I suspect we will be much better next round and the extremes of this week will be quickly forgotten.
However there’s something just not right about the combination of our footy department.
All the top end talent but we are really just a tease / we ain’t winning anything unless there’s major change in culture - and I’m not sure we can expect that to come from within the current coaching and playing resources.

If by culture you mean buy in, I agree

Before we think about sacking Vossy, can we sack Austin? He who gave us Nick Haynes, and makes absolutely stupid decisions like handing a three year contract to Matthew Cottrell.

Hopefully Haynes needed a run to blow the cob webs out he looked shot

Hopefully he did, because that was a very poor showing. I fear this is who we will get all year. :(

I don't know but I'd be really surprised if Austin takes many actions without the coach being consulted. Not saying he doesn't or hasn't overruled him but I reckon he'd be in the loop.

Remember when we signed Cunningham for like 4 years?

The Williams contract.

Cottrell 3 years way too much and just unnecessary.

We just do weird shit.

Think it was on 360 this week - coaches talking about how they are involved in decisions about trades/free agents - but less so when it comes to the draft.

I think the club needs a team of sports psychologists to work on the coaches and the entire list. Both groups panic and become almost submissive when under pressure.
This has been our #1 problem for last 20 years. As soon as pressure comes on we shit the bed. Not sure who our sports psychologists are but they’ve got a hell of a lot of work in front of them

Sacking another coach might give us a sugar hit similar to Teague, could even achieve more consistency in-game or throughout the season

But, the range of wins won't change much due to the deficiencies in characteristics on our list, footskills and speed/agility, mongrel

All the coaches mentioned in this thread as likely replacements, had players with those characteristics

Even if it was Kingsley, GWS have an abundance of those characteristics in players on their list
There's enough talent on this list to be top 4. Beyond that is not forecastable. Top 4 is though. Yes we will get a sugar hit. Yes it may not work. But also yes this list can be top 4 with a better system.

Only Premiership teams have Curnow McKay TDK weird Cripps comparables.

The difference then ...?

Successful teams have game plans that promote what the non stars are good at isntead of grinding their peripheral contributes into dust and praying for a star to dominate they promote the peripherals strengths and what areas they have depth in.

Good teams also promote fundamentals. It's literally on the white boards in the facilities at the swans and Geelong.... Coach driven focus point. Wonder why they've been so successful for so long..... Melbourne storm's Bellamy does the same. There are other differing philosophy across successful clubs but this and having a method to fit the list instead of forcing the list to fit the method are the 2 most consistent cores of successful clubs and what keeps them successful when their lists aren't historically good.

TDK still treats the way he lines up vs big body ruckman the same as last season where it didn't work once....

Kemp and McKay's goal kicking routines....

Walsh panic dump kicks...

Saad running past on the wrong side and cornering himself and kicking poorly left footer on the right wing where he can only kick to one spot....

Motlops attitude....

Persistent correctable - poor - behaviours by players

All it takes is the coach to dedicate 2 minutes talking to a line coach to make it a focus. The top end here is good enough such that the fundamentals being executed well would nearly make the game plan irrelevant. Carlton would win regardless - but that requires the fundamentals and the exuberance and confidence levels - which we don't have. Which is the coaches direct responsibility

I’d change the cattle before the coach.

They’ve had a hard ass approach, softly-softly approach, unthinkable amount of heart-to-hearts.

Nothing works. They ain’t built for it. Move em on.
How about a balanced approach? Bot? Run a good system and players won't buy in? **** them off sure... Why not a modern approach first though....

Some of these players... They've had a disaster in Teague which no list would've performed under and a stubborn fool Who's apparently a hard ass but talks about wrapping arms around players and softly softly shit more than he's actually hard, word is there's not much in regards to highlighting player errors and things. So whatever hes actually hard about... it clearly isn't anything important.

I wish for a coach who is adaptive. Isn't stuck in one methodology. Isn't stuck as only one personality type. Isn't one track minded. Isn't trying to force a game plan from 1999 onto a list it wouldn't suit even if it was still 1999...

How about we just forget game plans and tell the players what position they are to play and focus on fundamentals.

Get Walsh to lower his eyes and trust his team mates - last year he was literally ranked with Kennedy in the bottom 5 in the whole ****ing league for bad kicks going inside 50. Back to hack kicks and blind bombs v Richmond again...

McKay and kemp have both demonstrated - McKay for longer - that they can kick and kick well. They've so both shown they can kick like shit. Coaches are supposed to reduce those extremes by building a framework for players to operate within. Where the **** is that? Why is kemp allowed gk, from 30m out directly in front, run 5m out right and hook kick back left???

Why is Saad allowed to run short side and callfor the ball ? Why isn't he instructed to only run open side especially as he's extremely one footed. Instead of hand ball receives short side....

Get Harry to either muscle up or play more on the move. He can't wrestle. Be a lead up or roamer then no point repeatedly trying to wrestle and losing to first year kids...

What about some fundamentals for TDK? You're up against a bigger thumper of a ruck? Stop trying to body him. Put your knees into him give awayb2 free Kicks early jumping all over him with your knees out. Make him scared of blocking the leap. Actually defend your opponent when we don't have the ball.... What about gov? Fundamentals. Why is acres turning blind straight into trouble isntead of turning defensive side or playing the way he's facing? Why is he always trying a blind turn and disposal? These are player habits that are changeable... But aren't being changed... These aren't skill limitations they aren't physical limitations... And they're all consistently well known weaknesses that aren't reduced, smoothed or even removed completely at all

The whole thing stinks of not encouraging players to do what they're good at. Telling them what the should be doing and ignoring what they are doing and of course... Not correcting the controllables.
Walsh was a guaranteed future captain. The ultimate workhorse team man all the way through juniors and his first few years with us.

We’ve turned him into a selfish individual player. Amazing effort by us.
I don't think so. I think we've turned him into a confused player. He goes long and hack kicks. There's a lot of perceived pressure in the way he plays.

Cuningham never got a 4 year contract.

Cottrell gets a bit more security for a low money contract.

Williams obviously hasn’t worked out for us. But it was hardly ‘weird’.

Not impressed but I still think this is more to do with the list than the coach.

For what he's got the game plan is fairly effective normally.

If we had a list like Freo playing bland down the line footy id be horrified. With our list it's probably the best chance we have 😂 #1 for efficiency inside 50 last year.

Cuningham got a 3 year extension in 2019 after 20-odd games averaging 12 touches. That was weird.

which other clubs sign a player like Cottrell for 3 years?

6 years @ big money for a half back flanker with a hope to turn him into a midfielder was weird.

I am not sold on Voss, but I am not in the sack mindset yet. I would ask Adam Simpson to come in as a senior assistant. Make it clear if things don’t improve then there will be mass changes to the coaching staff. I would be sacking Brad Lloyd today and probably Nick Austin and the whole list management team. If bringing in Simpson doesn’t help you blow up the list at year’s end. TDK goes free agency. Harry to the Lions for two late firsts. Do what you need to get Williams, McGovern, Saad off the books. Try and get some mid level consistent free agents and hit the draft with the hope to have a real crack in 2027

I'm very much of the mindset of not keeping a coach just because you don't want to sack another one. The assessment comes to expectations vs results. With a list of Brownlow, Coleman and All Australian talents and some very serviceable A/B graders, Top 4 is not a stretch at all.

Voss has had ample time to implement a cohesive and effective gameplan and mitigate our obvious vulnerability to turnovers, poor skills, and mental fragility. Ultimately the coach must be accountable.

Renovating the coaching panel.

Should have been done at least after 2022.
Gross negligence

Austin/Lloyd are the great survivors of the Teague era. Both should have gone, in at least one of Cooks 4 "reviews" since...

What do they actually do when they review us?

Our performances fluctuate from top4 to bottom 4, quarter to quarter let alone game to game.

Its been going on his whole coaching tenure.
The complacency is just negligence
