The report says the sticking point is years.
That is about dollars though. The club will give him a renewal if he's still up to it, but he wants guaranteed dollars for year 2. The club wouldn't want to give them to him, because he's at an age when he could be spent after 2022.

Not judging either way. Personally I think he should be one of the highest paid players in the team, due to both his ability alnd everything else he offers. But hte industry doesn't seem to work that way with older players.

Just a ridiculous proposition to suggest that just because he's the captain and a few supporters think he's earned enough over his career that he turn up next year for minimum chips. It's his job, not your fantasy footy team.

I have no issue with him asking for money. I just hope we trade him than bend over like we have for:
Grundy
Beams
Stephenson
Phillips

Should I go on?

Interesting but in a bad way.

Why can't he back himself to play well for another couple of years? Make it impossible for the club to not offer him another year at the end of '22.

He should accept and align himself with the club's new principles. Change starts from the top down.

The club owes him nothing, as captain he owes the club. That should be his attitude.

He's probably thinking, "Why won't the club back me to play well for another couple of years?"

They've backed him from when he was drafted at the age of 17. A leader recognises that at some point you have to give something back. A confident bloke would also back themselves in.

I think he should take a one year deal at reduced pay, because that's the rules of the industry he's working in.

They're pretty shit rules though. Over the next two years, I'd expect Pendles to contribute more to the club - on and off filed, than blokes we'd clamber over to sign with bigger multi year deals.

You pay on potential though… which is why North were throwing $1m per year at De Goey last time around.

But it’s good to know at least we are not paying him $750k in 2022. Looks like a saving of a minimum $250k on top of Cox’s $550k. Already beginning to look healthier

If they recognise that Pendles could be spent after one year, I wonder if they also recognise that Steele will be washed in 0 years.

Yes that's the industry and the kind of thing I was referring to. I personally think they've got wages mixed up with draft and trade value.

I hope we are working hard to do a deal on Sidebottom with GC. They want some experience and maybe we can snag a 2nd round pick and player for him. If it happens, it would be sad to see him go. But more room in the cap, points for Daicos, and maybe a kid with potential arrives.

If we were offered a 2nd alone, and took on his entire salary, I would pull the trigger for sure.

Bit disappointed in Pendles if it became too much of sticking point with a 1 v 2 year deal. Not withstanding I have no actual knowledge what he’s earned or ever been underpaid for the sake of the club but for a senior player, and captain, may be less about him and more about Collingwood at this stage.

With the lack of experience in the team, you would expect Pendles to be offered another contract in 12 months as long as his form doesn’t fall off a cliff and he becomes a liability. I doubt that would happen. However, he is limited in terms of his position. Hasn’t shown anything off half back or as a forward.

Lucky you aren’t running our list.
We’d have to fire sale players and trade out first round picks with such a reckless approach to old/past it players….

I wouldn't have a problem giving Pendles 2 years. What's the point of keeping him on our list next year if we don't intend for him to provide the leadership to see us through the rebuild until we hopefully start contending for finals again in 2023?

As long as the monetary figure per year is lower. Better to smooth out our salary cap.

Maybe Pendles is just p!ssed off that the club wasted the best years of his career for the sake of a botched experiment.
Yeah, the club really did Pendles dirty by playing in 9 out of 13 finals series including 4 grand finals, since the experiment was conceived. Bastards.

It’s the silly season. Between now and when the AFL TPP boss locks the door to the trade lodgement room, anything can happen, especially to players out of contract.

The historical examples are endless.

Sure, odds are he’ll stay because most generally do. But when a seed has been planted (as has happened now) they very often don’t.

(1) Nobody twisted his words. The words that came out of his mouth needed no mayonnaise whatsoever.

(2) The journo was Jay Clarke, who Pendles has a strong association with. Jay was feeding him softballs and pumping him up. Pendlebury happily played along. Hardly a ‘gotcha’ environment.

I think you've misinterpreted my post.

From what I heard (I didn't listen to the full mmm interview) it was basically and I'll paraphrase what everyone seems to take from the snippets > after < that mmm interview.

'I'd like to coach at a different club' and other bits were 'I wanna remain a one club player' - there was nothing mentioned about >after his playing career<

That seems to be the important bit of missed information. I never mentioned anything about meejah twisting words

Now whether not that is a 'seed' or 'code' for 'get me outta here', that depends on what is going on in his mind, no one is a mind reader. Everyone else (us) is speculating.

I for one doubt that Pendles is looking to jump off a sinking ship right this minute, although no one could blame him, and I also believe he is a man of his word, so going by his clarification that tells me he's staying til his playing days are over.

So now it's a wait n see when his playing days end.

If it happens to be this year for his reasons of aspiration or any other reasons (or combined) then that'll put a severe dent in a start from scratch rebuild - for obvious reasons. Unfortunately and understandably that'll result in a lot of angst among us the fan base. Some are teetering on the edge here and something like this could push em out.

Yep that is what I got out it too. However even if he was implying that, think he has given us pretty good service and think that he would have paid as much at another club or maybe even more, who knows.

I really don't get the angst against him he is not the biggest problem of why we are where we are.

Me thinks the angst is just another sh*tfight the club will have to endure before there is hope again, and no it shouldn't be directed at Pendles.

However if this is a way of shopping himself and at the same time saying to us fans 'hey I'm still here til I finish playin' and then he finishes up playin this year and it was his choice I'd be pretty miffed with that.

That would severely hamper our rebuild not having him there guiding the green shoots and would take more hope away.

After the way Pendles has been commenting on Twitter lately I believe that he should not be captain next season. Not that it should be taken off him for voicing his opinions but I just think it’s time and this would be a good excuse to give it to Moore

Think its been known for a while that he will be handing it over at the end of this season, as he wanted to play under the next captain.

He's probably thinking, "Why won't the club back me to play well for another couple of years?"
Nope. He has been around long enough to understand why he would be offered a one year contract at the age of 33. If he plays well enough to have Collingwood wanting him the following year he has nothing to fear. If his form is so average or poor that Collingwood decide not to offer him another contract he can go to another club with our blessings.
