There’s all for having an objective conversation with diverse and opposing views, then there’s just having a pile on facilitating mis-truths.

Bassat came out and said when Lyon was appointed they expected to go back to go forward. We’ve cut more than most lists in that period of time.

Most people can deduce it’s been a rebuild on the fly due to horrendous list management and a poorly performing footy department for the best part of 13 years.

I’m not necessarily in the corner of churning through coaches and footy departments either, but there was substantial criticism around Ratten developing standards across a day to day footy program that was going to give this club the best chance of success across a 5+ year window and heavy reset.

They clearly didn’t want to invest long term in Ratten and the question’s why.
Don’t bother explaining it. People have no interest in understanding and just peddle the same tired shit for the last three years. 🥱

They should be focussing on getting more young talent instead of splashing cash at free agents

They are 2-3 years away from that
Why would it be a one or the other scenario?

Can you point me to the statement about a going backwards to go forward?

A quick google shows me that the initial announcement to Saints members from Bassat upon Lyon’s return was of “ambitious goals” for 2023.

“Importantly, securing our new Senior Coach has completed the major changes that we need going forward into season 2023.

As we embark on our 150th year, we will not shy away from our ambitious goals for this club both on and off the field.

The last few weeks have been incredibly difficult. As hard as it has been, the Board’s commitment is to drive sustainable success for our deserving and loyal supporters. We are confident that we have made the right decisions in pursuit of this goal. ”

If they are rebuilding they should be honest with the saints supporters. but I doubt will say it.
Do they really need to come out and state it though? The fact we let Tim membrey go when we could absolutely use him at the moment seb Ross Brad crouch a lot off good average players gone, I don’t think we are in a full ground up rebuild like north have went through but definitely a rebuild of sorts will continue to hit the next couple drafts and will obviously throw some monster offers out to players around the comp , I would actually rather see us bottom out a bit over next couple seasons better now than when Tasmania enters

I’m sure if they had a fit list top 8 would very much be on the cards. The team they put out Saturday was decimated.

I don't think it does.

Brisbane
Geelong
Hawthorn
GWS

Adelaide
Carlton
Collingwood
Fremantle
GCS
Sydney
Western Bulldogs

First group should be finals locks.
The 2nd group all capable of finals and better than St.K.

Most saints supporters had some optimism about what we could achieve in 25 in about December. The young core looks good and the kids are developing nicely. If we had a good crack this year and managed finals (maybe win one) then wed be throwing it at an FA to try and push on deeper into finals from 26 onwards.

As it stands by March our list was rooted with injuries (including long term ones to our most important structural players in Howard and King) and now looks like this year will be a waste.

That being the case, 26 and beyond is totally unknown. IMO we pushed all our chips in on 25 being successful and it looks like its not going to be.

We might be cooked if were trying to full rebuild with compromised drafts etc.

It's not. But what did North achieve from it all? Sweet FA. Good strategy for Collingwood and Richmond, not so much for North and the Saints.
I don’t see what it hurts personally to throw some offers out north didn’t land any but it wouldn’t have done them any harm if they did land a Degoey or even a Parker 3 years ago would have taken some pressure of young stars, worse case they have probably made a couple clubs pay a bit more than they would have liked.

North haven't been able to land any big fish via free agency but you guys have an absolutely stacked list with high draft picks now. The cash can just be used to keep your core together. You'll be fine.

Are you a Saints fan? Edit: forget I asked, your posting history tells me you are.

You ignored the question and the time period that it was asking about to put up St Kilda as a finals aspirant. Odd.

Do you think you’ll tilt for a flag before Sinclair and Steele begin to decline, I think both are 30 this year? If not, who replaces them and do you think that pushes back your tilt?

The Saints are clearly trying to address the gaps in their list for the medium term, unfortunately so far to no effect. I just can’t see how this build competes without both hitting the draft for 2-3 more years and bringing in established players to fill the gaps.

Otherwise I’m not as optimistic.

Not sure what part of my post was optmistic to be fair.

I think the "plan" was to absolutely be competitive this year (noting that 3rd-14th is pretty wide open and we have a softish draw). Without the injuries weve had we should have been somewhere around 5th-10th and if we made finals and won one then we go hard for an FA and maybe try to land a trade to adress need (midfielder and key back) then we should be in that proper contending group from 26 onward with Steele, Sincs, Hill, Wood, Macrae and co still contributing.

As it stands were missing... 5? maybe 6? first choice starters including our spine bookends and we look like being maybe 2-8 by round 10. Season gone, plan ruined.

Without the injuries if we finish 6th this year, have more development into Philipou, Nas, Wilson, Garcia and co plus King, Wilkie and that mid band (Higgins etc) plus some of the vets, were an appealing list for an FA.

What we do if were shit this year who knows, go full North/Richmond i guess?

I think the ceiling of the saints fully fit list against the fully fit lists of other clubs is about 10th.
