didn't watch it due to 21st (can't wait to watch replay), but seems good we came out of it with a win, everitt seems to be the match winner, been reading and it seems there was a disallowed goal or something by Goodesy?

Goodes kicked a goal but the goal umpire said it went on the other side of the post. Replays confirm that it was a goal though.

But he turned the match? I think it was a great choice.

Agreed. But I gotta say if they played him in a similar role each week he would do that for 2/3 quarters. It's a good role for him at the moment though. They're finding it hard to slot him into a regular position and he's had to cover off Mal and Tadhg down back but the kid is an attacking player, not defensive. I was rapt when he came on last night because I knew he'd finally get a chance to be on the ball. He creates things and he needs to be in the middle/forward. It's all a learning experience (playing down back) but i'm sure in 2/3 years he will be a dynamo out of the middle and up front. He's hungry when you put him around the ball. The only other game where he had extended time up front was against Essendon last year and he kicked 3 and was our leading scorer along with Jesse. I just hope down the track he doesn't get stuck off half back. He is too dynamic. He'll win many games for us this kid. Finally after all the talk he gets, when he got a real chance last night he showed everyone what he is capable of. Well done Gaz!

Very poor skills again this week. I noted last week if that continues it will eventually hurt us against the good sides.

This is ultimately why our defense looked poor at times, pretty hard to defend a ball coming in so easily.

Not sure how people are judging players, but although Grundy had some terrible decisions/skills tonight, he was on Kennedy for most of the night who only kicked 1 goal and 6 marks and did not have a big influence on the game.

I thought Johnson's debut was very impressive. Started the game pretty tentative but got better as it wore on. I loved his intensity at the contest. Pretty athletic, has good closing speed and did not look out of place. Will be a player.

Plenty of good players who did their jobs, but way way way way too many turn overs. We are not going to be able to keep that up if we want to keep winning football matches.

Good to see nobody getting to carried away yet. We're unbeaten but our 3 games have been against 3 non-finals sides from last year (as improved as all 3 of them may be).

The next 6 weeks could really set up our year. 4 of our next 5 are at the SCG and the other is at Manuka against the Dogs. We have seemingly tougher opponents over the next 5 games in Geelong, Carlton, Bulldogs, Port and Hawthorn. If we can find at least 3 wins in there somewhere our year is off to a great start.

Mase - sometimes I wonder if other Clubs feel the same way about their team but gee we seem to work so hard for some of our goals but we always tend to gift our opposition goals. Maybe i've got the blinkers on but it seems like such a Sydney Swans trait.

Gary Rohan's performance as the substitute was outstanding. Almost a match winning performance TBH. Constant movement, blinding pace and strong inside 50 in regards to his tackling and marking.

He is the kind of player who can perform the sub role perfectly, though I'd like to see him play full games. Not surprised he was made a sub at Subiaco though, the big ground really does suit him and against tiring bodies he was just fantastic.

AFL Game Day is on 7Mate (Syd) or normal 7 (Melb) at 10am. There should be a lot to talk about from this game, not least Goodes's goal adjudged to be a behind.
Well they spent more time on it than I expected (a minute) around 3-4 but they didn't mention the Goodes incident at all.

How will they manage him for next week? Both our subs in Rounds 1 and 2, Seaby and Meredith, were dropped the following week with the excuse that they needed careful management with their game time. I guess the other option up their sleeve is that they could keep Rohan as the sub in Round 4 as West Coast have been doing with Gaff for 3 weeks.

For sure. The sub has created yet another level of nuance in our great game, and whether this was intentional or not by the powers that be is immaterial now. Rohan is, for the moment, a near "perfect" sub, because of his ability to play anywhere on the field. Clubs will have seen what he did last night and be making notes. His speed was decisive, his attack on the ball as others around him showed serious signs of fatigue was noticeable, and his defense in attack made the difference. It was interesting to note that WC seemed to bring their sub on at exactly the same time. The sub is an injury measure, but at a certain point in the match (decided by the tactics of the coach) the sub suddenly turns into a weapon. I think, despite all the negative hoopla, the AFL have pretty much got it right with the sub.

Came on a earlier and probably ran harder and longer compared to the other two. He should be good to go next week.
That is very true. The two marks he took against his man, I think it was Schofield, he just seemed to get to the fall of the ball quicker and Schofield was labouring. I'd prefer it if he stays up forward, I'm not very comfortable with the idea of him playing down back as he is still raw and prone to making mistakes.

Put him in the forward line, make him chase and tackle like we know he loves to do, and he has shown that he can take a good mark and can kick goals from set shots.

Still amazed at Smith's goal (1:07). He launched it from 55 and it cleared the goalline! I didn't know he could kick it that well. Just had another look, doesn't look like your typical drop punt, did he go for the torp?

I'd also love to see Rohan up forward more often but a few things seem to be conspiring against that happening. The injuries we have to Tadhg and Malceski I think have forced Horse somewhat to get some more pace down back to compensate for them not being there and also I reckon the coaches want to make sure Rohan's defensive game is as solid as possible before they let him be the offensive beast that we all hope he will become. Good learning curve I think.

But up forward is where he is most valuable to us atm, I agree. Almost more for his chasing and tackling than anything else.

Once Tadhg, LRT and Mal are back in it will be very interesting to see what Horse does with Everitt and Rohan.

And on Smith, he didn't hit it perfectly but sometimes the mongrel ponts go even further than a typical, well hit drop punt. Something about how they float in the air that makes them go a touch longer. In any case, Smith was awesome last night. Quickly becoming one of my favourites in the side.

we are saying the same thing about ourselves from last night

well played sydney - well played goodes and the supersub. look forward to the next one. hopefully with lecras and waters back. another heart attack sydney game. may there be many more (except it would be nice to win the next one - you guys have had it all your own way for a bit long now)

Well done to the Swannies last night. The tackling pressure your lot continue to put on is bloody amazing.

To good for us, good luck for the rest of the season. :thumbsu: :)

Just looking through those highlights, can anyone kick a drop punt? From either team? Nearly every kick on that seemed to be some variation of the floater.

Tbh the only things i can take for the past three games is we didn't lose them, we've got a hell of a lot of improvement skill wise especially kicking and we still have key personnel to come back.

Not really happy with the quality we've played with. Can do much much better

People have been a bit harsh on Grundy I feel. While his ball use was absolutely terrible, he did a very good defensive job on Kennedy, restricting the dangerous CHF to just 10 possessions, 1 goal and zero impact. His first job is to negate his opponent, if he's doing that, he'll keep his place.

I was very pleased with White's efforts. He had a lot more physical presence than he usually does. Still didn't take a contested mark, but he led strongly and won a free in a contested situation. Definitely a step in the right direction.

How good is Smith? Love him. Love him love him love him.

Good to see Jack and Kennedy really hit their straps. They started a bit slow this year, but they were in top form.

Jarred McVeigh should hang his head in shame. One of the worst efforts ever by a player in a milestone game. Great win by the boys despite him.

And yet he gets listed in the Sunday Herald Sun best, and actually gets a heckin'g vote in the 5-4-3-2-1.

What a leader. He gets lost in defence in the third quarter when one Weagle was unmarked 35m out in front, then starts pointing and remonstrating at (I think) O'Keefe or whoever it was who had to come off his man and try and get to the Weagles player.

Surely Jude Bolton is more deserving of the captain's tag, even if it's only a token gesture.

Goodes showed what a captain does, and in that last quarter, what about the efforts of Mattner, Mumford, Rohan, Smith, Everitt and co.

Mumford was mostly beaten all night, but was huge in the last term, and Mattner ... his kicking still gives me the shakes but gosh-darn he's brave.

Even young Johnston never stopped trying, and at least tried to impose himself physically. A string, still-growing teenager ...

Oh, and one more comment: has anyone yet praised Jesse White for his slick hands? He might be slo-o-o-wly developing as a key forward but his athleticism and quick hands are also very important.

It was a very good win under the circumstances, and so much improvement to come.
