Who on their list would be worth a top 5 pick or a top 10 pick???

Lloyd? No.
Lucas? Great player but is 30 yo and only has a few years left. No
Fletcher? Retiring soon.
Hille? No.
Stanton? Possibly top 10. Debatable.
Monfries?. Been disappointing. No

Really struggling with this one because obviously Knights won't want to give away a Paddy Ryder or Gumbleton because they are the future.

So who's left?

Agree. Good player. Untouchable you'd think.

It's ok for a club to say we're gonna trade heavily but to get high picks you need to give up good players. Especially with the draft basically being unavailable for 16 clubs for 2010/11.

Spot on. Essendon just don't have the cattle to obtain high picks, so they could trade mid-tier players for mid tier draft picks.

I agree, but you could write that post about so many clubs this year and next. Only a certified superstar with at least 6 years left is going to get you a top 5 pick, maybe even top 10.

I would bet that unless Kerr is determined to leave West Coast and Brown leaves Brisbane, the chance of a top 10 pick being traded by anyone will be very slim.

I think it's more realistic that they'll trade say Monfries + 3rd round for a second round.

Or Stanton and a second round for a late first.

They aren't going to get high draft picks for most of their players; but if they package them well, they could end up with a raft of second/third round picks.

No offence, cause he's been a very good player, but at his age, I don't think any club would give up a top 10 pick in the draft for McVeigh ..

Paddy Ryder would be the only one IMHO (and even then the Bombers wouldn't trade him, so that counts him out) ...

And with GC and WS coming in, they are screwed bigtime.

McVeigh is worth a top 10 pick.

Not these days. He isn't an elite midfielder, and he is already 27.

Unless the club is at 11-12 o'clock of their premiership clock, then they wouldn't trade a top10 pick for McVeigh.

Eg. Collingwood would probably trade for a McVeigh with a first rounder but what use would he be to a Richmond, Carlton or a Melbourne?

Trade mid-tier players for mid-tier pics, then ontrade multiple mid-tier pics for higher ones.Could possibly trade players such as lucas or lloyd plus a middle draft pic for a high one

Travis Johnstone got pick 14.

I rate McVeigh better then Johnstone.

I agree McVeigh would be worthless to several clubs rebuilding but they'll have top 5 picks anyway.

The teams that could use McVeigh (in the premiership window) will get picks 10 to 16.

I didn't think McVeigh was that old. I though closer to 25.

North Melbourne have ensured that the days of clubs getting away with trading older players for high draft picks is over (Freo aside who just don't seem to understand)

Prior to the Hay trade Lucas at age 30 would have got a top 10 pick in a trade now a club would not even consider it.

The reality is there is little serious trading by anyone in any year. It is difficult at the best of times. When a Judd walks of a Carey implodes you get early picks on the table. Hawks bit the bullet and played it smart with Thompson and North played it dumb with Hay. Freo have thrown around some craziness but surely even they now will hold onto early picks.

When the new clubs come in they will be the ones selling early picks if they are allowed to. I'm not sure how the normal priority picks will work in with the new club priority picks and I don't know whether clubs will be compensated for losing players with Lloyd/Wirpunda type player access.

Essendon might be able to work a deal for players and picks to upgrade their second and/or third round pick(s). I'd have some interest in Monfries and Stanton. They won’t trade Ryder. Laycock may have some appeal for some clubs but he is a second rate ruckman and there are a bundle of those around. I’d give up Bryan and a 3rd rounder for him and still want to get a better ruckman to Collingwood.

In the end I doubt Essendon will do any more than a few fringe trades.

Travis Johnstone got pick 14.

I rate McVeigh better then Johnstone.
He really got traded for Wood. Brisbane could more readily on trade 14 because they also had an earlier first round pick. They would have looked at it as losing their 4th ruckman for a midfielder with elite disposal who needs a rev up. I think that is relevant.

Hille would attract a top 10 pick from plenty of teams.

As an example.
Geelong - With Ottens future in doubt and Geelong in the midst of a dominant period, Hille would be pretty handy, of course, Geelong won't have a top 10 pick.

The problem for the Bombers is that they lack quality players in that 24-28 age bracket. With the younger players, if they are good there's no point trading them and if they aren't no one else will want them. They also have a number of players on their last legs and they aren't going to attract much interest either.
