Personally, I would’ve gone an infiltration route
Pretend you’re members of the first order And take them down From the inside

After all, you can’t fight an intergalactic war with 20 people and a freighter

Look, I find it impossible that anyone could write or create a SW villain, more evil or bad ass than Palpatine, so I am glad JJ Abrams brought him back to the finals (even if it was self-indulgent fan wank)

If there was a couple more movies to flesh the saga out, than creatively, yes Abrams could have created a different/more unique villain, but this is the final/closing of the Original/Skywalker trilogy, it isn't feasible to create a new big bad pulling the strings in one movie, based on what we knew/know.

JJ Abrams (imho) did the best he could have, given the cards he was dealt going into ROTJ. Also rewatching the Last Jedi now, it doesn't ret-con it as much as I thought.

You mean like.. Snoke?

Or Kylo?

The creatively interesting villains WERE created in the previous two movies.

You can, I mean the emperor branched into literally like a parasitic entity and the force is such where memories, ability and entire personas are in holocrons and possession is a thing. Not to mention the longevity of such things such as Sheev being quite long in the canon despite being a human prototype. What he is, and what he was, is a sleeper sith in that he was the puppetmaster pulling the strings and rarely if at all the front line to be surmounted, which is what this movie made him.

You had in the first five mins an explanation for Snokes literal existence, you set him up in TFA as an entity born of darkness and you then completely disregard him. But; What if Snoke actually surpassed his manufacture? Would that not have been a better scenario? You could still do what you did, but having say the heroes fail, literally as they did and instead of Ben crawling from the hole to victory, you had Snoke with just one line to Palp before offing him from behind with a short sabre. After all, several tubes, who knows how many Snokes were actually in existence.

They were there, you could have done things with them, but you didn't, because you fetch quested and force pandered the audience instead.

the dots do not connect

snoke was billed as someone thousands of years old, who watched from afar the empire and saw how they went wrong, and who was billed as more poweful than vader and sidious.

the novels as well as the movies

indeed, snoke bitch slapped rey around like a doll, something sidious could not do in ep9

It's why it was so disappointing that he was killed in the last film could have had an epic fight with Rey/Ben vs Snoke

There were Snokes in the vats at the start of IX.

As someone who liked TLJ, I agree. Luke's comment coming out of the fire was a direct dig and I think there was one other big one.
“A Jedi’s weapon should be treated with more respect.”

If the extended cut doesn't feature Luke turning directly to the camera and winking I'll be ****ing ropeable.

Retconning Rose Tico's existence seemed like a **** you to Rian as well.

A pretty awful one, feel pretty bad for the actress who was just trying to do her job.

Snoke was dead. Not Abrams fault. Kylo shown in two movies to be equal or weaker than rey.

#TeamPalpatine

Snoke was also a clone sitting in vats in Palpatine's lair. It's lazy to say JJ had no outs but to use Palpatine.

Rey also didn't want to kill Kylo, giving him an edge in combat if he wanted to kill her. Kylo also had a year consolidating his power and learning secrets Snoke kept from him.

Johnson tried to do something different after force awakens was just a new hope remake. Everything that was 'wrong' with last Jedi was because it did something different to the original trilogy, and everything wrong with rise of Skywalker was because they tried to undo it and pander to fanboys who just wanted an original trilogy remake.

..

Completely and utterly false.

Not really. Everything that people reacted negatively to was the things he did different to what had come before. The things people shrug their shoulders at - the throne room, etc. - was the imitations.
