So much for the soccer hype and it's "massive" threat to AFL

I watched Perth Glory on TV last weekend. Absolutely aweful standard of football. I thought it was bad before the A league but it is worse now.

And as for the morons who keep singing 'you fat bas...., you fat bas.., shi..., hahaha', well that's enough to keep me from ever going to a game

by the end of the world cup who can blame australians...what a farce..diving and refereeing...boring.. instead of making people realise how good soccer is it made people realise how bad it is... we were only into it coz australia was fluking

how does the grassroots participation stack up?

Soccer is popular at grassroots because it is easy to play, especially if you are a girl.

The problem is there is no exposure for Soccer so any grassroots level interest is lost when everyone is focused on AFL and NRL on TV.

Sheedy was spot on when asked about soccer: "Soccer? Get a life!" I agree. Soccer is a boring game to watch and no follower of Aussie Rules Football would watch soccer instead of footy.

World Cup soccer is a big 30 day yawn! Aussie Rules followers will never embrace that game.

Standard excuses - weather, AFL, NRL clashes, dogs birthday party

The league won't survive with sub-5000 crowds, the ongoing $$$$ losses will kill all but 2-3 clubs

Frank Lowry will continue to prop the weak clubs/competition up. He wouldn't want to see his 'baby' fail.

Seriously though, NZ are a massive problem that's the 2000 one, and that dosn't have much to do with the Australian game/development and Central Coast have been terribly unlucky with their games getting monsoonal rain.

They got 15,000 or so for a preseason match and if this game was in reasonable weather they would have gone close to selling it out.

Can you imagine sitting there when it's 2 degrees and not just raining but absolutely BUCKETING down?

well i play soccer cause im too small to play afl. gees, why are there people who are scared of other codes? we can support our local teams in every code you know.

Exactly. I'm an AFL man through and through, I play it and go to every swans game and will watch most games every week. Dosn't mean I can't support a succesfull A-League and follow SydneyFC. Especially considering they are in basicly alternating seasons.

it is a great stadium anyway, one of the best rectangle grounds in Australia.

most people have similar views, there are however some who believe it is criminal to support more than one code

Woohoo someone with common sense. The leagues are played at different times of the year, anyway, the Roar are getting crowds of 20000 or more up in Brisbane.

The problem is that if you like soccer then you watch European games, and in comparison the A League is a lot worse than a social footy game in the park.

So how you can change from prefessionalism to less than mediocrity defeats me

That's such crap. The A-League is a decent standard, obviously not great but it's a good base for it's second season.

So if you like a sport then you should only watch the best standard and not your local comp? Every country in the world has a league but no one should ever follow them because theres better quality elsewhere?

That seems to be the way to go for most people, all my mates that are into soccer follow leagues from Europe and not the A-League.
