Should the AFL Abolish the Coin Toss before the Centre Bounce ?

The atmosphere is greater when the team that kicks a goal is kicking to the end here their fans are. And the greatest intensity in a game is in the first and last (unless the game is over) quarters,

So my nomination for the most innovative suggestion of the year is:
- the teams kick to the end that is reserved for their cheer squad in the first and last quarters
- and to the other end in the second and third quarters.

Simples!

I don't agree with abolishing the coin toss and I have not seen any responses but it you had to use an alternative method, then home team decides which end to kick to first. In the grand final it would be the higher ranked team from the minor round.

And what the bloody hell are we supposed to replace the coin toss with?
We could have some sort of supercomputer wheeled out before each game to blaring trumpets and dancing girls. Gill flicks the switch from his throne and we all hush as the computer sums up all the probabilities and whatnots. After a few minutes fireworks erupt and the giant screen flashes which team kicks to which end in the first quarter. We could also do it at quarter time, half time and three quarter time. This would make our game unique and non-american.

This has me wondering for awhile now. why is it the teams on the field never change sides after the toss ?

They do in the NFL a lot. thought the Real toss was done back in the rooms before any team took the field for practice and all.
So no one understands my question ?

First player to get clean possession kicks the ball in the direction he wants his team going. From that point on its set amd all the other players then need to adjust...

Just imagine it. Would be ******* hilarious bedlam.

But still slightly less confusing than some of our existing rules.

Don't listen to anything that RedFury bloke says ;-)

thanks for reading this Yankees post .. again

I do some parent umpiring for the Under 10's and after continually forgetting to have a coin on me I put my hands behind my back and get the opposition captain to pick which hand I am holding the whistle in.

That may not be for everyone as I know parent umpires of some specific unnamed teams who would absolutely do the old switcheroo to make sure their team won 'the toss'.

Could it be because there aren't really 'sides' at the opening bounce? Both teams cover the whole field, both teams forwards or backs go to the other end depending the direction chosen by the toss winner.
Before the toss both teams are on the field, splitting it. getting ready kicking etc

They have not changed sides after the toss. that I've seen. or clear the field before the toss.

On the other had in the NFL. Both teams clear the field, then send out the Captains. they stand backs to the side of the field they were just recently practicing on. after the toss if necessary they change positions if needed.

I watched the AFL for decades and never notice this till a couple of years ago. as the coverage has gotten so much better over the years.

Thanks for the reply

OK, I know it's a tradition and the anticipation of the result is good theatre but it's unpredictable and whilst most of the time conditions are such that it doesn't matter which team wins the toss very occasionally there is an aberration in the weather and one end is favoured by the breeze....as a result the outcome of a match may depend on which team wins the toss.

It's outrageous in these days of elite professional sport that AFL teams have to cope the implications of a completely random event such as the result of a coin toss. Surely the AFL must do something to create an absolutely level playing field so the result is not simply determined by a chance outcome.

Admittedly no one can control the outcome of the toss of the coin so it falls to one of the captains to make a guess. Wow, a guess ! A guess then can become a highly influential factor in the result of a game! Amazing, a completely random event which nobody can control can influence the game so significantly.

This is even worse than the bounce !!....at least we can fix the bounce.
Make all fields complete circles and have the field rotate in a circle?
It's creating a new axis to the playing field

I call it, 4D AFL

I think we should abolish the ball.
Funny shaped balls bounce in funny ways.

To better reflect equalization the ball should be round, or as you rightly say, be abolished completely.

How about a game of knuckles or slaps?

Maybe spin a cricket bat and got flats and humps or spin a tennis racquet and have flat and smooth.

If no of the above are suitable, how do we decide who kicks which way?

We shouldn't even have goals. This completely eliminates the need for a coin toss and there is not wind advantage whatsoever. It also has the added bonus of no scoring, which means no one can win BUT most importantly, no one can lose and have their feelings hurt. I say it's a win on all counts.
