Preview St Kilda Saints vs. Fremantle Dockers, Round 1 2023

Reckon Lyon will still coach from the point of view of blunting what he sees as our strength first, so having some intel from previously coaching here might be a small plus - but the list turnover in the past 3 seasons would be that only about half of the side that runs out in Rd 1 would have been previously coached by him.

Only fear I have for this game is that St Kilda frustrate our ball movement going forward and we bang away for 3 quarters without putting enough score on the board to get a significant lead and then be too buggered in the final quarter to hold on or turn it around.

Regardless of putting in one of the best seasons in terms of away wins last season by any interstate team in 2023, games on the road are still hard to win and having to wait till the last game on Sunday in the first round to play could be another negative.

some good points. Sadly, you make me nervous now...hahaha.

I absolutely think Ross will try and stifle us, negate our fast ball use and plug up the corridor, vanguard the defense....I'm not overly familiar with Kilda's list so I'm not sure who their half-back flankers and rebounders are, but maybe they'll look to counter-attack off turn over, because I think we'll get plenty of looks, it's if we can't lock it in with our pressure that J-Lo preaches so much that we might get hurt going the other way - but we are strong defensively these days. Still, we'll need to be on, little margin for error. It'll be the first time our new-look forward line goes at it, which could be another factor. And the away thing is a good point too, it's why I'm pissed we have a 4th straight away fixture opening, but I guess we have to just go over there and find a way to get it done, occasionally we lose at home too.....we need to be able to win at the MCG if we're to play a Grannie for instance. We won there last year, reigning Prems at the time too - just that slightly boring little encounter in Round 11 last season ;)

St kilda have 7 or 8 out. Mostly impacted their forward line.

I am expecting a fairly easy win

It will be a tough game methinks. The Saints players will be very keen to impress the new boss. Any win will do for me.

From the starting squad on Thursday I am expecting:

Ins : Ryan, Walters, Freddy, Jackson
Outs : Johnson, Sturt, Wilson, Walker

Dropping both Wilson and Walker for Ryan is a death sentence.

Freo media is pumping Treacy's tyres, I doubt he'll be left out of the round 1 team

Could read that all in the first sentence of that article too. If Treacy doesn't play Rd 1 it won't be because he doesn't deserve it. ie: he should, but he might not.

As they describe Fyfe as "the hybrid", I suppose that means that Fyfe is at the level of fitness where can the bring forward pressure much like Schultz, Switkowski can...well, maybe more like Walters, Sturt or Banfield could.

Jackson will bring that forward pressure so I can see how they can go Taberner, Treacy, Jackson and Fyfe...but the doubt I have is can you go Taberner, Treacy, Darcy and Fyfe when Jackson is rucking, so does Darcy have to rotate off the bench which will be less rotation for mids?

Another factor is that you could select the sub to cover being too tall by having a fresh player who can come on and give you run, but that's a gamble that no-one else gets injured during the game.

And then there's Jackson that can come out of the forward 50m and also play some time on-ball, maybe even alongside Darcy, or even spend a little time on the wing.

I don’t think NOD will play round one at this point. Thought Henry and Hughes showed enough to lock themselves in the wing for round one + lack of pre season and match fitness will impact a guy who’s only played about 10 games.

Freddy and sonny will come straight back in if their healthy imo.
Starting wings will be aish and hughes.

I've already read somewhere that Darcy will probably be more ruck bench than ruck forward for that exact reason of being too big as a collective. Would depend who else is on the ground, if course he will still spend some time forward.

Agree with most here; if we're serious then we put the Saints away, especially with the injury list they have. Ross will try to blunt our attack, so in that respect it will be a great opportunity for the team to work on those incisive passes that unlock a defense. I suspect eventually the Saints get done by sheer weight of numbers though - look for us to lock it in and have multiple repeat entries as well as for our midfield to overrun them as their first choice mids tire. I'll be disappointed to not crack the ton and win this comfortably.

Last year they smashed us around the stoppages in the first half and once we got on top we ended up kicking away.

If we can slow down there ball movement and make them kick to a contest we have the height to dominate that area especially with no King or Ryder.

Cox to have a field day and Fyfe to kick a bag

IN: Ryan, Jackson, Freddy?

OUT: Walker, Banfield, ?

This is what I was feeling prior to stax's comments, which got me indecisive (all stax's fault!!), but I remember the Adelaide game last year, we looked quick with handballs and movement through the mids and in the first half we seemingly looked in complete control. Then Adelaide re-surged and dominated the 3rd and all of a sudden the tables turned and we were on the back foot and staring down defeat. Then we fought back in the fourth and got in front and then the crazy finish for a point with Chapman's Hand of Freo Gods!! It was a mental finish, but I do recall being very nervous throughout that 2nd half, we never looked comfortable....however, somehow we got that job done.

Then we played like dog turd against the Saints at home. My point is this: it's never just that predictable, what you feel like the outcome should be. Each game has its complexities, its ebbs and flows...you could be dominating and then the tables are quickly turned. Look at us vs the Bulldogs in last year's finals series. I'd have felt pretty ****-a-hoot as a Bullies fan that night up to quarter time. Same when we played Melbourne in Round 11.

I remember Round 1 2019 against North where we obliterated them and then lost so disappointingly against the Suns a week later, it can be such a weird thing sport, throwing up surprises galore.

I agree, if we're serious - we get it done. Weight of numbers. A bit of class. But, if we are off in any way - Fyfe's mental demons if he gets an opportunity for a set-shot early etc...I can't be the only one nervous about this hahaha, I also know how abject this place can get in a heartbeat. Round 1 is always a tough one to truly predict because there's no prior form other than pre-season and scratchies, whose results are meaningless. I also understand those saying the Saints have loads of injuries etc, they are depleted. We have a few too....I still think we put out enough quality, but I guess I'm still nervous about it. I still expect a win - but I do that anyway, without any logic, I expect us to win because I want us to win....

Ryan Pearce Chapman
Clark Cox Young
Henry Brayshaw Aish
Switkowski Taberner Sturt
Treacy Fyfe Schultz
Darcy Serong O’Meara

Wilson Hughes Brodie Jackson

Would like to see Frederick as the sub if he’s fit to play. No rush though imo. Ryan is probably a top 10 player at the club so he plays - otherwise I think it’s probably best to go with those that are most ready.

Round Two onwards we can slowly bring back the likes of NOD and Walters that haven’t quite made the round one side.

Key word: "try". He can try all he wants but Saints don't have the cattle to run with us for 4 quarters. Even if they jump us and get out on top, we'll run over them by the end. I'm not nervous at all.

And OUR boys are out to prove they're top 4 material. They most definitely have a chip on their shoulders. I've heard it in multiple interviews, most recently from Youngy. They are hungry. They will "stop at nothing". lol

I sense some nervousness here, but relax peeps. It's gonna be a fun ride this year and we're going to have more successes than failures. Bookmark it. :)

My first time in Melbourne will be for this game!

I have $1000 on us at 1.80. The Melbourne footy trip will either be much cheaper then it should have been or be a real sad trip home lol.

Absoloutly pumped. I love Ross though, really wish he wasn't their coach.

The first time we played them last year king hammered us and won them the game. The second time we played then the only thing that kept them in the game was Ryder dominating the center bounces. Both of those players aren't playing.

Hayes is injured. Membrey being rushed back. Their talls are cooked, Cox and Pearce will have a field day. The classy Billings is out as well as Zak Jones. See Ross and Windhager unlikely.

We should give them a touch up, but I'll take a 1 point win. Pumped.
well... some people know my betting.

I am going to throw $50 or $100 on the saints to win so I win either way.

I dont mind losing $50 or $100 if Freo win.

Saying that, I hope you get the $1800

I'm very nervous about this game. Realistically we should go in favourites and win, but you just cant ever rule out a Ross Lyon coached team, especially when he's up against his old club. He will likely fire his players up to bring maximum effort and turn the game into a scrum.

I feel if we miss this win it could dent our confidence and make the start to the year a tough one, which considering our draw in the later half of the year wont be good at all.

Should win this one, despite the intel from the oppo coach and his ability to turn this into Lyon-ball to slow down scoring. I just think we have too much talent across the team.

Quite a few of our losses last year came from the opposition bringing greater intensity from the get-go and we weren’t able to catch up with them. We’ve been training for faster starts in preseason but it will still be a problem for us if we can’t match their physicality from the first bounce
