Thank the Gods I avoided that punchcard shit... first class to get edumacated on the original IBM PC. All the upperclassmen had horror stories about dropping their piles of punchcards before being able to read them, and having to manually collate them.

In high school, we were still using remote terminals on a shared PDP-11. The terminals had paper tape readers, but we didn't have to use them for projects.

We were meant to use those but the deal fell through and we were given time on Winstone's mainframe instead. We'd spend the class writing an Algol program to do something trivial, punch the cards with a paperclip, and they'd be sent off to be run overnight during slack time. We'd get the printouts the following week, although sometimes there were gaps when they were busy and didn't run our stuff.

Our maths teacher, Mr Singh, had a habit of ending every second sentence with "isn't it?" "So a squared plus b equals theta c, isn't it?"

One week the task was to generate a list of 99 numbers that followed the pattern 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144 etc.
Our printouts came in a big box instead of the usual manila folder. Mr Singh started handing out the standard 2 pages to everyone then came to mine. His eyes grew wide and he kept flipping through more and more pages... eventually ripping off a huge wad of lineflow and thumping it on my desk.

I don't know whether he was more annoyed at me running it to 9999 instead of 99, or that the very last page was

Precisely what I have for breakfast from the works canteen almost every morning. Except with a slice of cheese on top that's gone oily and transparent where it sticks out, and the unwrapped bit of bun is dried and hard from being in the bain marie. Thumbs up.
