It's the blokes first game. Most are talking long term potential.

Not going to be surprised when he has a quiet one.

Just wait... the negativity on this board will be heard. He will only be the new toy for so long, then the inevitable comparisons with Seaby will start. This board is by far the most depressing place to be if you are a legitimate WC supporter

What does everyone think will happen next week if he does end up playing a decent game. It will be interesting to see if they give him another game and play a really tall team or drop him unfairly to make room for nic nat and kenners

He will be dropped unless he gets like 2goals+. Will not keep Naita out of the team and it really depends on if Kennedy gets up or not.

If he plays a blinder someone might have to make way.

yeah its pretty disgusting. once we run out of toys, alot of people then start banging on about trading everyone out and getting new toys in. we are the best out of all the fans when it comes to hyping up our own players. every player we draft is a second coming of Judd.

Just watched the vids, gee he moves well for a man who's 2m tall! Doesn't even look like a ruckman the way he goes about it :thumbsu:

Yep I hate when posters are overly negative, especially when through a combination of lack of opportunity or injury young players aren't given time to develop before they are written off as duds.;)

Please don't bulk Sheppard with that complete dud of a number 3 draft pick Chris Masten.

Masten is in a whole new league. Has shown absolutely nothing (no exaggeration) at AFL level. Had he been a rookie pick he would be on the de-list scrap pile. Spare me the "injury" and "lack of opportunities" and "Priddis" reasoning. Maybe we should put him in on ice for the rest of the year so he can train the house down and fail to touch the ball next season.

The average career span of an AFL player is seven years.

So basically what you're saying is "this place sucks, people criticise young players. But it's OK when I do it because this kid is ACTUALLY crap".

I don't want to hijack this thread but does getting Brownlow votes, even though it's been once off, equate to showing absolutely nothing? Just asking.

This is not true.

He showed some very promising signs pre-injury (2008). Had a few great games in 09, where he showed great potential and his work rate and ball winning ability was on full display.

Since then maybe due to injury, maybe due to loss of confidence or maybe due to being played out of position he hasn't been able to pull it back together since.

Whatever the reason he has shown more than "absolutely nothing".

Given the propensity of umpires to completely stuff the Brownlow voting at times I am usually reluctant to use Brownlow votes as a guide to a players worth.

But you make a good point nonetheless

Are we talking about the game v Port Adelaide? He was not the most influential player on the ground that day. I barely noticed him.

His rising star nomination was purely a stat based nomination - we've all heard the ridiculous way that nominations are handed out this week. This "myth" of a game where he dominated is just not correct. In any case, clearly it's an aberration.

Lycett should be given his five years though clearly.

Not the one I was thinking, IIRC (and I'm getting old so could be hazy :p) it was against NM on the gold coast.

I must be the only person alive who still holds hope for Masten.

Maybe he's starting a bit slow for a #3 pick but he'll end up an AFL play if he wants it, which it seems he does.

Nah, not the only one alive, but there may only be a very small number! :)

I have hope for him too.

His problem is he isn't versatile enough though.

Competing with guys like Priddis, Kerr. Scooter, Gaff, Swift, Koby and a few more.
The only role he can play is midfield, whereas other guys competing for sports seem more capable of playing more multiple positions.

I'm sure his time will come, has showed the potential in the past when given significant time in the middle.

I dispute your last comment. Was there any game where he actually showed more than dinky little handballs? I watched all the games in 2009 as well yet I don't remember seeing anything that resembled talent.

Gaff, Darling, Sheppard and Swift have all come in and shown great signs. I never saw any from Masten.

I would trade Masten tommorow but I do agree that he has had some good games in the past. His best game still doesnt compare to what Shuey, Gaff, Sheppard, Darling etc.. have pumped out though.

At his best he was a level below those guys.

The frustrating thing about Masten is waiting to see whether he'll make it or not. I'd just like an answer one way or another. But the Jedi counsels patience... :(
