I suspect those that have to struggle a bit learn about the game and what is required more so than those who can rely on pure ability.Yep, its downright uncanny how often one particular sort of player ends up a successful coach
Sheedy 180cm/hard nosed defendee
Malthouse 180cm/hard nosed defender
Worsfold 180cm/hard nosed defender
Chris Scott/Brad Scott 183cm hard nosed defender.
Clarkson 177cm/hard nosed half forward/utility
Lyon 183cm/hard nosed half forward
Being a hard man, not hugely athletically gifted but with a reputation for toughness smarts and professionalism seems to be the standard pathway to AFL coaching success.
Its interesting to consider why that is- i guess as a starting point toughness and a fearless approach to playing football = respect and attention from players and a willingness to be ruthless as a coach. Defenders tend to see the game better because they have to to play their role well. And if you've built a successful playing career based on hard work and getting the most out of yourself you're more likely to be able to impart similar good habits into players.
Or maybe everyone over 190cm just has less oxygen available to their brain.
