After Essendon won the Flag in 2000 with that freak one loss season, they made a pact NOT to sing their club song for H & A wins in 2001 or any other Finals win except after they won the 2001 GF, which they assumed was their God-given right.

Shock, horror, they not only got rolled by us in the famous "if it bleeds we can kill it" game in Round 10 but we also knocked them off in the GF

So they went through 2001, winning 17 H&A games and two Finals without once singing their club song.

What a load of claptrap that arrogant stance turned out to be.

No wonder Hird gave one of the worst, most sulky and self pitying Loser's speeches of all time after that GF.

Yes, always celebrate your team being good, bellow out the Club song after every win and if the stars align and you win a Flag then go crazy.

My goodness, even if we don't win another Flag in my lifetime, I will be forever grateful for how the club has provided me with so much pride and joy after we rose from the ashes from those dark and depressing years from 2011 through to 2017, where we were an irrelevant laughing stock.

We've gone from being a club where players with big egos wanted out, to a club where the likes of Neale, Cameron ,Daniher and McCarthy wanted in.

And high end draft picks like Rayner, McCluggage, Bailey and J Berry sign up again for at least two years and cast offs like MRobbo, Lyons and Ah Chee become better versions of themselves than they were at their previous clubs. And we have some serious home grown talent like Andrews, Hipwood, Coleman, Payne and our magnificent captain Dane Zorko who couldn't get on an AFL list until we decided he wasn't too short to play at the level.

I sincerely hope we get to the GF this year and win the bloody thing.

If not, we go again.

Go Lions!!!!

To the "cast offs" being better versions of themselves I would also add Linc, Adams & Fort.

I suppose it shouldn't be a surprise given how much work he has probably put into his rehab, but Eric looked really confident in his movement which was good to see.

The telecast spent an inordinate amount of time focusing on J Berry last night which was weird.

Cameraman has a mancrush maybe?

Interesting that Rayner averages 30m gained per kick. Basically rarely kicks it backwards or sideways. Comparing him to Walsh

Average possessions: 13.6 vs 31.8
Contested possessions 6.4 vs 9.5
Clearances 2.2 vs 3
Metres gained 288 vs 317

Lane a strange mid season draft pick before that.
Short memory. At that point our biggest weakness was ruck - Archie was looking likely to be delisted and if Oscar went down we didn't have a replacement. Ultimately we managed to get Fort, but we'd tried and failed to get a backup ruck candidate for several years running at that point.

Also if it's a long term injury in the first half of the season we have the mid season draft to add a McBean or a Ballenden.

Cox was a strange SSP selection though and Lane a strange mid season draft pick before that.
If we didn’t take Lane and Oscar and Fort were injured at the same time we’d be criticising the fact we don’t have enough ruck depth. That’s despite the fact Lane seems to be developing nicely in the twos.

Injuries happen. But you can’t prepare for every possible contingency. As I’ve said, it’s just bad luck that out of the very few injuries we’ve had, they have all affected the one area of the ground. I don’t accept putting that down to poor list management.

He wasn't readymade though. He was a reserves state league ruckman and we have HSmith and Fullarton developing as well

Who would Geelong turn to if Hawkins and Cameron were injured?

Or Richmond if it were Lynch/Riewoldt?
Both clubs have a number of young KPP prospects on their list.

Most clubs have quite a few young developing KPP’s. Very few probably actually make it, but we’re very light on for young KPP’s compared to most other clubs.

But just considering the KPFs, take out the best two from each team:

Brisbane:
Daniher
Hipwood

Richmond:
Lynch
Riewoldt

Geelong:
Hawkins
Cameron

And the rucks:

Brisbane:
McInerney
Fort
Smith
Lane

Richmond:
Nankervis
Soldo
Ryan
Colina

Geelong:
Stanley
Blicavs (though capable of playing ruck, forward, defence)
Ceglar
Conway
Tsapatolis

Leaves the proven back ups (of varying quality):

Brisbane:
McStay

Geelong:
Ratugolea (?better as a ruck)
SDK (?better as a defender)

Richmond:
Balta (?better as a defender)

And those developing + capable of playing KPF (of varying quality):

Brisbane:
Fullarton (?better as a ruck)
Payne (?better as a defender)

Geelong:
??? You could put a couple of those rucks above here at a push.

Richmond:
??? All of Nyoun, Miller, Gibcus look better as defenders.

I don’t think we’re going too badly in terms of KPF cover comparatively.

We'd already seen Fullarton isn't a ruck answer, and for whatever reason Smith seems amazingly focused on playing forward and barely rucking - we can discuss the wisdom of that, but Lane looked better than either in the ruck last year already despite not looking actually that great

Not even short memory, it was a good decision then and probably an even better one now. For a young guy that really came out of nowhere he’s doing pretty well as our number 1 ruck in the VFL.

Yeah longer term he's probably a better prospect in the ruck but a minor upgrade on Fullarton isn't really solving the short term ruck depth issue. Plus it hinders the development of the other 2.

I think we should move heaven and earth to keep McStay. People here know might know my view of Joe but I couldn't stand the idea that we'd see Dan walk because we think that Joe can be the man. When Dan and Joe return in a couple of weeks we're going to be forced to make this difficult decision. If we accept that Oscar is going to ruck then we need a second ruck. I think that's going to have to be Fort(on form). So then we've got Joe, Dan and Eric. Can we really play these three in the same forward line? I don't think so.

So for me, we need to strengthen our mids so in comes Dev and out goes Joe

Either you let your predjiduces over rule your thought processes, or you have no idea about football.

Yeah I don't know why Smith is not doing more rucking. FWIW when he is in the ruck I do think he has some of the best taps.
