd hoped given our off season which destroyed much of our playing depth. I enjoy our playing style much more than last season.

Virtually every one here thought at the start of the season we would miss the 8 or finish 6-10.
So why are we bagging, players, the game plan, the Coach?

Surely we played well above expectations and showed we are more than capable, and in fact could have beaten one of the Flag favourites.
Isn’t that a huge positive?

People should therefore (given their pre-season expectations) , not be outraged.
Brisbane were ripe for the picking considering the circumstances.

Round one was possibly the worst he has ever played for Collingwoood. Round 2 he was good against weaker opposition, but regressed again on Thursday.

19 games to go.................................to freedom!!!!!!

19 games to go to what Doc? The end of Buckley? Is that the magic bullet, no Buckley?

So who replaces him Clarko, Mitchell? What is the carrot that would make them wanna coach here? Where's the incentive?

Look I'm not defending Buckley one iota, but if you're suggesting Nathan's exit will magically make everything right and the next coach takes us to flag then you're sadly mistaken.

In short, it looks likely that the light at the end of the tunnel right now is very very dim and we've just thrown another window out the window. We need to accept that.

Hope like hell that our game is developed differently and luck falls our way - coz we ain't winnin solely on our say so, that's all we got.

Exactly, and the club isn't doing him any favours by continually playing him at AFL level, where his confidence is getting smashed as each week goes on. He needs a decent run at VFL level, just to get his confidence back.

Forgot the spoon in 1999 to 2002? It can turnaround quickly under a new coach who knows what they're doing.
Pies have been treading water since 2018 and Buckley is out of ideas, it's obvious when Mayne is a best 22 lock each week.
