Byrnes defensive work around the ground might have been good, but there was two or three times he was the winger getting back and his spoil attempts had no impact. Positive for him is he was in the right spots, but doesn't look like he can spoil, which is a huge issue playing that role.
He was undersized and filling in for Wood. Is what it is.

Keeler stays for mine. He offers speed and athleticism at his size, which Boyd doesn’t.

The only reason you’d bring Boyd in this week is to take on Nank body to body, and that would indicate we don’t think Marshall can.

Otherwise Byrnes stays IMO because he’s a “Ross type”; he’s the 2025 version of Eddy/McQualter insofar as he’ll give everything he’s got every single contest, and Ross loves those guys.

I reckon Coops and Carroll come in for Stickers and Clark.
I'll be interested to see if Byrnes stays in if we get our best 22 out there. I'm not sure that this version of Ross has quite the same attachment to limited heart and soul role players.

Comparisons with Mini and Eddy are a bit of the mark.
Both of them really struggled to get the ball.
Mini was 5 seasons in before he had his first 20 disposal game ( his only one that year, 2009 ).
Eddy managed twice in the two seasons we played grand finals. But he got less of it as the year wore on.

I've got around 18 players that i'd go in with each week, then there are

Depends on the role to an extent, but plenty of competition around the fringe.

Boxhall, Said, Hastie, Travaglia come on a bit more and who knows?

Wilkie, Howard , Webster
Sinclair, Caminiti, Nas
Wood , Steele, Hill
Henry, Sharman, Owens
Higgins, King, ( 1 of Hall or Butler ).

Marshall, Macrae , Windhager.

I'm totally undecided on the bench.
Garcia, Stocker, Jones, Clark, Byrnes , ( Hall or Butler ), Carroll.

I don't agree with that assessment of Battle. In 2019 he played CHB at 21 and looked a natural fit. Then he got messed around for two years positionally (as well as all the COVID messing going on in the league), so when he was returned to his best position in 2022, it might have taken a little while to find his feet.

I'm sure Caminiti will be fine, but I just like him to kick long at this stage if he can't get an easy short pass away immediately. Battle could be relied upon to hit a distance target to advantage.

Battle also has far more natural instinct as a football player, he's able to get himself out of trouble and still hit good kicks. You can still see Caminiti thinking through every action he makes. I don't know if you can train that into someone, but defensive accountability always makes things easier. If he's gonna make it I think it's as a defender, he definitely has the athletic profile required.

Big fan of Caminiti and I reckon Battle would have struggled to get a kick in his first couple of seasons if he'd been asked to do what Caminiti had to do.

Battle played 1 game in his first season 6 in his second.

Caminiti played 18 games in his first season, 15 in his second - a far bit of the time he was playing as a (sole) key fwd and back up ruck except when he was thrown down back as a fill in as a key defender. (Still managed to average a goal a game!!)

Now he's down back again after the selection belatedly realised he was the best fill in option for Howard. Jeez nobody saw that coming!!

Hammer's first year looked really good, he went at a goal a game. Same as last year. Same as Charlie Curnow in his first 2 seasons. That compares or is better than a lot of the top KPFs of the last 20 years.

Curnow had a good year 3 kicking 1.4 a game and then dropped back to 1 a game. It was until years 6 and 7 that he started a steep rise.

I'm not sure why people are going after him to be honest. Without any consistent structure he's often the last man standing and hasn't been able to star under those conditions.

I thought what stood out about Caminiti last week was running through traffic at pace and emerging with the ball. To me he looked instinctive and attacking. I thought he looked like Liam Jones who plays that similar attacking KPB role. Battle was a super reliable player with an excellent kick but I didn't think Hammer looked a massive downgrade. Also Battle played a looser intercept role. Hammer was also playing as a more accountable type responsible for a tall.

Hammer also has better closing speed than battle as well and alot stronger one v one.

Well considering Caminiti has spent about 3 minutes in defence I’m pretty sure it’s not coming all that naturally right now. It took Battle a little while too.

But the important thing is that Battle gets to dump the kid before the game so his wife can socialize.

I’d be very happy never to hear his name again.
He’s gone. No longer our player.
Time for us all to move on.
