Did what we had to do. Didn't pay a lot of respect to our opponents at stoppages, and it showed on occassions.

I'll back him in, but that was the first time in a while I felt like Richy was off the pace. Mark it down as just having a bit of a mare, and hope it's not a sign of the inevitable hill.

We struggle when the game gets really open and the ball is pinging from one end to another. That's what it felt like for large periods of the first half. Much better playing tempo footy, with sparks of speed from the usual suspects, and deeper F50 entries.

Good to bank an away win, and know that we have more levels we can go to. But, despite our start to the year, I'd like to see that high level a bit more consistently. I have a nagging feeling that we are one good mid short.

Solid without being spectacular.
I said a few weeks ago Rich was struggling this season so I don't think u can just mark this game down as a mare. Perhaps he is carrying something which has resulted in his skinfolds visibly increase.

I would keep Payne, seems like he has limited confidence - he needs to accept that he can impose himself with his athleticism and big frame.

I like Prior’s capacity to run to spots to help the ball transition from defence although he often takes too long to move the ball along by foot.

Having said that I would love to see Dev’s grunt in the team. Very tough team to get into at the moment, good position to be in. Will be interesting as to how they bring both McStay and Daniher back in let alone fringe midfielders.

Yea, Payne is another case with a big forward who is work in progress. Keep playing him until the injured pair return so he can learn the forward craft some more.

Really average disappointing win for mine. We're so lazy. We get 4 goals up and there's no desperation, there's a someone else will do it effort that creeps in. They were way better than their position suggests but still.....we should murder them.
As for the individuals. Thank god for Darcy Fort, turned the tide for us out of the center. He's our number 1 ruck by a long way, Big O seems very ineffective. Great to see Hippy out there, he'll be ok. The back line kept us in it yet again. Adams, Starce, Noah, Darcy all good.

A few years ago when we started winning it was done on adrenaline. There were epic Games where we played out of our skin, it was exciting and the players were euphoric after the win.

It was often followed by a flat performance and a loss, which is a sign of an immature team. As is not being able to maintain intensity during a finals campaign.

Managing emotions is the last and usually the biggest step to becoming an elite athlete.

We knew that to win the cup we needed to turn winning home and away games into humdrum, routine, emotional meh, we got this. And to save the intensity till the finals.

Last night was meh, we got this from the boys. In the second quarter when Adelaide bought their immature emotionally intensity and spent their last dollar, our team knew that it would burn out so they played through and then pounced.

Now we are here. We should be celebrating the workmanship way our team are going about ticking off the boxes that are necessary to tick off before we play the real games this year.

We are ready for finals baby!!!

Definitely agree. I think noble even said a couple of years ago the next stage of development for this team is winning without needing an emotional charge. Mechanical winning almost. I think we're there now and it helps massively with the stamina of the team as a whole across the season. 8-1 seems like we are going ok to me...

That's a good point. We need to bring intensity every week in his competition but we know now that the intensity required in finals ratches up a notch. Great teams that have generational success are supreme at putting away games that they really should win without overly exerting themselves.

As a Fitzroy supporter it was eternally frustrating to play out of our skins and be more than competitive but to see the game taken away from us by a Hawthorn or a Carlton with precision and class for half a quarter or so that we just couldn't match. It made you think you were a lot closer to being a good team than you ever were.

I think we're starting to show that and the bloke who keeps having a sook that we're not pummelling these teams doesn't understand how the best teams handle it week to week throughout a long season.

Best goal of the game - Zorko going for a full body, handball-to-Lachie fake. Which Lachie played along with beautifully by moving like he had received the ball.
.
The three defenders bought it and covered Lachie. By the time their brains registered Lachie did not have the ball, Zorko had leisurely rotated 180 and slotted the goal.

Sublime maturity from two legends.

Only one team out of 18 wins the flag each year. If that is your only measurement of success as a fan then you are going to be mathematically miserable on average 94.4 percent of the time.

Considering what a national joke we were 5-6 years ago, I worry about the inability of some people to derive some measure of satisfaction and happiness from us being, at the least, a very good football team.

Those people might need to consider if supporting a football team is the best thing for their health and well-being.

With Payne he is here to fill in Joe/McStay role.
Someone to kick to up the wings for a contest and someone to crash the pack and bring the ball to ground.
I think he doing ok in both.
Other option is Fullarton where I say the two things above not his strong point.
Fullarton is a great link player and very agile to get ground balls. I still think of him as a super tall flanker who we can use in the Ruck.

Enjoyed the professional win and the dealing with the momentum the opposition had during the second quarter.

Weirdly enough the commentary didn't worry as much last night as I don't expect Mark et al to be remotely objective (kind of like how we would like to hear Lynch or Browny being a bit more Lions-y in their commentary).

The Crows are on a far better track than the Kangas.

Can we ban Robbo from ever giving our players the subconscious message that hitting to post is a good and rewarding act?

I thought he had an interrupted pre-season, so it makes sense that he's not on fire at the moment.

Zorko's accuracy so far this year is his 3rd best of his career. 50% so far this year. 51% 2018 and 52.3 2016 50% also 2012

Also he has found his touch and confidence again after his accuracy of the last two year being absolutely horrid (37.8% 2021 and 28.1% 2020)

The two goals that made me go wow last night were that one and Kiddy's absolute bomb around the corner.

Good Stuff!

I don't think the margin did them justice but I was really happy to bank the win and get a few passages of play for the highlight reel.

If we had every player playing at their best in a game we'd win by 20 goals . Realistically it's inevitable that you have a few players down or unable to get into the game in every match but as long as they contribute something when it's their turn to go is the best you can expect . Errors/mistakes obviously always occur. We handled it fairly well with two of our best key forwards out and the other off a 12 month layoff.

Well very interesting? Hard to satisfy!
You put Fort over O now your just kidding. I know who I would run out with.

Payne's big issue in playing the role is not knowing enough to fight through contact and just lay a body if it's a two on one. He's got a big strong body - he should be able to impact the contest even in that situation, but he seems to get distracted by his direct opponent bumping his line.

We're just lucky that Daniher wasn't out there, otherwise there'd be 30 posts about his failure to kick and tackle more than Adelaide on his ownsome.

Agreed 5 years ago I thought we were on the Fitzroy train to irrelevancy and relocation/merger or whatever.I am more than happy to take a workmanlike win where the players just get the job done and move on to greater challenges.

I'm not saying Payne won't make a forward but for the time being he doesn't know the rudiments of forward play apart from getting his body in the way in a one on one. Anything more complicated and he looks a bit lost.

I'd like another look at Fullarton in that role because he'd lead up a lot more but they both have different skill sets and it depends on what we think we're missing at the moment.

As bad as we were North and West Coast are worse than we ever were if you look at percentage comparisons. IMO the Eagles are in a particularly dire position, their best players are all aging, Kennedy, Hurn turn 35, Nic Nat, Shuey 33, McGovern, Darling, Gaff 31 next season.

Big O's ruck game has gone backwards. Fort got us going in the third quarter, he was the catalyst to our better play later in the game. He gives us drive and pressure around the ball. I'm a bit worried about Oscar.

Question is whether Fort is good because he comes in when the others are fatigued. One thing for sure us that Fort's clearance work when the ball hits the ground is excellent.
