Analysis Season 2020 - What should the season look like now?

I find it interesting that players currently not on the list could be considered.

The local club I involved in has 6 players on VFL lists & have recruited 4 direct from the NEAFL. The flow on effect to VFL & local clubs could be a disaster depending on levels required. Obviously all over the shop at the moment.

There has been numerous practice matches cancelled down here over this weekend. Beyond any delays in the real season, normal preparation plans for the season are in disarray.

What will be will be.

All elite football has now been suspended in the UK until at least 3 April.

Seriously pie in the sky stuff that the AFL will start next Thursday.
I think until there is a confirmfed case of an AFL player having it they will try and play as many games as possible.

You are drawing an equivalence between "flu" cases last year and a hypothetical serious infection rate for Covid19

So we had 300K flu cases (your figure) last year and yet we managed.

The available stats for Covid19 suggest that it is the mainly the very elderly and /or infirm that are at risk

The 3 (only) deaths so far in this country were 80+ years of age.

Mild infections and Recoveries outweigh serious infections and Deaths by 13 to 1 on a global scale.

I'm not suggesting that Coronavirus isn't a very worrisome phenomena but I have every confidence that this nation is as well, if not better equipped to repel this scourge.

By all means take every precaution, wash your hands, avoid crowds and but for Chrissakes lets keep a bit of balance here.

Stressing out about worst case hypotheticals isn't good for anyone
I'm very much with you on Corona Luthor and I am a fellow elderly gentleman like yourself.:oldman::cool:

Also does the extrapolation of infected into mortality rates take into account people that have been infected that are not sick hence don't get tested. If so the death % would be lower than the statistics reveal.

It’s just shit though that the one season in over 10 years that we’re all really anticipating a good Lions team, a compromised season and potentially one where we can’t attend occurs.

Shame it wasn’t the start to any other season in recent memory.:'(

Geez this is a good point. I hadn't thought about it like that. :(

Now I'm pissed.

Missing Leppas last season would have been good although then we would have probably kept him and missed out on Fagan.

Maybe 2010 so Fev would have never played for us.

Good thing our list is so young and full of talent. Our period of dominance is just starting. Tiges are in the middle of theirs and this will hurt them the most with their aging list profile. Then there is WC and Pies who have some promising youngsters but depend a lot on their older heads. Then there is Cats who were avoid a rebuild and trying to bleed a premiership out of their old midfield. They will fall dramatically next year like Sydney. They would be hating this.

Season should be put on ice until the world returns to some form of normality. The NRL look like idiots playing a round in front of crowds because as a country we are waiting a further 2 days to take extra precautions for no good reason.
It is inevitable a player/umpire/staff will test positive for COVID-19 forcing the league to shut down anyway (NBA/EPL/etc) so why even start and make the situation more complicated than it already is.

$$$

My guess is that the league isn’t as financially sound as it makes itself out to be.

The NBA can shut down its season and survive purely on their tv rights deal for one the remaining 1/3rd of their season.

The AFL can’t.

Hey Dylan12 here are a couple of observations on playing games without crowds.

1. This will really disadvantage Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond, Geelong, West Coast (home) and Adelaide (home) because with no supporters present, umpires will not pay unwarranted ‘crowd free kicks.’ It will advantage Brisbane particularly when playing in Melbourne.

2. There will be fewer ridiculous player celebrations after goals.

3. Channel Seven’s will revert to using the prerecorded crowd noise track that they used on World of Sport during ‘Club Corner’ when showing highlights from a game that was not one of the ‘matches of the day.’

4. Indigenous players will be able to play without being racially abused, particularly when playing Collingwood.

5. Catering companies will face bankruptcy because they will not be able to price gouge supporters.

6. Digital Football Records from 2020 will be produced by the AFL and sold by online subscription at shamelessly inflated prices.

7. The AFL will move games to suburban and country grounds where supporters can park their cars around the oval and hit their horns when their team scores.

devils advocate - fit people under 60 are mostly ok with the virus. Fagan at 57(?) is the oldest coach and probably one if the oldest people in Afl circles (not counting journalists). It’s a young persons game.

IF the players are their immediate families are willing to self isolate/practice social distancing and planes chartered, I don’t see why some games in empty stadiums can’t be played. And maybe have only 3-4 games then a two week break.

some teams will contract the disease and games would need to be cancelled and the fixture/ladder need tweaking, but many games should still go ahead.

Older ancillary staff can sit the season out.

Or is it the crowd that are idiots for going? There was an old coughing couple in front of me at the Carlton praccy match...made my mind up then and there that this will be my last match til/if this thing blows over.

Remarkable that people still have their heads in the sand over this. There is a rapid unfolding situation in this country that will overtake whatever the AFL or TV networks want to do to salvage some games. It's still too early to speculate on what any outcomes will be except to say it's all but impossible to imagine no one at a club contracting the virus and as such compromise the whole team.

Likwewise the notion that players can self isolate ,fly all over the country and maintain a life whilst trying to play AFL with the interactions that that entails is fanciful.

It's just life. A lot of people want this virus to be what they want it to be . They're in for a surprise. Public and personal health factors will supercede footy which is unfortunate for us because we all want to see footy and we had a great shot at it this year.

Lol the season going on post was totally fanciful - that was the point.

My previous post are all about closing down everything. The devil’s advocate post re games continuing was just a bit of fun. The charter planes was a suggestion out if the AFL a week or so ago.

On the Gold Coast on a holiday. Flew in last Wednesday. That evening there were 100 cases nationally. Three days later there are over 300 (clearly the real number is many times greater than that). A lot of water to go under the bridge between now & next Thursday.

Currently having lunch with Tom Hanks. Flying back to Melbs on Tuesday.

Yeah once players r positive n team mates isolated it cant go on...unless a vaccine magically appears

If all is as bad as we are told, this is exactly what will happen.

Once players start getting the virus, the season is over. Has to be.......and like it or not we have to accept that.

The AFL is delusional if it thinks Empty Stadium games will see it through until this thing blows over.

If not a player, a member of the support staff/ other club personnel will inevitably get Covid and then it's all over.

Face reality, postpone it now for a nominated period and revisit the issue after that.

Is there really much harm in getting a few games in first?
