Surprised that Smith is out - maybe a niggle, who knows. Wonder if Rioli will definately play or if that will be Bruests spot. Would love to see Bailey play but I just cannot see an away game being his first hit out.

Yep, you'd think the bench will be made up of.

Bailey, Lewis, Schoenmakers and Bruest.

Young didn't exactly light up last week, Ladson isn't going to push one of those out, and I'd be surprised if Lisle takes a runners spot.

Although that bench still looks too top heavy.

My thoughts too.

Makes up for the smallest starting 18 ever named in AFL history!!

I'll believe Rioli when I see it, maybe we are going to confuse Shaw when he is forced to take Punky.

Wonder if we will play a tall as sub and play Roughie back? with a view of taking out Bailey and releasing Rough into the ruck.

Mate I am devasted SMITH is out. Devastated.

If we don't take Bailey to battle with Mumford, Roughead will be cooked within a half.

Re: Teams: Hawthorn vs Sydney Sunday 22nd May

I'm not surprised to see Smith omitted. I confess I didn't see the knock he copped early in the game but I thought his ball-handling skills need some work. He wasn't particularly clean with some of his possessions (though he was dudded out of the mark by that umpire, which led to a St Kilda goal, IIRC).

Ladson was very good for Box Hill on Saturday, but do you rush him straight back in after a week in the magoos? I'd let him continue to find form in the VFL. Spots should be earned on the back of demonstrated run of good form, IMO.

I don't like the idea of Roughead rucking the whole game. Bailey should be our first ruckman but it's a bit sus that he's named on the bench instead of in the ruck with Roughead in his customary position in the forward line and Hodge in defence, rather than at CHF.

I guess Clarko and the selection committee are sizing up all options by naming the bench they have. However, I don't really like the prospect of Tom Murphy having to hold down full back for any stretch of time and, inexperienced though he is, Schoenmakers should have first crack at full-back. We just need contingencies to account for Schoenmakers' poorer ball skills relative to Gilham's ball skills.

True, so I suppose it's just now or never with Max. I truly do hope he gets through the game - how has he been going at BH.

You would think that Bailey would be a definite in

Shoe needs to be in for defensive balance

Lewis cannot be dropped after a close to BOG game

The last spot will either go to Bruest or Ladson

Unless Lisle plays forward because of rough then I can't find a spot for him. Young did SFA last week so I will be disapointed if he is selected

Re: Teams: Hawthorn vs Sydney Sunday 22nd May

Trouble for Ellis if he can't make the extended bench in that team

Ellis didn't play for Box Hill last Saturday - he was the emergency held out of the game in case a late change was required for the Saints game. So he hasn't yet had the opportunity to find form in the reserves.

Re: Teams: Hawthorn vs Sydney Sunday 22nd May

Murphy at fullback scares me, oh 2009 :(

IMO, that means that Schoenmakers will be picked. Surely the club has learned from 2009 that Murphy is a competent defender when given the right match-up, but full back is not his gig.

Yeah mate, you're spot on there. Perhaps he was a bit sore too- as you say he has no form line to get dropped from squad. I thought he was stiff last week too, considering he was given 3rd best against Port.

I'm reasonably confident that it is BAILEY, BREUST, LADSON, LEWIS

Smith may actually have a light run with Box Hill, depending on how sore. Not sure they could be overly impressed with his disposal as of yet, but boy can he run :)

Murphy is not and will never be a KPD! I am assuming Gibson will take Goodes when he plays forward and Schoenmakers will take Reid.
I have no idea who will take O'Keefe who has elite endurance and is strong overhead. Maybe Birchall down back and Burgoyne in the midfield.
I think it is a good idea to give Smith a break this week. The SCG and the Swans stoppage game probably doesn't suit him but Puopolo should enjoy the close contact.

Jordan Lewis - Played a quality game last week.
Luke Breust - Surely cannot be dropped after 2.2 and plenty of possessions?
Max Bailey - Roughy will need relief at some point.
Ryan Schoenmakers - See above possibly, or more likely matchup with Goodes or Everitt.
Rick Ladson - with Cyril coming in I don't know whether he is needed, even though he put in a good performance at BH last week.
Jordan Lisle - unlikely.
Clinton Young - not this week.

The conundrum is who would be the sub?
