I know I'll get shot for saying this, but I don't think we'll make too many changes.

I think Macca is well known for being an educating, teaching style coach, so he'll be trying to encourage others, rather than mass sackings/droppings at this stage.

He needs to work on lifting a few players confidence, as it was clearly getting worse and worse as the night progressed.

A lot of people have talked about dropping Grant, but I felt that at least he's been more physical in the past fortnight, he's put his body in and laid some tackles, he just needs to do more of it and be more careful with his decision making, then I'll think he'll have more of an impact. I think his confidence is a bit fragile at the minute. I think this is where Macca's teaching skills will be put to the test. Cooney also needs to be told not to rush everything so much. He has repeatedly tried the impossible quick kick off a single step this year and put it out on the full...

If you ran through the weekends game, here is the list of players who shouldn't be dropped, based upon effort and performance (and to a lesser extent, previous credits and the role they have to play).

FB: ?? ?? ??
HB: Murphy Markovic ??
C: Picken Boyd Griffen
HF: Dahl Jones ??
F: Cooney ?? ??
R: ?? Libba Smith

I: Addison, Cross, DJ, Cordy

I'm probably being a bit generous here with some.

That's 8 positions we need to fill somehow, with Howard, Tutt, Morris, Williams out injured, and Lake to be suspended.

I think we need to try and change things up slightly, within the squad.

FB: Hargrave Markovic Addison
HB: Murphy Talia Picken
C: Wood Boyd Griffen
HF: Dahl Jones Gia
F: DJ Grant Cooney
R: Minson Libba Smith
I: Cross Cordy JJ
S: ???

I'm sure I've forgotten someone, but someone will pick it up.

Out: Lake (stupidity), Higgins, Roughead (rest)
In: Talia, JJ, someone else (Wallis - sub ?)

As you can see, we have a few issues we need to resolve. Just my 2c

Have to get rid of a ruck. Liked Cordy's effort, but his marks weren't sticking, and there was absolutely no support for him. So either Minson or Roughead gone.
Have to add another running midfielder, possibly 2 or 3, outrun all day. Djerkurra looked good, prepared to carry the ball.

Have to find something up forward, more options. I do like Jones, and Cordy looked OK, but FFS (with Dahlhaus playing further afield) that was utterly *it* and the Saints paid it zero respect.

Have to add some grunt in the midfield. Lake's out, obviously.
Didn't think Hargraves was all that much of an issue either way.

Higgins 50/50, did some good things, but execution was poor.

What id like to see
Out- Lake(susp) Addison( not really bad but not creative enough)and one of Wood/Hargrave, one of Gia/Higgins, Roughhead(team balance)

In- Talia (To replace Lake), Pearce (replace Wood?Hargrave), JJ promoted (for Addison), Sherman ( replace Gia/Higgins) Tom Hill (would prefer Panos but he has played 1 game in three weeks)

What will probably Happen
Out Lake
In Dickson, Cordy to play down back.

This is what the sort of team I'd love to see towards the end of the year:

Wood, Lake, Morris
Howard, Markovic, Murphy
Sherman, Boyd, Smith/Wallis
Cooney, Jones, Dal
Cordy, T.Hill/Panos, Dickson

Minson/Roughy, Griffen, Picken

Tutt, Grant/Higgins, Libba | DJ

Meaning Hargrave, Gia, Cross who don't get me wrong have been superb servants for this club but it'll be time for the younger generation.

Gotta love big footy.
(should be Minson. Also wont happen but for those who think he will make it good luck, anyone who gets pants in a game like he did by Wayde Skipper in last years VFL grand final and then can be number 1 ruck in the AFL is being Delusional)

This is the most enlightened comment that I have seen on BF in the last 5 years.

anyone that says in talia hasn't seen willy play.. i'll eat my words if he dominates if he comes in, but he plays more of a 3rd defender/hb flanker so can pad his stats. His kick is ok but not afl level yet.

I'm not denying his promise, looks a gun, for an 18? (not sure on the age) project key defender, but he is not ready to match it w/ the big boys of the afl yet

Lake's 5 year good record has brought a 2 match suspension down to 1, with an early guilty plea. Pretty good news, I suppose.

Brian Lake's 5-year good record, and an early plea, brings his ban down from 2 games to 1, while Goodes' poor record prevents a reduction.

out:Lake (suspended),Hargrave(lazy & unaccountable)Gia (no genuine attack on ball ) Higgins (soft & over rated )
In:Austin , Talia , Vespremi , Sherman

Warnings to : Wood , Cross both for their poor disposal

  • Play Grant at half back and Murphy at Centre Half forward
  • Forwards to lead to space on the angle and
  • All players must keep running the angles to provide targets

Hargrave has been one of our best of a bad lot???

Grant isn't up to it, lets face it, he'd be no good off halfback either

WTF was someone calling to drop Minson, r u ******* serious????????? Do you actually understand footy let alone watch it?????????

Out: Roughead, Grant, DJ

In: Hill, Austin, Wallis

Play Murphy forward, Gia deep with Dalhaus. Jone and Hill as talls and bring Dickson in if hes fit?

Melbourne only have one tall forward in M.Clark so Markovic gets him then they have 5 medium sized forwards. (higgins, Wood, Hargrave, Picken, Addison) get them. Send picken back to play on best small forward (melbourne dont really have many so maybe could be played as a small forward).

Get Griffen onball with Boyd and Cooney. Not sure if this has been eventuating enough? Have Cross and Libba on wings.

C.Smith, Wallis rotate off bench.

Out - Smith, Lake, cross

In - Wallis, Sherman, Veszpremi

Wallis as the sub. Allow Djekuerra a chance to play a full game. Play Ayce cordy in defence on their resting ruckman. Vez and Sherman as half forwards. Grant out of the goalsquare. Jones as chf. MAKE SURE TO HONOUR A LEAD. Don't bomb the ball blindly into a packed forward line and chip it around if you have to before an option presents itself.

My arguments for this - Wallis is a better option than Smith at the moment. Vez and Sherman add much needed pace and creativity. I think cross doesn't add much to the team at the moment. We don't really need to replace Lake given Melbournes forward line doesn't really demand 2 key defenders. I think Ayce could do a job for us down back.

Is anyone else getting concerned with Smith's kicking? God he goes in hard and has a massive crack and can get the footy that is clear, but he has turned over some absolute clangers last 2 weeks when not under pressure. That might be a reason why he was still there at pick 17.

I think give him a spell, there has been too much hype, a week in the 2's will be good and if he plays well bring him back. Wallis BOG in the 2's so deserves a chance.

Would love to DazB86's changes but unlikely. Austin maybe a chance to cover Lake.

No, because it's only his 3rd game. No concern at all. If it goes on for years, probably.

Just might not be injured.

Might have scored a date with a chick, might have won lotto, might have cooked a nice chook

But judging by that tweet - something good happened to Jason Tutt this afternoon and it inspired him to tweet it on twitter

read into whatever you want

Post it in the gossip thread then?

Nothing about a Tutt injury in the weekly medical room video, so hopefully that is the good news.

He finished last year well and like Clay Smith was very unlucky not to get a Rising Star nomination in a 4 goal debut game

And he is quick

Those weekly medical updates are a nice try by the club, but as usual supporters don't get a lot of love in the injury news department.

Tutt went off in the game last week, was cramping up so maybe it was a precaution only.

Will be an interesting selection of this team this week. Lake is out. So there is one change.

I think the selectors will stick pretty much with the same team, but I think Wallis will come in. Amazingly, Sherman was named best for Willi....once again I must have watched a different game.

Talia was pretty good and I would give him his first game. I think Smith and Liberatore will be in the mix to be dropped.

If Sherman converted a couple more of those shots then he would have been in the best for me. Did a lot of stuff that we never see from him and set up a lot of shots at goal.

Still, Wallis was outright best out there in my opinion and I would love for the club to put in a three weeks seniors, three weeks VFL schedule with him and Smith. It would help both find form while getting Smith more comfortable at AFL level.

The guy i think everyone is looking past and i will get shot for this, but gia i think needs to be dropped and cop a wake up call all he has seem to have done for the 1st 3 rounds is play for free kicks when the ball comes in and when he doesn't gwet them he sulks and doesn't chase, i'm not normally a gia basher always used to be one of my favourite players but has been terrible in the 1st 3 games.

my line up for this week would be

OUT: Gia(wake up call), Roughead(unlucky but need more agile big men if going with 3), Smith(needs a rest and confidence boost in vfl), Lake(susp)
IN: Hill, Sherman, Wallis, Dickson

B: Wood Markovic Addison
HB: Murphy Hargrave Higgins
C:picken Boyd Sherman
HF: Grant Jones Cooney
F: Dalhaus Hill Cordy
FOLL: Minson Griffen Libatore
INT: Cross Wallis Djerrkura Sub: Dickson

Reasons: with cordy Roughead and minson we are just too slow up forward when it hits the ground, Hill can run has some pace and can provide pressure, Sherman adds much needed pace missed opptunities in the vfl kicking 1.5 but would rather a forward having 6 shots than not getting the ball like our forwards are atm, Wallis was very good for willi and worked hard running the when he didn't have the ball, Dickson played a good half and came off at halftime at the willi game and headed to eithad so may be close.

I agree with your selections and whilst I think Roughie is stiff to go (very unlucky because I thought he played one of his better games against the Saints) I think team balance requires it. I would make one more change however, I would drop Hargrave and replace him with Panos, he can play back & forward (like Hill) and is a good user of the ball.

Tutt posted on his twitter "great to have good news", as he was taken off the game last week and doesnt appear on the injury list that must mean his scans have come back giving him the all clear.
