Doh - how could I have forgotten Grella??!!

Yeh - I was picturing Suker, but the name just wouldn't come to me. The other name that I had in mind was Stoichkov (spelling?)

I also had Simunic's face in my head, but the name wouldn't come to me - he's the one who tackled Dukes in the penalty area.

Ok - now to my questions, and yes, I imagined you were on the youngish side and might struggle with these, and I've pushed the rules a little by focusing on one WC - but, well - there you have it!

1. What number did Paolo Rossi where in the 1982 world cup.
easy- 20
correct

2. Who provided the cross for Rossi's second goal against Poland in the semi final in 1982.
tardelli?
Not a bad guess, it was Bruno Conti, an excellent wide playmaker in his day, and one of the stand outs for Italy in that world cup.

3. What number did that little bloke wear (who provided the cross).
7?
Conti wore no. 16 (I know this as I had a shirt with that number in my younger days)

4. Who missed a penalty in the 1982 final between W Germany and Italy.
ahhh, cant think of his name. that italian guy, wasnt he the 1st to miss in wc final or something?
It was Cabrini, I think he was a full back, it was a woeful pen

5. Which two teams were knocked out of the 1982 finals, neither having lost a game.
france and brazil?
No, France actually lost to England in the first round, and Brazil lost to Italy in the 2nd round.
It was Cameroon (both they and Italy ended the first round with three draws); and England (they went out of the 2nd round in a 3 way play off with Germany and Spain, without losing one game)

6. Who scored the winning goal in the Brazil v USSR game in 1982.
no idea ?
Eder - a very famous goal - I'lll put up the clip as soon as I finish here

7. Through whose legs did the ball roll before it was hit home.
zico?
I think so - we'll check when I put up the clip!

8. Who was the Cameroon goalkeeper in 1982.
absolutly no idea
His name was N'kono - an outstanding keeper (check Cameroon's results above)

9. Who captained Italy in 1982?
dino zoff?
correct, at the ripe old age of 40

10. Which German player missed a penalty in the semi final shoot out against France in 1982?
gerd muller?
His name was Stielike - at the time known as the hard man of German football, he certainly was a fearsome competitor and had that German quality (of the time) of giving no quarter and being able to mark players as tight as a drum

Here's the Eder goal:

by the way, the ball may have rolled through Falcao's legs!

also - I'm now not really sure whether this was the first or second goal Brazil scored (they came back from 1-0 down to defeat the USSR 2-1)

oh well - that's what happens when you rely solely on memory!

very impressed by your trivia efforts BS end

My soccer knowledge is as good as anyone's - I have always been a keen student of the game and I was actually a pretty good player in my day.

But the world cup bid issue is a different kettle of fish.

The way it is currently structured, it will do enormous financial harm to the AFL, and what's more, that will happen with a massive injection of taxpayer money.

It's this combination of factors that I cannot abide.

Government and taxpayer funds should never, ever be used to the detriment of an existing, long-standing local operation.

That's a basic socio-economic and political tenet that all Australian Governments (at all levels) should always follow.

Nice thought but the fact is that Polititians will do whatever it takes to get re-elected. That they may do long term damage to push through short-term self serving policies doesn't bother them one little bit. As for the WC bid, it remains important to get into the polititians faces & make them answer the sort of questions raised on this forum. Like, what cost? who pays? who doesn't pay? what effects it has on other codes? who uses & pays for any facilities afterwards? etc etc
This is why both sides of politics are so disgraceful.

It's the same self-interest that may actually inhibit the bid itself, with at least three state governments (maybe four), not wanting to spend on red cent on it.

By the end of Feb we will understand whether Rudd is willing to push the WC at any price (by paying for absolutely everything and letting the states off scot free).

You're obviously lying.

You oppose the WC, so you *must* be an AFL-loving, culturally blinkered, idiot bogan called Kev.
