I saw someone on the Bombers' board saying Charlie Cameron had never really troubled Essendon too much before, and I thought it was an assertion worth fact checking. Here's Charlie's record for Brisbane against each team, sorted by goal kicking accuracy.

As you can see, not only has Charlie kicked fewer goals against Essendon than anyone other than Sydney, he's also been the least accurate! 53% of shots are goals, down from his Lions career average of 67%. So well done Bomber fan, you were dead right. I'm backing Charlie to set this factoid straight the other way by Sunday morning ;)

(By the way, check out those stats against the Pies and Bulldogs, phwooar)

Thanks for putting together those stats, interesting isn't it. I have a feeling Charlie may get off the chain a bit on Saturday.

I was thinking it might be a day for the big boys with Essendons shortage of genuine talls.

I'd have to go with Cyril over Charlie at this point. The 4 flags have to count for something. Cyril did it on the biggest stage nearly every time.
2015 Grand Final was ridiculous. Had Norm sewn up by half time. Could have sat on the pine for the entire 2nd half and still won it.

I watched Essendon play on the weekend, they don't have much to worry about. Can't see us losing. Play a tough hard home game and we could really put them to the sword. None of this "play it safe in the last qtr" business. Play it out hungry for points.

We could give Gunston a spell and play Fort. Up against Draper n Phillips but I think Big O can handle them. I'd like to see O n Fort play together more, get a good thing going. Will be important come finals time.

I'm hoping the Lester memorial games are done too. Time to get Joyce back in and let those 3 big boys rule the roost. Much better for the team in the long term. OK, let Lester fill in for Rich if we must for a game or 2 more, we know he'll bring his adequate game to the party.

Don't think there will be any changes. Nothing structural like a Fort or Joyce coming in anyway. Maybe a play around with Sharpie, Answerth and the Sub, but nothing major. Hope we really get ruthless for the whole game and make a statement.

Of course not quite edging out Cyril and being legitimately in the discussion as a comparative player to him is far from being an insult!

Jake Kelly is traditionally the sort of match up that Charlie would struggle with, predominately because he tries to play as a marking forward which means the less quick but bigger bodies can bump him and throw him off his game (Charlie led our marks inside 50 in 2021 and 2022). This year we've seen his marks inside 50 numbers stay around the same, but he's now third behind Hipwood and Daniher who are now stepping up as marking options (6th and 8th for total marks inside 50) meaning Cameron can stay down and play to his strengths.

Charlie only has 0.9 marks on the lead this year, which is fewer than he's had since 2017 at Adelaide, and less than half of what he had last year. Conversely his ground ball gets inside 50 are up to 2.9 from 2 last year.

Love these stats, of course its always good to have versatile forwards but have always felt Charlie (and Linc to a lesser extent) wanted to play as marking options too often. Having it as a tool they can use selectively will be way better from a team perspective. I'm guessing the increase of Dani-wood marks inside 50 are due to the absence of McStay.

I think replacing McStay with Gunston has led to our forward line being less congested because Gunston is smarter with his leading patterns and opening up space, which in turn helps Daniher and Hipwood (who are both +1 marks inside 50 each compared to last year).

I don't have any stats to look at with this, but my feeling is that a significant proportion of McStay's marks in the last two or three years would've been taken between wing and the 50m arc.

On Charlie, all i can say is how lucky are we to have in at our great club. I thought he was good at the Crows but he is a marquee player in every sense of the word and is just a mind boggling good player that really don't come around to often. Aker is the only other Lions that has the same impact as Charlie and gets bumbs on seats and reason neutrals watch our games.

I dont think its to much a reach to say that there isnt a player that does what Charlie does to such a level - Toby Greene and Jeremy Cameron maybe but they arent liked universally like our boy Charlie - he is such a unique player and an excitement machine that I really have to tell my kids to savour watching this man play b/c it doesnt happen very often - I've just been lucky to see 2 in my time following Bears a bit of Fitzroy when I was young in the 90s when Dad watched them to and of course Lions.

Remember when we traded for Charlie and screams of over paying were heard?

Worth every cent/lost pick opportunity.

And imagine how good our youngsters feel when THE Charlie Cameron pats them on the back.

Even on a sliding doors assessment in terms of who the crows took in Fogarty.

He is only just emerging now. He’s 23.

We got Cameron at 23. He’s been elite since he came to us. Got injured in 2018. Played 100 games straight so been durable. Seems to be at the peak of his powers now.

In another world where Fogarty stayed out of form, we would've got him the last offseason for a reasonable deal. Imagine that, here's the pick 12 and please give us Charlie Cameron. Fast forward 5 years, "we are here to poach that pick 12 player you took 5 years ago".

He quite literally started to hit his strapped at the exact wrong time for us. Had it been at the end of the season or not at all he would be a Lion right now.

And most importantly we would have unequivocally won the Cameron trade.

I didn’t even know we were trying to get him last year. Would’ve been a damn good pickup.

For many, myself included, it wasn't an idea that we overpaid, it was more a case that 15 would've got the job done.

In hindsight, it was all irrelevant.

Charlie Cameron, Cam Rayner, Zac Bailey, Brandon Starcevich, and Jack Payne makes for a pretty tasty trade & draft haul six years on.
