I didn't see this coming.

I was actually shocked by the size of the defeat in the first test to be honest.

NZ have literally never beaten SA.

It’s one of the all time hoodoos of the major world sports albeit rarely fought out over length series which helps. Though in saying that you’d have though NZ would have snagged a 1-0 weather affected series somewhere or something by now.

So my thoughts pre series were that SA would pull yet another unknown fast bowler from their seemingly endless supply who bowls north of 140, or a Vernon philander type who has been plying his trade for 7-8 years and gets a green top to bowl on. Paterson actually reminds me a LOT of Philander.
I digress.

The Kiwis have stagnated since their WTC win so I thought this was a series where, given all the ‘this is a disgrace’ commentary, it was prime for an ambush especially on the back of what happened at Brisbane to a team stronger than NZ and with more match practice.

They came out in the first test and instead they did exactly what a good team should do and they walloped them so I guess I thought I’d got it wrong and they’d do it again.

SA have other plans at the moment it seems and one thing about them even though it might not always appear so in their batting at times over the last 18-24 months, guys in that protea shirt have pride and they won’t want to let this chance slip.

Bedingham looks a class above the rest of this SA batting line up and would definitely be picked in their first choice line up.

Australia losing their last test against the West Indies isn't a good sign for them either.
Not sure there is a Shamir Joseph in that NZ side but is a good point.

Trying to figure out which upset would be the bigger one, this SA game versus NZ 2nd test or the West Indies knocking off Australia at the GABBA?

I feel this might even be a 3rd string SA side, given all the majority of the players in SA20. Or maybe South African cricket is strong at the moment?

West Indies’ attack had two relatively seasoned bowlers and a veteran opening batsman and a reasonably experienced keeper.

SA doesn’t really have any of that, but they DO have a virtual squad of very seasoned domestic players and their opposition probably isn’t as strong

It’s a close call
