The Windies need to send an SOS to Larry Gomes to teach these guys how to stick around in test cricket.

Larry knew how to occupy the crease.

That’s not really what it is they’re lacking. Braithwaite is one of the best grafters in world cricket and among current openers would have one of the best averages of balls faced per innings.
Chanderpaul can also do it albeit it’s only been shown over a small sample size.
De Silva has built his career to date on being a dour Watling type.

It’s simply being able to know when to push the button and when to just be able to leave the ball, drop the bat on the odd single and calm things down for 4 overs and stop these ridiculous collapses.

Frankly I thought SA would bat only once yet WI did great job in 1st innings batting and 2nd innings bowling . 2nd innings batting was a disappointment

I want WI to start winning tests/ODis more regularly .. big fan of WI since i was a kid..

Ian Bishop is another comfortable commentator earning easy money, when he is he going to start teaching the young Windies quicks how to bowl.

What does that even mean?
Being a great fast bowler doesn’t make you a great coach.
Hence Otis Gibson has actually been a sought after coach for much of his career despite being a mediocre seamer

What is Bishop going to teach 34 year olds Roach and Gabriel that they haven’t already heard and adopted or ignored? Holder is 29 and knows his game as a bowler inside out. Even Joseph who has taken a while to start showing signs of improvement has looked 200 per cent better over the last 6 months.

Of all the things we can be criticised for, a guy who has made commentary his profession for over 2 decades not putting his hand up to coach is probably among the more far fetched

Its a shame Chanderpaul couldn't stick around with Blackwood. I have big hopes for him for the Windies, really impressed me in Australia and can set up an innings with Brathwaite. I'm such a fan of Blackwood, just wish he could convert more and make big hundreds, he's surely good enough. Geez Holder's batting has dropped of the last few years!

What ever happened to Seales (injured i guess)? I really don't rate Gabriel.

Just love to imagine them playing to there full potential. Openers batting the way they did in Aus, Blackwood comes in and makes a big hundred around the rest of the middle order with Holder making a decent score. I think there bowling is generally pretty good.

Gabriel’s career will be a strange tail when he retires because it’s been bookended by mediocrity.

When we were REALLY poor like Zimbabwe poor bowling wise and Roach had had his car accident etc, they kept picking Gabriel because he was young, and had genuine pace. It was a sarcastic hashtag among WI fan pages for a long time: #MorePace mocking the fact that he was selected and didn’t do anything.

Then in the UAE of all places he ran through Pakistan and it began a period of about 5 years where he took 100+ wickets at 28 or something and he won us a few test matches - he took 11 or 12 in the match in a home test against Pakistan to win the game as well. He’s probably had his day now. Seales will be back.

I understand Braithwaite’s captaincy: he’s in charge of a side that only knows one way to win, to rely on bursts with the ball and hope their batting is ‘enough’ so he has to, in his mind at least, mix attack with caution when it comes to his decision making. But it means we regularly miss those moments I mentioned earlier

I would really love to see us win the toss and bat at the Wanderers, have he and Chanderpaul just play their way: steady and look to punish bad balls, not to go outside what works for them. Then if the scoreboard allows, try and be positive.
Holder actually looked in great touch last night. Best he has looked for ages, got a very good ball from Rabada.better batting sides than ours would have struggled with him last night

I think Ian Bishop is one of the best cricket commentators going around.

Loved watching him bowl, had a superb action IMHO.

May have ended up as one of the Windies greats if injury didnt effectively end his career.

He was a beautiful bowler and very skilful. Very knowledgeable too and as you say, a great commentator.

Really hope the Windies can learn some lessons - they weren’t THAT far off

Is Kyle Verreynne injured? I thought he held up pretty well in a poor SA team in Australia. Produced a number of counter-attacking innings as the aussies tried to get on top.

No. Dropped. New coach just said he prefers Klassen as a bat but when he fields his elbow flairs up so has said he must keep and that is that. Bad luck Kyle.

He’s 9-7 as captain and averages 45.

South Africa announced their XI overnight and there's 4 changes and they're going to play 2 specialist spinners in Maharaj and Harmer.

Nortje injured, Muthusamy and Petersen dropped and Jansen rested for their next Test which is in 9 months time.

1 Elgar, 2 Markram, 3 de Zorzi, 4 Bavuma, 5 Rickleton, 6 Klassen, 7 Mulder, 8 Harmer, 9 Maharaj, 10 Rabada, 11 Coetzee

Seems like a lot of chopping and changing lately to see what sticks.

lol @ rested for 9 months time.

jansen has effectively been dropped and a spinner has been preferred.

They've effectively picked Coetzee over him too which I found bizarre.

Edit: Seems to be a fair bit of speculation that Jansen actually has a finger injury from being hit by Joseph while batting in the first Test.

He got whacked pretty hard and from memory also got a knock on it fielding in his follow through

Again I’m baffled by what logic they’ve used with some of these selections though
