Looking at the OP's stats shows what an outstanding career Mitchell has had, a great player that formed a key part of a great Hawthorn era.

His CV speaks for itself:
  • 4× AFL premiership player (2008, 2013, 2014, 2015)
  • Brownlow Medal (2012)
  • 5× Peter Crimmins Medal (2006, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2016)
  • 3× All-Australian team (2011, 2013, 2015)
  • 2× Lou Richards Medal (2011, 2015)
  • J.J. Liston Trophy (2002)
  • AFL Rising Star (2003)

While Sam himself hasn't announced he won't be playing on, all the signs have been pointing to retirement.

While I didn't get to watch him rise to stardom, win 4 premierships and decimate teams over 15 years, he's been all class for West Coast in 2017. Sam was and is still pure silk, and watching him play this season has been an honour.

Congratulations on a phenomenal career Sam.

This was always planned and Sams coaching ambitions about to be put to the test, in WA, and maybe down the track back home.
The Eagles are cleaning out , got to let youngsters in and veterans who are nearly done , out.

Copying the mighties I guess.

Champion. Very sad that he won't get a farewell game as a hawk. I hope he returns to do a lap of honour at a home game next year.
