Should the AFL Abolish the Coin Toss before the Centre Bounce ?

So when you said the coin toss is not necessary, you didn't understand what it was for. You thought it was about how the game was started. Do you even watch Aussie Rules?

No, I did. I just compared it to basketball as they also have a contest to start the game. I compared it to basketball because I think that's how it should be. Contest to start match, not a kickoff, so why is a coin toss needed? Just decide the ends before the game. Each team has an end to kick to during the warm up so why not just stick with that end?

Because a toss of a coin is a fair and visible way to decide the choice of ends. It doesn't actually take any time. The two captains take a minute from the warm up and it's a chance to formally shake hands before the game.

Lets just get rid of football. No more changes, no more suggestions. shut it down and move on.

OK, I know it's a tradition and the anticipation of the result is good theatre but it's unpredictable and whilst most of the time conditions are such that it doesn't matter which team wins the toss very occasionally there is an aberration in the weather and one end is favoured by the breeze....as a result the outcome of a match may depend on which team wins the toss.

It's outrageous in these days of elite professional sport that AFL teams have to cope the implications of a completely random event such as the result of a coin toss. Surely the AFL must do something to create an absolutely level playing field so the result is not simply determined by a chance outcome.

Admittedly no one can control the outcome of the toss of the coin so it falls to one of the captains to make a guess. Wow, a guess ! A guess then can become a highly influential factor in the result of a game! Amazing, a completely random event which nobody can control can influence the game so significantly.

This is even worse than the bounce !!....at least we can fix the bounce.
I agree. Both teams should kick with the wind.

Wtf are you on about? What is your alternative to having some random event determining who kicks which way.

Do people get boners from starting threads? Serious question.

I just don't get how paper beats rock.

Nothing should beat rock.

The fear of uncertainty, teleologically the fear of death, really has a lot to answer for.

Lets just save time and get rid of everything different from the US sports.

NFL still has the coin toss and it can have a real impact on the game.

Prior to the first bounce, a ping pong table should be set up in the centre. The captains take place in a rally to determine who decides which direction they kick to. Captains are selected purely on their table tennis ability.
