Yeah, a lot of it is derivative. That's not my main gripe though. I have the same problem with a lot of modern progressive rock too: a lot of it is just over-produced to the extent that it just ends up sounding cheesy, pretentious, and not believable at all.

Hence why I tend to enjoy black metal and sludge metal more.

I had a fair few billy contenders, but it just made me cringe a bit.

'I'm so much better than your significant other!!!1111' are a bit cringe at the best of the time. That compounded with it being in a metal track hurt me.
