I like Arsenal's approach to subs - they redefined the sub role as 'impactors' in the internal language they use. Makes sense in terms of what the sub can achieve - being used to change the game

Bailey Banfield to be the super sub

Like Square Peg I am mentally preparing myself for Banfield to be joining Hughes on Sunday, I'm not sure I'm going to last long sticking to my resolution of cutting out the negatives towards Freo players on here.

I'm getting great mileage out of this puppy!

In all seriousness though, Banners is a great guy, so I could never be mad at him. Also, he's just playing that lame "tackle as many people as you can within the forward fifty" role that coaches think is so goddamn important. If you want to be angry at someone, be angry at the list management team for believing forwards were not a necessary thing for years on end! That's how we end up with players being shoe-horned into positions! Haha

Good assessment. I like to order the ins and out to match approx where they play:
out: Logue, acres, amiss, Lobb, Walters, Mundy, NOD
in: Fyfe, Hughes, tabs, Jackson, Treacy?, O’meara, henry

im not sure we are any better on paper. If nod and Walters were then I think we are, but the real improvement is just young guys getting a bit older.

Imo in the positions you’ve compared I think it looks a bit like this:
Fyfe > Logue
Hughes < Acres
Tabs > Amiss (right now)
Jackson > Lobb
Henry < NOD
O’Meara < Mundy
Walters and Treacy not like for like so can’t compare (as you’ve suggested)

Edit: Hughes would never shit his pants like Acres just did, so maybe Hughes > Acres 🙌🏽😆

I wouldnt be mad at Banners, and we would have the forwards, he’d be picked ahead of Treacy and Sturt. I’d just be a little frustrated the match committee are so safe in their thinking.

Ahh yes, I see your point there. I thought you were saying you'd speak poorly about him if he was picked though, so isn't that kind of being mad at him? :D

I was somewhat disturbed to read an interview with Lyon this afternoon where he said something along the lines of:

"Watching from the media I thought not enough teams were taking advantage of the stand rule to move the ball quickly.
I've been out of the game so I left it to my assistants to develop a fast, attacking gameplan. I'm just there to add the 10% on top, the young assistants are doing the gameplan.
We have a lot of elite runners in our team (Saints) so we're going to back them to outrun opposition and we'll worry a few teams this year."

I now have pre-PTSD at the idea of the Saints doing a Collingwood on us and just playing blitzkrieg while we go back into our shells and move the ball slowly and bomb it on the forwards heads.

What should happen if I'm thinking logically is our team should be much better organised, more talented and cohesive and methodically take them apart over 4 quarters but if we're 5 goals down at quarter time from fast turnovers I may have an embolism.

Disclaimer - I write sometimes to externalise my fears around how invested in this stupid sport I am. Don't take everything I say seriously.

Crazy question fellow Freo enthusiasts.

If we just want a mature body to fill gaps up and down the wing, isn't Bailey Banfield an actual midfielder?

Follow up question. Would that not allow us to play an extra forward?

I will withhold my melt for now.....

also, you continued to write in italics after the quote, which is kinda weird :tongueoutv1:

Love this bit, so essentially if they suck it’s the assistant’s fault as they developed the game plan, but if they win it’s his 10% on top that did the trick?

I've been out of the game so I left it to my assistants to develop a fast, attacking gameplan. I'm just there to add the 10% on top, the young assistants are doing the gameplan.

No wonder he seems so relaxed, reminds me of 2016 when he took a back seat during preseason and left David Hale in charge.

You can see the 10% on top. It was just enough to shift him to the next belt hole lol.

Not sure if you're joking but my browser displays all text on BF as italics. It doesn't make any difference to how it looks when I turn it off and on.
just gentle ribbing Shed mate; I've never seen you post italics in this manner (after you shared the Ross quote it just continued when you started posting your own thoughts..). This is the first time I've seen it like this.

Also, on the Ross quote - he'd know he'd have to evolve and that part of that is allowing his coaching staff to implement more modern-ideas. After tonight, I'm expecting a hard, physical game - so anything that gets us the 4 points will suffice. Hopefully we can kick a higher score though!

Might have been a while, and Ross is no mug, but we're still good enough to win here, and I still feel we will.

Hughes was kicking flat bullets inside fifty to the leading forward at training, let's see what he's got to offer in this new role.

Personally I just want him to work hard and become the brick wall of some opposition nightmares when there is a contest

Ah, cheers. Interesting when I look at it in the BigFooty app I can see the formatting but it doesn’t show up in Safari on Mac. It’s just all italics.
