Saints Delisted

Raph is lucky to survive, but he streets ahead of those delisted. Gamble does not really cut it at top level.

With four years more experience than any of those listed, he's a bit ahead.
If he was streets ahead you'd think he had cemented a spot. But I'm not sure he has if Gwilt comes back strongly.

So has Gamble been given the chop or not?

Still waiting on conformation on anything outside of the above, personally I dunno why such "speculation" and source mongering deserved its own thread in the first place when the other sufficed.

To be fair i was expecting the club to make an announcement about it or at least some of the big name journos to confirm it. Wasnt "source mongering" or trying to big note myself. Was just posting what looked like legit & important information that people might be interested in.

On the bright side at least its brought some good dicussion to the board :D

may still happen, you need to allow time for them to read it on BigFooty then go to press.

We have 1 developing key forward in Stanley. We've lost Lynch and Walsh. About to cut loose Willy J, Paul Cahill. Kosi and Roo are 29 and hobbled through 2011 worse than my Grandma. That is dire.

Would need incredible luck to nab a couple of potentially ready 18yo kps with our top picks, eg Shane Kersten. And as we already know, St Kilda and luck are not familiar.

Fev would be GREAT insurance. But don't sweat though. We won't do it. A fresh start won't be clouded by the uncertainity that follows Fevola.

Would have been good to get Darling last year. Not that Cripps isn't good, but there are less of the Darling ilk around.

Mate had dinner with a group of people, one being Johnson. has been delisted. wasn't to disappointed about it.

2009 Draft

N.Winmar - 2 games
J.Smith - delisted
A.Pattison - delisted
W.Johnson - delisted

Rookies

D.Archer - 1 game
M.Hutchings - delisted (although I hear he's tearing it up somewhere)
J.Allen - delisted
L.Fisher - delisted
T.Walsh - traded

Think we might be going for Paine or Dobosz (spelling)

I'd hope we go for Paine, Tomlinson, Bolger, Elton, Downie or Dobosz.
Its hard to say who will be available, because GWS will want some tall key players and may pick them earlier than normal. Pretty easy to use five or so picks on talls, and simply chuck out the ones that dont work a year later.
If there is a good midfielder available ( Grigg , Nelson ) our first pick might go for that.
I cant see how we can get a player and know that we will be able to use them for depth, without going for a recycler like ... shudder.... Setanta.
( Who logically makes more sense than Fev, ability to ruck etc ).

the draft has been shocking for the saints. and 2008 was no better, how about 2007?

Ben McEvoy , trade for Schnieder/Dempster, Steven.
Not so good was redrafting Gehrig, Eljay Connors, McQualter rookied.

Still , probably as good as any we've had.

2008 and 2006 are the ones I hate. There had to be some sort of freak talent to miss the good players in those drafts ( yes even Armo isn't as good as some of those around him in the draft , Jack Riewoldt anyone? THe set would have been nice ).

Here's hoping 2010 makes up for a bit

Cripps
Crocker
Ledger
Siposs
Gamble
Polo
Curren
Andreoli
Eddy
Ferguson

2 down already though mind you, though I wouldn't really include Eddy who'd been around for awhile.

Wonder how much was Lyon, how much was Elshaug (or was he not back then yet)

Pretty damning really. Only 11 of the 48 remain on our list. 4 of the 9 trades.

:\

We've had the same amount of 'hits' with our RD picks as our MD picks. 5 each. 19 and 18 shots fired respectively. And that's not even including 2009+.

Would be interesting to see how our churn rate compares with other clubs. We only hear about the ones who make it v who we picked.

2005 was a total shocker. Go back a few more years and we really screwed up for almost a decade.

Jarryd Allen was a bitter blow.

When looking at these names, we should also have some perspective as to who cost us good picks and those we got ont he fringes / late picks such as Gamble, Smith etc.

the ones that really hurt are when we swapped high draft picks for spuds.

Dunno about spud (vs injured), but 2005's trade of a first round pick (not on the list above thunda?) for Fergus Watts wasn't an outrageous success - although to be fair there were alot of misses by clubs that year.

Just goes to show how short an AFL career can be for some players.

I would suggest other clubs have similar churn rates. What really matters is use of high draft picks. Picks that are 50+ are not expected to be a raging success all that often.

2005 was horrific.

Ferguson was spotted by Danny Ryan (NSW Scholarship).

Elshaug was appointed after the draft.

John Peake was the recruiting manager at the time.

I'd say Lyon was more involved in the list strategy and trades, rather than specific player decisions (I'm sure he was extensively consulted mind you).

Possibly he could have left other drafts alone too (other than getting his "role players" with later picks).

Whilst we'll probably have confirmation soon, I notice that zebraman has posted on SS that he's spoken to one of the delisted players (who was running laps at Sandy) and "the list" seems accurate. Darch still an unknown.

A poster on TS has confirmed the list is accurate aswell. (know for fact he'd have a pretty decent idea on this particular topic)
