If we want to do something that is more than buying flowers, then depending on what the club does, maybe we can do something directly with Sorrento footy club for their juniors.

It can either be a Port board thing or a big footy thing. Maybe buying some equipment, or help with setting up an annual award for the best clubman type junior awarded in his name.

2013 - Round 1 - Friday Night - AAMI Stadium
Port Adelaide v Collingwood
John McCarthy Medal for BOG.

I actually think a Saturday Night might be a better idea - as it will give more Collingwood supporters a chance to make the journey across and pay their respects (and hopefully swell the crowd numbers a bit).

Good thinking. Does anyone like the chances of making this happen?

Something very similar happened to a past player and coach at my local ameture football club. I wasn't furtunate enough to have met him but each year on the anniversary of his death we have a round named in his honour, all the players wear black arm bands. Post match a family member talks about the man, what happened, the signs of depression and the importance of drinking responsibly and looking after your mates. Durring this round each year drinks aren't served at the football club and no one goes out that night.

Do we know if there will be any kind of public memorial or funeral kinda thing at the club?

Also, I'm in.

It's going to be a few days before anything will be announced. The Coroner in LV will have the body for a few days maybe a week before they do an autopsy, and all funeral arrangements will be driven by that, and I suspect any memorial will be timed around the funeral.

We have the Port board account that we use for player sponsors. We'll work out what to do and then release details of the account

That's a really thoughtful suggestion, I understand it
I think something like that may happen more privately, which is possibly more appropriate (??)
For the general fans and public, the game and medal is a fair suggestion
There are other players who have played longer between the 2 clubs, so maybe not best player on ground, maybe what is more reflective of him, which would be- Most honest player, best endeavor, best spirit ?
Perhaps to the best player 22years and under?
He was so much younger than I thought, and still had upside!
Personally, I would resonate with more of an endeavour, achiever medal, rather than BOG.
Either way, I am sure the AFL and club are onto this already
